  • Small Pembrokeshire site on 75 acres of pasture near Crymych
  • In the Preseli Hills, 20 minutes' drive from Cardigan and Newport
  • Simple pitches in a wildlife haven; campfires and dogs welcome
At the edge of the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, in the Preseli Hills and just by the source of the Eastern Cleddau River – doesn’t that just sound like the most fabulous base for a break that really embraces outdoor pursuits? If the answer is yes (and really it should be…), take yourselves along to Caraway Meadows, a quiet and compact little site a couple of miles from the small village of Crymych. This pretty Pembrokeshire spot is a proper wildlife haven in its own right, and it’s in a fine base for days spent walking, mountain biking or horse riding through spectacular scenery. There’s plenty of peace and privacy at this place, with only a small number of guests on site at any time. You’ll be sharing the space with all sorts of wildlife, though – the farm’s 75 acres of pasture have been carefully managed to promote biodiversity, and that means you’ll often spot birds, butterflies, bumblebees and other creatures around the wetlands and meadows. With that in mind, facilities have been kept on the simple side here, but guests have access to all the essentials including showers, compost toilets and a washing-up area. Dogs and kids are most welcome to join you. Barbecues and campfires are permitted on site, so you can look forward to a nice warm evening by the flames when you’re done with exploring for the day – there’s a small shop in the village if you need to pick up any bits to make that happen.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: I can't remember the last time I was somewhere so quiet! The only sounds you hear are the sounds of nature, and there is so much nature! Just sat at the tent on a morning there were robins, wrens, tree creepers, goldcrests and a multitude of interesting butterflies all around us. On a night I saw multiple owls each night. There are no streetlights in the area and no external lights at the farm. The site is therefore great for watching the night skies. You get your own secluded pitch, and they are enormous. You could easily fit 5 or 6 average size tents in each. Each is equipped with its own toilet and firepit. There is also a pleasant communal shower, and barn with fridge/freezer, and mains facilities for charging devices. The hosts are lovely and welcoming. Highly recommended.

Local attractions

Your walking boots or mountain bike should see a good bit of action in the surrounding area, as you head out onto trails that might take you to a Site of Special Scientific Interest, to the stone circles of an Iron Age fort on Foel Drygarn (an hour’s walk) or just to see where your feet take you within the Preseli Hills. If you’d like to soak up a bit more of the area’s history, plan outings to Castell Henllys Iron Age Village and Pentre Ifan Burial Chamber (both 20 minutes’ drive) or learn about artisanal traditions on a tour of the National Wool Museum (35 minutes). Cardigan Castle and Cilgerran Castle (both 20 minutes) are also well worth a visit. And of course you’re never that far from a gorgeous stretch of coastline in Pembrokeshire – in this case it’ll take you about 20 minutes to drive as far as Newport for some time on the beach or a walk along the coast path to the cute hamlet of Cwm-yr-Eglwys. Coasteering and other watersports can be organised in Cardigan if you’d like a little more action.
