Looking at the farm and site from the air... not a bad spot!

General

  • On a 250-acre National Trust farm with stunning sea views
  • Wildlife haven five minutes' walk from the Pembrokeshire Coast Path
  • Pitch where you like in a spacious camping field

Look at the pics. Look. At. The. Pics. Celtic Camping in Pembrokeshire is in an utterly lush location, four miles south of also utterly lush St Davids and on the 250-acre working and wildlife-laden National Trust farm of Pwll Caerog, part of which is a Site of Special Scientific Interest. And then there’s the beach: the pebbly cove of Aber Pwll is at the foot of the farm about five minutes’ walk away.

You’ll be reeling with glee at the views from all around here, right across the Irish Sea and Abereiddy Bay with slate quarry-filled Blue Lagoon, a deeply desirable spot for diving and twice host of the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series. If you want walkies, the Pembrokeshire Coast Path is about 500 metres from the farm and coastal trails run from Abereiddy to the village of Porthcain in one direction, and to Whitesands Bay via St Davids Head in the other.

Pitch anywhere you like around the roomy field: this is a relaxed and friendly site with loads of space for all: dogs, families, individuals and couples included. Toilets and showers are cleaned and maintained on a regular basis.

The site also has a large temporary indoor dining area, but you might reckon this is one of the most viewsome places around to eat alfresco: campfires and barbecues are – naturally – allowed, and firewood or charcoal can be bought from the amiable Celtic Camping team.

Please note

Dogs are not allowed in the accommodation units.

What a fabulous location! Fantastic views out over the cliffs and the sea. Lovely and dark at night, and it was a clear night, so there was a view of the stars you just don't get in, or near a town. Right next to the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path, too, so another bonus.
We went there as we were picking up a new pup from South Wales, and needed somewhere remote to stay because of Coronavirus social isolation, and this was perfect. Only three other motorhomes on the site, so plenty of space to keep our distance, and nobody else camping. We didn't use any of the facilities there for obvious reasons, but they looked excellent. We stayed for one night, but would happily go back there when the present situation changes. Highly recommended.

Staff explained to me as the site was quite empty and the water wasnt being used it would take some time for it to get hot, left the tap running for 5minutes and it was still cold but it was a small price to pay for athe panoramic views

From the manager...

Thank you Tony for taking the time and effort to write a review, it is greatly appreciated. We are really pleased to hear that our staff are very friendly informative and provide a warm welcome, as this is something we strive for. It is also great that we got a positive remark for our location and the stunning views from our site - we are blessed with an amazing location that overlooks the Irish Sea and St Georges channel - even in Storm Ciara, the raging sea was a spectacle to behold from our campsite.

We are sorry that the hot water takes so long to come through - we do try to warn everyone during these winter months both by email and verbally on arrival that when there are no other campers on-site, we do not have the pull-through of water from our boiler system, which is located at the far end of the building - consequently it can take 10 or more mins you purge the hot water system - we do ask for patience during the winter months, as hot water is not instant. Whilst it may have been a small price to pay after the panoramic views, we still want our customers to enjoy the facilities we offer - hopefully any fellow campers reading this will heed our advice and keep the water running from the hot tap until it becomes warm/hot. There is definitely hot water on-site as the gas boilers deliver it on demand - it just slower during the winter months.

We do hope that you will return and enjoy what we have to offer - regards John

The views were amazing. Very friendly staff. The Sloop inn was very welcoming. The whole area is a treasure to explore. We will visit again.

    Disliked:

Phone signal is poor around the coast. Very exposed, so wind can be an issue. We stayed during a gale for the first time, a little un nerving at first. Pointed the caravan into the wind on the second night so the van was more stable. Wifi an extra cost but worth it as the phone signal was non existent.

No hot water for showers or washing up

From the manager...

Hi Nikki

Sadly, as you were one of the only campers on site, we do not have the pull-through of water on the system as it comes from the either end of the building. Our gas boilers., which work on demand are on continuously but at this time of year with so few campers, you need to let the system run until it comes warm - it can take quite a while. I'm sure that you are not the first and you certainly will not be the last to have mentioned this - what we will do on the back of your comments to place a sign to inform customers that they need to keep the water running through the system until it becomes warm / /hot. I can promise you there the boilers are always on and working, as I have stood there with other campers who insisted that there was no hot water and whilst it took a whilst eventually it came through.

Hopefully, if you use our site again, you will be able to take advantage of the our facilities and experience the hot water we have on tap. Have a great weekend - John

The views were lovely and the staff were cheerful and helpful!

    Disliked:

The facilities particularly the floors were dirty and the site looked in need of some care and attention. At the weekend a large group arrived on site and on the /saturday evening were partying noisily until well after 23:00 hours, this did not show any consideration for other campers who were trying to get to sleep.

From the manager...

Dear David, we are extremely sorry that your stay was below par and we are saddened to hear that the facilities were not cleaned to our normally high standard, as this is something that we pride ourselves on, which you can see in our other reviews.

The weekend that you came down coincided with the inaugural "Great Tits" Weekend, which was a large party of female Open Sea Swimmers, under the "Blue Tits" banner, so this added to the amount of mess in the toilets and showers. In hindsight, having a reduced number of staff on duty during this weekend, (as we are outside of the normal camping period), was a contributing factor - again we are sorry that this impacted on your stay. We have learnt from this and will ensure that we have the correct staff numbers on site to cope with the cleaning demands during this event and provide the high standard that is expected from us and we know we can deliver.

As this was the first time that we had hosted The Great Tits Weekend, we were unsure what the weekend would comprise of. So having a large number of females from across the UK descended on site, they quite rightly wanted to party and celebrate their first gathering.

Normally, when we know that there is going to be a large party that could impact on others users, we either pre warn campers or block off the camping element of the site. Sadly, their enthusiastic partying took us by surprise and I'm sorry that your sleep was disturbed - again we have learnt some valuable lessons about hosting this event and the restriction we need to have in place for campers during this period.

What we are not sure about is the remark "the site looked in need of some attention" Throughout the year, we have a dedicated maintenance team but we are limited to what we can achieve when campers and schools are here - normally we conduct a deep clean and refurbishment programme during the winter months - we can only attribute this remark to the fact that you used our site at the end of what has been a very long camping season and may have seen some elements that have suffered from either weathering or over use.

We really hope this has not put you off Pembrokeshire and more importantly our site - maybe if you would like to come down again when it doesn't coincide with this type of group being here, you should get a totally different experience.

Warmest regards, John - Site Manager

Local attractions

Coasteering, kayaking, sailing, surfing, rock climbing and other hair-raising and scenic adventures are all around, with several activity centres easily reachable from Celtic Camping; the site staff can arrange something for those who’d like to plunge in.

If you’re taking to the area under your own steam, Pembrokeshire has dozens of eye-wateringly pretty Blue flag beaches to pick from: award-winning Whitesands, about 40 minutes’ walk from Abereiddy Bay, is a hit with surfers for the breaks on its northern end.

A little further along the coast from Whitesands and towards the north end of St Brides Bay on St Davids Peninsula, slip around to the fishing village and harbour of Solva to drop jaw at the views around the Griben coastal walk. Pick up freshly dressed Pembrokeshire crab at the village seafood shop for later back at the barbie: three pubs, two cafés and two restaurants are around too for a pitstop.

The Puffin Shuttle coastal bus goes from Solva to Britain’s smallest city St Davids three times a day in summer: get the early one to see the cathedral properly as well as Bishops Palace beside it.
