  • Peaceful dog-friendly site with views over rural Pembrokeshire
  • A 25-minute drive to Llys-y-fran Reservoir; half hour to Preseli Hills
  • On the town bus route; shops, butchers and pub three miles away
Potter on down to this peaceful escape surrounded by the Pembrokeshire countryside… at the dog-friendly Llain Terfyn, you'll be cosying up in a level-grounded rural landscape with grassy pitches to lounge about on and the edge of the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park under a mile away. Here, hilly hikes, hillforts and prehistoric sites are not far away – and that includes the Preseli Hills 35 minutes’ drive away. For those of you who like a bit of water action, Llys-y-fran Reservoir (25 minutes’ drive) might wind you in, as watersports, fishing and hiking are all chipper here. Don’t worry too much if you’re worn out afterwards, as there are few ways to unwind on site, whether with your dog at your feet, or in front of a barbecue or a firepit. For those prime cuts of meat, there’s a butchers in the local village three miles away (the site is also on a bus route that will take you there). The village has shops, a pub and a garage too, plus extras like a chemist, church, small film hub, post office and a leisure centre with an indoor swimming pool. And how to get about to your next port of call? Well, the nearest train station is in Clunderwen, 15 minutes’ drive away. Ferries go from Fishguard over to Ireland and there’s a small aerodrome at West Wales Airport 25 minutes’ drive away too.

Local attractions

So, will it be watersports, waterfalls or mountain climbs up first? Llys-y-fran Reservoir (25 minutes’ drive) will be your go-to for the first, while Cenarth Falls (20 minutes) will fulfil any craving for some scenic waterfalls and pools. There’s certainly a kick you’ll get from mountain climbs in the Preseli Hills (35 minutes) or yachting in Fishguard (35 minutes), but those of you who are proper thrillseekers will want to flock to Oakwood Theme Park (half an hour) for its rollercoasters and other family-friendly rides. The closest hillfort is at Foel Drygarn Hill Fort (15 minutes), where there are three Bronze Age burial sites. And if you’re after more old sites, there are two Neolithic sites only a short drive away, including Pentre Ifan Burial Chamber (20 minutes) and Gwal y Filiast (10 minutes). After something that's properly feelgood? Well, Pembrokeshire Llamas (15 minutes) will take you trekking, but not on your own. Llamas will be your companion here, something that the little ones especially might like.

Liked: Loved the rurality. Knew it was remote. The farmer was friendly and approachable. Camaraderie with fellow campers

Disliked: One toilet with mobile light so difficult to see at night. Cold water shower. Hot water not working whilst we were there. People arriving at gone 2am and shining their headlights waking us up.
