Tenby Shepherd's Huts: Surfboards

General

  • Glamping site a five-minute walk from sandy Tenby South beach
  • Tenby town five minutes’ drive; Oakwood Theme Park 20 minutes
  • Cosy huts with kitchens and private deck, plus views of the coast

Coast walks and beach swims by day, cosy huts by night… that's the fine setup at Tenby Shepherd's Huts, a well-maintained family-run site on the outskirts of Tenby and with lovely views out over the west Wales coast. It's just the spot for a glamping holiday in a chilled-out seaside spot – Tenby South beach is about five minutes' walk away and the centre of town a half-hour stroll (or five-minute drive).

The cosy, self-contained shepherd’s huts come with a fridge, sink, an oven and most kitchen facilities to prepare simple meals, which you can then consume on your private decked area with views across the site. If you really miss having dinner in front of your favourite show, there is also a TV. Bedding is provided, as are a barbecue, outdoor table and chairs.

This is a place where you can reconnect to a simpler life, taking in the spectacle of the starry night sky or by falling asleep to the sound of owls hooting. That said, it's also a great base for all sorts of days out, from theme parks to boat trips. A beach stroll is a good idea too, of course – and it's a popular spot for paddleboarders taking to the water. For longer walks, the Pembrokeshire Coast Path passes by as well.

You can get provisions from a farm shop a five-minute drive away, or there are plenty of places to eat in and around the village of Penally (a 10-minute walk) and in Tenby.

Absolutely fabulous shepherd hut, really well equipped, massive deck, very close to beach.

    Disliked:

WiFi was bit weak, showers/toilet need much more ventilation. But the lovely site managers said they were going to fix these.

The Location was perfect. The Accommodation was also lovely and one which my family Loved. The only problem was the comfort of the beds which was poor. The hospitability was good and the area to access facilities was also good. I would recommend to stay again but to improve on the mattress in the man bed.

The shepherds hut was absolutely gorgeous and came stocked with everything you need, including bedding, crockery pans and cutlery. There was even a small welcome pack from the owners with some local treats!

    Disliked:

The toilet and shower block could maybe do with an update, as it’s more in line with the price you’d expect from a camping stay, than the price we paid for the shepherds hut

Gorgeous shepherds hut with everything you need for a family holiday06/08/2022

The hut is very cute and more spacious than it appears on pics. One adult and four older kids 11-15 could fit comfortably and the smaller ones loved the box bunk beds. It was clean and nicely decorated and had all the equipment you could need and some surprise welcome goodies which were much appreciated. There was lots of useful info provided in the welcome pack. The veranda is lovely to sit out on with a sea view and there’s a great BBQ which was well used. It really is only 5 mins walk from a lovely beach. We also did loads of fun activities in the local area including coasteering and dolphin spotting.

    Disliked:

The water pump wasn’t working when we arrived but it was fixed very promptly. The water barrel could use a trolley to transport it more easily. The campsite showers and toilets are adequate and clean but no frills. I would have liked a site map to be included. The Wi-Fi is only for 2 devices and not transferable and I wasn’t able to pay for more after the kids nabbed it!

Local attractions

There should be something for the whole family at Heatherton World of Activities theme park (five minutes’ drive) – not to mention something for any type of weather, with both outdoor and indoor amusements. You can challenge each other in a go-kart race, work together to solve the puzzles in the escape rooms or explore the tree-top trail and its ziplines.

With its mix of gentle, child-friendly amusements and high-octane thrill rides, Oakwood Theme Park (20 minutes) should also keep everybody happy. Adrenaline junkies might make a beeline for the gigantic wooden Megafobia roller coaster or the sky swing, but there are also a downhill bobsleigh and water rides, plus a boating lake.

Caldey Island can be reached in about half an hour (the time to drive to Tenby, plus the boat crossing). Once on this monastic island, you can relax on the sandy beach facing Priory Bay or hike to the lighthouse, keeping an eye out for red squirrels, puffins, Soay sheep and butterflies.

Must see

  • Pembroke Castle (8.6 miles)
  • Pembrokeshire Coast National Park (9.9 miles)
  • Pembrey Country Park (17.6 miles)
