  • Green camping on a Pembrokeshire farmstead with Preseli Hills views
  • A 15-minute drive to Folly Farm Adventure Park; 25 minutes to Tenby
  • Firepits, woodland and a conservation lake; sheltered communal spaces
Looking for off-grid, sustainable and green camping on a Pembrokeshire farm? Somewhere far from any road but near lots of stuff to do with the family? You’ve just found it at the secluded Cilrath Wood Camping, with glorious Preseli Hill views and easy access to theme parks and beaches. Pitches are dotted around in the old hay meadow bordered by ancient woodland and a small wildlife lake – or, for even more seclusion, you could opt for a pitch in the woodland. Each area has its own picnic bench and firepit with a cooking grid for a real outdoor-living experience. A corner of the meadow can accommodate up to three families who want to camp together. Daily serviced compost toilets (and a brightly painted kids’ loo) have wash basins, and you'll also have access to hot showers. Meanwhile ,two sheltered communal spaces are smashing for evening get-togethers. Homemade fudge, marmalade and fresh laid eggs are usually available too. Just so you know, there’s a parking area for one vehicle per pitch a short walk from the camping field. Vehicle access is only permitted for those with campervans, but guests can get to the pitches easily on foot, following mown paths and tracks. The owners may be able to move stuff to your pitch on a trailer if needed. Wheelbarrows are on hand for use during the rest of your stay. Modern additions? There's a flushing toilet in the reception shed. You are welcome to use the freezer and fridge there too, along with the USB charge points and local maps. Firewood and firelighters are available to buy. Anything else you need in the way of supplies can be sourced in the indie shops of Narberth (five minutes’ drive).

Old Hay Meadow non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Absolutely loved Cilrath! Exactly as described. The most peaceful campsite we’ve been too. Amazing views and great pitches with loads of privacy. Everything had been thought of with the eco friendly products ready to use for washing up etc. The Grumpy Farmer was the most helpful person, especially with the tractor ride down to our site. We loved the fire pits available to have a campfire every night too . Highlight was the showers, hot water and sheltered but still had the sun on your face! Will definitely be coming back, thank you for a great stay!

Old Hay Meadow non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: A lot! A very warm welcome on arrival after a long journey and given a nice tour of the facilities. Camped in the main field. Pitches are very widely spread, so even if "busy" it feels peaceful. Pitches very well maintained and a good size. Fire pits provided are a perfect size and the picnic bench on the pitch was a huge bonus. Children loved the tractor ride from the parking area down to the pitch (very helpful with carrying the family sized tent down to the pitch too!) Facilities are basic, but very well maintained. Narberth is a short drive away for essentials (recommend the Hub/Hwb for street food). Superb location to explore the SW corner of Wales, with some excellent coastal walks and brilliant beaches all around 30 minutes away.

Disliked: Nothing that I disliked, but would be helpful if there was hot water in the washing up area, plus maybe a light, even a sensor one like in the toilets :o)

Liked: A lot of space, clean showers and toilets, nice owners. Nice to have your own fire-pit and picknicktable

Disliked: No light in the wash-basin area, and no hooks to hang my towel.

Woodland non-electric forest floor tent pitch

Liked: A well-maintained Green site on a working farm, offering meadow and woodland camping in peaceful surroundings (including two home-made stone circles) with terrific views, especially at sunrise/sunset There are showers, compost toilets, a washroom and a covered seating/ washing-up area on site as well as a shed at the farm offering a flushing toilet, phone charging, fridges for food storage, bags of wood, firelighters, matches and eggs. The self-described Grumpy Farmer is a charming and helpful host. Each pitch has its own picnic table and fire bowl. The site is quiet from 11pm-8am and no music is allowed. Narbreth with its pubs, restaurants and shops is only a short distance away and the coast is within easy reach.

Valley View non-electric grass and gravel campervan pitch

Liked: A slice of heaven! Enchanting place that we loved so much we stayed an extra night. Grumpy Pete is really helpful and the site is well maintained. Lovely compost loos, hot showers and large pitches. You are provided a fire bowl which is great for cooking. Really special campsite. Close to lush beaches on the south coast. Will definitely be coming back.

Valley View non-electric grass and gravel campervan pitch

Liked: We loved this campsite. The bluebell wood setting is beautiful, there we tadpoles in the pond. The cat, dog, ducks and chickens on the farm were lovely. We had fresh eggs every day, fires every evening. The facilities are so well made and maintained, I really appreciated the quality of these as it isn't always the case on campsites. Pete is a lovely host, very kind and thoughtful, he brought us some fresh coriander and was often around for a chat and help with anything we needed. Can't wait to go back!

Local attractions

Ancient castles dot the Pembrokeshire landscape; Narberth (five minutes’ drive) has its own photogenic castle ruins and there’s a former garrison and gatehouse to potter around at Llawhaden Castle (10 minutes’ drive). Treat well-behaved kids to rides at Oakwood Theme Park (10 minutes), or take toddlers to Folly Farm Adventure Park and Zoo (15 minutes) to meet owls and meerkats. The Dinosaur Park (25 minutes) is the place for go-karting and monster-infested jungle safaris, and Blue Lagoon Water Park (10 minutes) has wave machines and a lazy river. For beach days, there’s the whole of the Pembrokeshire peninsula to choose from, including Tenby (25 minutes) and surf-friendly Newgale (half an hour). Turn inland for mountain biking or fishing at Llys y Fran Country Park and Reservoir (25 minutes), or hone your skills on the waves at Wild Lakes Wales (10 minutes). Kids still going strong? The paintball and archery at Heatherton World of Activities (25 minutes) might just tire them out.
