Celtic Camping: Sun setting over the Irish Sea

General

  • On a 250-acre National Trust farm with stunning sea views
  • Wildlife haven five minutes' walk from the Pembrokeshire Coast Path
  • Pitch where you like in a spacious camping field

Look at the pics. Look. At. The. Pics. Celtic Camping in Pembrokeshire is in an utterly lush location, four miles north of also utterly lush St Davids and on the 250-acre working and wildlife-laden National Trust farm of Pwll Caerog, part of which is a Site of Special Scientific Interest. And then there’s the beach: the pebbly cove of Aber Pwll is at the foot of the farm about five minutes’ walk away.

You’ll be reeling with glee at the views from all around here, right across the Irish Sea and Abereiddy Bay with slate quarry-filled Blue Lagoon, a deeply desirable spot for diving and twice host of the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series. If you want walkies, the Pembrokeshire Coast Path is about 500 metres from the farm and coastal trails run from Abereiddy to the village of Porthgain in one direction, and to Whitesands Bay via St Davids Head in the other.

Pitch anywhere you like around the roomy field: this is a relaxed and friendly site with loads of space for all: dogs, families, individuals and couples included. Toilets and showers are cleaned and maintained on a regular basis.

The site also has a large temporary indoor dining area, but you might reckon this is one of the most viewsome places around to eat alfresco: campfires and barbecues are – naturally – allowed, and firewood or charcoal can be bought from the amiable Celtic Camping team.

Please note

If making a fire, the fuel, logs and coal have to be purchased on site.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

The view is outstanding! We watched the dolphins play during the sun set. Toilets are clean and showers are warm! Pitch sizes are great and staff are lovely. WiFi is available but if you’ve gone to this campsite you shouldn’t be on your phones, you should be looking at the views!

    Disliked:

Read the warning on the website, it can be very windy!!! So if you’re in larger groups take it in turns to put up your tent. Sadly on our final night there was a lot of choice individuals, that were smoking rather … herbal cigarettes. This spoilt the last night for us.
Be careful on the roads in, especially if you have a town car, only wide enough for one car, so you will need to pull into the bushes to allow others to pass, and the growth on the middle of the roads scrape the bottom on your car. Was a sickening feeling being on those roads.

You can't argue with the views, the incredible views. The sunset over the campsite was wonderful - you'd pay a lot for that in Ibiza.
You can arrive and leave at any time, which means on the last day, no early start frantically trying to pack a tent and get out by 10am! Much appreciated.
It was also spacious, clean and quiet.
A day at Whitesands beach and a visit to St Davids were highlights.

    Disliked:

They were doing no food on site the week we were there (UK half term) and the wind on the cliff was so cold that I had the odd combination of being sunburned and absolutely freezing at the same time (I had to do a trip to Mountain Warehouse in St Davids to buy a dryrobe, so I could warm up) - obviously not their fault, but be warned that cold wind is brutally cold!
The walk to the toilets / showers / washing up facilities was also untenably far, which has put me off a return visit. I've never been such a distance from the facilities while camping before. With my mobility issues (hip replacement) it was absolutely torturous. They say on their site that in the summer they put in portaloos, but it was obviously too early for that. There are pitches nearer the toilets that we saw, so if you do have any issues with mobility, definitely contact them in advance and request a pitch near the facilities!
Also (not an issue for us, but perhaps relevant to some) they do have WiFi, but it is patchy and poor. We found it best to download messages in the ladies loos!

I spent three days here, and because of its location, it has become my favourite campsite so far. The views are breathtaking, and the sunsets are truly beautiful.

Within a 10-minute walk, there is a charming small beach, and just 20 minutes away, there is a larger one. Both walks are delightful experiences.

I would have gladly extended my stay, and I am definitely planning to return. Our children absolutely loved it here, and a place like this doesn't require a playground. It boasts a beach, which became the main attraction for my kids during our stay.

    Disliked:

On the final evening, it started to get crowded, possibly due to a festival. While most people were considerate, there was a young group next to us who kept their car engine running all night while smoking weed inside. I have no problem with the weed itself, but leaving the engine on for warmth at 3 am was incredibly frustrating. It's important to note that this only happened on the last night, and the other nights were peaceful, despite the upcoming festival.

Additionally, there was no nearby convenience store, so it would be wonderful if one were to be established at the campsite.

The sea views were amazing, the kids enjoyed watching the dolphins play. The staff were very friendly and the shower block and toilets were clean.

    Disliked:

The narrow winding roads, and the nearest shop was 30 minutes drive. There was nothing for the kids to do. The ground was hard so pegs were difficult to get in the ground and most of them have had to be thrown away as they bent.

Local attractions

Coasteering, kayaking, sailing, surfing, rock climbing and other hair-raising and scenic adventures are all around, with several activity centres easily reachable from Celtic Camping; the site staff can arrange something for those who’d like to plunge in.

If you’re taking to the area under your own steam, Pembrokeshire has dozens of eye-wateringly pretty Blue flag beaches to pick from: award-winning Whitesands, about 40 minutes’ walk from Abereiddy Bay, is a hit with surfers for the breaks on its northern end.

A little further along the coast from Whitesands and towards the north end of St Brides Bay on St Davids Peninsula, slip around to the fishing village and harbour of Solva to drop jaw at the views around the Griben coastal walk. Pick up freshly dressed Pembrokeshire crab at the village seafood shop for later back at the barbie: three pubs, two cafés and two restaurants are around too for a pitstop.

The Puffin Shuttle coastal bus goes from Solva to Britain’s smallest city St Davids three times a day in summer: get the early one to see the cathedral properly as well as Bishops Palace beside it.
