  • Simple back-to-nature site in the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park
  • Boat trips around Ramsey, Skomer and Grassholm a short walk away
  • Spacious grassy pitches, spectacular views and close to the coast
If all you require from a retreat on the Pembrokeshire coast is wide open skies, plenty of grassy space and spectacular views towards St Davids and lush Welsh countryside, it’s a safe bet that Rhosson Campsite will very much float your boat. This family-run site in the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park is a 10-minute walk from the St Davids Lifeboat Station at St Justinian – also the departure point for boat trips around the islands of Ramsey, Skomer and Grassholm – and is half an hour’s walk from the teeny city. Set across two spacious grassy fields, this is a back-to-basics site that aims to keep things nice and simple. When you arrive, pick yourself a preferable pitch in one of two large fields overlooking the spectacular Pembrokeshire countryside; most are on a gentle downhill slope, with some flatter pitches available near the bottom of the field. As befits a simplistic site such as this, there’s oodles of space for kids to bound about and play ball games in, and campfires are also actively encouraged, so be sure to bring plenty of eats, a well-tuned guitar and your very best scary stories… Amenities include cold running water suitable for drinking and washing, as well as outdoor cold showers, and separate ladies’ and gents’ toilets. This site is generally left to run itself so isn’t always staffed – but you'll be provided with contact details should ever you need to get hold of someone.

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked: Very basic as described in the booking. Lovely clean fields, barn where you can charge mobile devices. Stopped for one night had the best sleep on our tour of south wales. Stunning scenery and a quiet beach that’s around 15 minutes walk. If you need a no thrills holiday with gorgeous scenery no brainier. St David’s have a large Nisa supermarket for all your food needs. For a one night stop had a lovely time. Mobile signal very slow if needed.

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked: The location and general atmosphere. Choosing your pitch, setting it up - done.

Disliked: Some people setting up campfires were not mindful at all, that strong wind would blow suffocating smoke and even sparks towards the tents of their neighbours. Not the problem of the campground owners, but something to maybe highlight to all guests. Other than that, toilets are very basic and too few (= one per gender)

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked: Nice location as it was close to the beaches and St. Davids. We had a somewhat pleasant stay; there was lots of space for the kids to run around and our objective was to visit sites in the area rather than spend time on-site. There were no limits on how much space you could take up other than proximity to neighbouring tents. Fires were allowed, which is great.

Disliked: The toilets were disgusting--the male toilet urinal emptied from an open pipe into a drain by your feet. Some unspecified liquid pooled around the floor. Furthermore, were only two very narrow cubicles per gender, leaving desperate campers waiting in the rain. Plus, the toilets were leaky and you could hear the sound of other people's business quite loudly. A word of warning: there are no toilet lights so have a toilet buddy to hold a torch as you go! At least the toilet paper was regularly refilled and dry... We didn't use the showers as they were cold and not all the doors were fixed. The washing-up area was uncovered so we had to wash up in the wind and rain. Another thing to note was that the facilities were far-off depending on where you pitch your tent. Lastly, there was no reception and no-one was available to ask questions.

Liked: The campsite is close to the coastal path, and easy to walk from. Some flat pitches if you are lucky. Cheap.

Disliked: The two toilets, not enough for all those campers. Cold showers, no thanks. One wash up sink. Very noisy people and children running around screaming next to my van for hours. The people who decided it was a good idea to use a generator at night, plus a very bright light over the camp. After one night I moved to another campsite down the lane which was more expensive but brilliant.

Local attractions

As the site's right in the middle of the Pembrokeshire National Coast Park, there’s a whole heap to do around here. Start off at the RNLI St Davids Lifeboat Station at St Justinian to take a boat tour around Ramsey, Skomer and Grassholm and to look out for seals, porpoises, dolphins and whales. A short two-mile drive (or half an hour’s walk) away is the handsome city of St Davids, with a 12th-century cathedral, the ruins of the medieval Bishops Palace and a good collection of independent shops and excellent eateries to peruse. Spectacular beaches fringe this area’s coastline too: a short walk away is the enclosed sandy cove of Porthsele, a splendid and peaceful spot for open beach fires and sunset gazing. Award-winning Whitesands, famed for its soft golden sands, clear waters and watersports, is the most popular beach on the peninsula and an easy three-mile drive from Rhosson, or if you’re confident when it comes to navigating tide times, you can walk to it at low tide from Porthsele. For outdoorsy and adventurous activities, a company based in St Davids organises activities such as coasteering, kayaking, surfing, and climbing for individuals and groups.
