Celtic Camping: Ready for adventure

General

  • On a 250-acre National Trust farm with stunning sea views
  • Wildlife haven five minutes' walk from the Pembrokeshire Coast Path
  • Pitch where you like in a spacious camping field

Look at the pics. Look. At. The. Pics. Celtic Camping in Pembrokeshire is in an utterly lush location, four miles south of also utterly lush St Davids and on the 250-acre working and wildlife-laden National Trust farm of Pwll Caerog, part of which is a Site of Special Scientific Interest. And then there’s the beach: the pebbly cove of Aber Pwll is at the foot of the farm about five minutes’ walk away.

You’ll be reeling with glee at the views from all around here, right across the Irish Sea and Abereiddy Bay with slate quarry-filled Blue Lagoon, a deeply desirable spot for diving and twice host of the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series. If you want walkies, the Pembrokeshire Coast Path is about 500 metres from the farm and coastal trails run from Abereiddy to the village of Porthcain in one direction, and to Whitesands Bay via St Davids Head in the other.

Pitch anywhere you like around the roomy field: this is a relaxed and friendly site with loads of space for all: dogs, families, individuals and couples included. Toilets and showers are cleaned and maintained on a regular basis.

The site also has a large temporary indoor dining area, but you might reckon this is one of the most viewsome places around to eat alfresco: campfires and barbecues are – naturally – allowed, and firewood or charcoal can be bought from the amiable Celtic Camping team.

    Disliked:

Long walk to chemical toilet waste and had to jump over small ditch to use the electric hook up. £30 per night maybe too expensive

From the manager...

Very many thanks for taking the time to produce a review Alan - great that you picked up on the fact we have amazing sea view over the cliffs - our site which sits overlooking the Irish Sea.

Clearly, when you arrived you turned up on the back of our site development and it looks like you went and sited yourself where we had dug up and laid a new electrical cable lay. Not sure why you were up on the top site as we have been keeping everyone away from that area as it is under development - it would also account for the distance to the chemical waste disposal point - normally you would have been placed in the established electrical hook-up field directly in front of the chemical waste piont.

We also feel that we offer good value for money and given the significant numbers that use our site and are returning customers, it would seem that we have got our pricing structure just about right.

We are very sorry that you feel you would not visit again - if you change your mind Alan and Glenda we would love to see you, especially when all the restrictions are lifted and we can operate as normal.

Stay safe and keep well - John

Due to the time of years very wet muddy pitch

From the manager...

Dear Serjit - very many thanks for taking the time and effort to produce a review and great to see a returning customer coming to our site again and fantastic that you had a great time down here once again.

Unfortunately, unlike your visit in August of 2018, arriving here during the winter, does mean that you are likely to encounter wetter conditions - but given that you opted to come during these winter months, I'm positive you would have expected this, especially given that you would have seen the weather forecast, which has been very mild thus causing us to have loads of rain - so given that you only booked this 2 days before arriving, I'm sure you would have known that it was going to be very wet. Also having stayed on our site before you would have also known that we are an open field site - so no surprises there.

Normally you would have been taken to the firmer standing pitches - however due to illness we had a significant an number of staff away - hence you may not have to shown to the firmest side of the camping field, which is not muddy.

These damp conditions can also result in grass and mud being walked into the toilets and showers - and whilst we do have staff assigned to cleaning them, they are less frequent than during our summer months.

We are though pleased that you were once again, able to take in the amazing sea views and that you would revisit our site. Hopefully if you do opt to return, it will be in drier conditions and it will not be so muddy for you!!

Stay safe and have a good Christmas - John

Hi Christopher
Many thanks for taking the time to leave a review and your feedback.
It's great to hear that you liked the site and appreciated the amazing location we have here and fantastic views and walks right on our doorstep.
We are generally pretty lucky with our drainage on-site meaning that the campsite very rarely suffers from problems with access so sorry that you found this slightly problematic. Luckily, being on a farm, we always have a manitou on hand to assist with anyone having problems in this respect, if needed.
We hope that we will see you again in the near future.

Hi Christina

Thank you so much for taking the time and effort to write a review - we really do appreciate it. We are so pleased that you were able to enjoy our amazing views - we are truly blessed to be located on a farm that overlooks the Irish sea, so that you can take in St Georges Channel and Aberieddi & the Blue Lagoon.

It was also pleasing to read that you found our showers to be clean and hot - even during the winter months, we still have a dedicated cleaning team that refreshes the toilets and showers on a regular basis. Whilst it can take a short while to get the hot water through the system when we have reduced campers on-site - the gas boiler system really does produce an excellent hot water feed for the showers.

Thank you also for your remark about being well organised and it was great to see that you gave us full marks for our customer service - we do try extremely hard to ensure that not only are customers provided with all of their arrival information but everything on site is organised and ready for easy use.

We do hope that you will use our site again - stay safe John

We don't really want to say how much we liked camping here because we don't want too many people to know how good it was :-)

Ian made us really welcome and we were blown away by the views; to wake up in our camper van every morning looking out to sea was stunning.

Really clean showers, toilets and a well thought out process for Covid, to keep you safe. There is a large warm area to sit in if you needed it, with hot water for your thermos flasks, a fridge and a freezer, if you need them, with plenty of space to wash up.

Wishing Ian, family and his team all the best for the future after what must have been a very difficult 2020 for them.

From the manager...

Hi Fiona
Thanks so much for leaving a 10/10 rating and a really nice review. It has been a tricky 2020, as it has been for many people, but being able to read such positive feedback from campers about the site and their stay with us helps enormously. The views really are the star feature of the campsite aren't they, but we're really pleased to hear that you found all the facilities up to scratch too. Thank you for your best wishes and we look forward to being able to welcome you to Celtic Camping again soon.

Local attractions

Coasteering, kayaking, sailing, surfing, rock climbing and other hair-raising and scenic adventures are all around, with several activity centres easily reachable from Celtic Camping; the site staff can arrange something for those who’d like to plunge in.

If you’re taking to the area under your own steam, Pembrokeshire has dozens of eye-wateringly pretty Blue flag beaches to pick from: award-winning Whitesands, about 40 minutes’ walk from Abereiddy Bay, is a hit with surfers for the breaks on its northern end.

A little further along the coast from Whitesands and towards the north end of St Brides Bay on St Davids Peninsula, slip around to the fishing village and harbour of Solva to drop jaw at the views around the Griben coastal walk. Pick up freshly dressed Pembrokeshire crab at the village seafood shop for later back at the barbie: three pubs, two cafés and two restaurants are around too for a pitstop.

The Puffin Shuttle coastal bus goes from Solva to Britain’s smallest city St Davids three times a day in summer: get the early one to see the cathedral properly as well as Bishops Palace beside it.
