  • Vintage motorhome on a farm in the Preseli Mountains of Pembrokeshire
  • Castell Henllys Iron Age Village 10 minutes’ drive; Newport 15 minutes
  • Dogs welcome; wetroom and kitchen; launderette with tumble dryer
Do you like your holidays with a vintage twist? For the enchantment of yesteryear, consider booking the retro motorhome at Mehefin Coed, a 15-minute drive from the coastal town of Newport, in Pembrokeshire. Parked on a peaceful working farm in the Preseli Mountains of south-west Wales, the cosy, dog-friendly caravan comes with all (or, at least, most of) the things you need for your Welsh break. Large, comfortable bed? Check. Wetroom for long, relaxing showers after epic hikes in the surrounding hills? Check. (By the way, towels are supplied, alongside a selection of toiletries.) TV and DVD player for rainy days? Also check. Cook yourself a meal in the galley kitchen, which is equipped with twin hob, toaster, kettle and microwave, and devour it alfresco, among the colourful flowers of owners June and Laurence’s garden. There’s also a firepit for your barbecue needs – again, kindling, logs, lighters and assorted tools are provided. The nearest shop is in the village of Crymych (10 minutes’ drive). By the way… note that when you stock up on provisions, there’ll be no need to purchase any bottled water: the site’s own delicious-tasting spring water comes directly from the Preseli Mountains, and it is filtered, sterilised and free of any additives. Speaking of the Preselis, when you’re ready to go exploring, June will be happy to share her knowledge of the area and to hand you useful maps to guide you. On-site facilities include a charging point for electric vehicles and a launderette with tumble dryer.

From the manager: Thank you both for staying with us. Sorry about the bed, we have a new mattress on its way. Just wish it was that easy to make the weather better as well. Hope to see you all later in the year. Our kindest regards. June & I (Laurence)

Local attractions

Cairns, burial chambers and hill forts – the Preseli Hills are dotted with ancient structures. To learn more about the area’s prehistoric past, head to Castell Henllys Iron Age Village (10 minutes’ drive), a reconstructed collection of roundhouses. Costumed staff talk you through ancient crafts, from survival techniques to foraging. After checking out the medieval castle in Cardigan (20 minutes), on the banks of Afon Teifi, take a detour to the Teifi Marshes Nature Reserve, where you might spot kingfishers, mallards and peregrine falcons, plus (if you’re lucky) the occasional otter. The on-site Welsh Wildlife Centre has displays on the local wildlife and a programme of guided walks. St Davids (50 minutes) is the smallest city in the UK. Its splendid cathedral dates back to the 1180s but has been much rebuilt and restored since then; across the calm waters of the River Alun are the imposing ruins of the 14th-century St Davids Bishop’s Palace.
