Llanungar Caravan and Camping: View of the 'Paddock' - grass pitches without electric

General

  • Small site in Pembrokeshire, less than a mile from Solva harbour
  • A 15-minute walk from a pebbled cove and the Pembrokeshire Coast Path
  • Sea views over countryside from the pitches

Wherever you’re travelling from, it's highly recommended that you arrive at Llanungar Caravan Park and Camping while it’s still light. The reason? Those sunsets. Take a quick browse of the pictures and you’ll see that evenings in this part of west Wales are frequently ridiculously photogenic…

But it’s not just the sunsets that are snapworthy around here – Llanungar is a 15-minute walk from a pebbled cove and the Pembrokeshire Coast Path, where you can spend your days rambling for miles between clifftops, enormous beaches, volcanic headlands and quiet coves. If that sounds like too much effort, you’ll be pleased to hear that there are sea views to be had on site, with the added bonus of uninterrupted countryside as a foreground.

Walk down into the village of Solva (less than a mile) and it may well be time to get the camera out again, for here you’ll come across one of the prettiest harbours in Wales. This is also likely to be your go-to place for local amenities – it’s got a convenience store, several small shops and a handful of cafés and restaurants (speak nicely to the right people and you can have fresh seafood and shellfish to take back to your pitch).

The site and facilities were immaculate the whole time (5 days) and constantly cleaned. The pitches were level, well spaced out, with decent hedges most of the way around to help with shelter. Super helpful and friendly couple running the site, and wide range of information easily available in the cabin. Location was very convenient for coast path and village facilities. Free WiFi which reached the tent! A kettle was provided in the washing up room for quickly boiling water, which I thought was a very nice touch, and certainly proved useful. Fairly small site.

    Disliked:

I was under the impression we would be able to select our pitch, but we were in fact allocated one. This worked out well this time, but it is often something which would put me off a site.

From the manager...

Thank you so much for the detailed and complimentary review, we really appreciate your feedback. During busy periods, we do allocate pitches on arrival, but consideration is also given to the type of unit and where it may be best placed for unpleasant weather conditions using the hedgerows as a windbreaker. As it's generally quieter at the beginning and end of season, guests are given a choice of available pitches. We value your recommendation to others and we hope to welcome you back in the future.

Washroom was spotless and the free showers were fantastic.
The site owners were lovely and the information room was fantastically equipped, it even had a large table and chairs in it with a large tv. There was lots of books, dvd’s and even jigsaws to borrow.
The area is beautiful with a nice little walk to the nearest shop that sold everything and buses that ran both ways along the coast road to St Davids or over to Haverfordwest through Newgate.

    Disliked:

We were located on a small grass pitch, as with the other pitches nearby it had a dry patch in the middle, probably caused by the dry weather earlier this year or by people pitching awnings with unbreathable carpet killing the grass, but because we had so much rain during our stay, the patch area in the middle of our pitch got very muddy just with us walking back and forth to our van. Pitches were divided by uncut grass which was good and looked pretty, but the pitches were not uniform, some were huge and some very small.

From the manager...

Thank you for the review, we really appreciate your feedback and its nice to read you enjoyed the site and surrounding area. We have had a very busy season so consequently the pitches do not recover as quickly as hoped, especially if non breathable ground sheets are used and weather is poor, even for a short period. We are very pleased to see it hasn't deterred you from visiting again or recommending to friends, we hope to welcome you back again in the future.

We had a great stay at Llanungar and would definitely come back again. As soon as we arrived we were greeted by the site owner who was lovely and made us feel immediately welcome. The reception area and facilities are easy to access and had everything we needed, including a little kettle which we made good use of. One of the main things we liked was how clean the toilets and facilities were, it really stood out and shows how well looked after the place is. Because the regular tent field was closing for one day for maintenance during our stay, we were upgraded to the EHU field, and I have to say even though we don't use the electric hook up, we would still pay a bit extra to stay in the slightly larger and flatter field.

Local attractions

There are natural attractions galore in this part of Pembrokeshire, to be explored at paces ranging from laidback to adrenaline-fuelled.

The small cove of Porth y Rhaw is 15 minutes away on foot and pebbly Gwadn beach a few minutes’ by car from the site. For something on a grander scale, head five miles east to Newgale or west to Whitesands Bay, for swathes of sandy beach and some of the best surfing in Wales.

Pembrokeshire is the home of coasteering, a mix of walking, wild swimming, cliff jumping and climbing for the headily adventurous: organise these trips, along with sea kayaking, climbing, paddleboarding and surf lessons two miles away in St Davids.

Less than a mile from Llanungar is the little fishing village of Solva, whose harbour has grown around a natural coastal inlet. Rows of colourful houses, shops and restaurants lead to it, where you can sit in a café and watch the boats going about their business. At high tide, there’s crabbing to be done here too, but if you’ve not caught enough for dinner you can buy fresh seafood from the village shop.
