  • Pop-up Pembrokeshire wild camping site on a working organic farm
  • A 10-minute drive from Broad Haven beach; 15 minutes from Newgale
  • Pub five minutes’ walk away and footpath nearby on an old railway line
A peaceful spot where it’s possible to peer out over the Preseli Hills and Pembrokeshire scenery certainly sounds like a good deal. With your spot signed and sealed at Portfield Camping, there’s a lot to look forward to indeed… This pop-up wild camping site is on a working organic farm in an off-grid part of Pembrokeshire. It’s an excellent pick for rural rambles and bike rides away from the bigger crowds. A particular favourite of the owners is the nearby footpath and cycling path for trundles along the old Brunel railway line to Neyland, but there’s also always the very rewarding option of wandering to the local pub, which is only a five-minute walk away, for a pint and some dinner. Pitches at Portfield Camping are part of an eight-acre field where guest numbers are kept low to maximise space and peace. It’s part of a larger 30-acre farm, but the site is livestock free and the furry or woolly residents in the surrounding fields are very quiet. Being a rural spot, you may very well spot wildlife around the place – and there’s always some gorgeous scenery to look at too. Still, despite all those peaceful rural vibes, the site’s just off the B4327, which means it’s only a five-minute drive from Haverfordwest for all your typical town amenities. You'll be able to get to Pembrokeshire’s beaches, castles and family-friendly theme parks in a jiffy too – it’s a 10-minute drive to Broad Haven beach and 25 minutes to Oakwood Theme Park. Facilities on site are very simple – this is wild camping, remember – and include a composting toilet and running water (but no showers). Barbecues have the go-ahead, just as long as they’re kept off the pitches.

Local attractions

If the sound of boat trips to Skomer Island or chilled-out days on the sandy shore at Marloes Sands (25 minutes’ drive) sound tempting, you'll be pleased to hear that the Dale peninsula is easy to get to from Portfield Camping despite it being one of the more remote Pembrokeshire points. Equally enticing are the beaches of St Brides Bay. Dabble in horse-riding at Nolton Haven (15 minutes) or take up the kit hire or surf lessons that Newgale (15 minutes) is so well known for. It’s likely that you’ve selected this particular site for its peaceful nature, but that doesn’t mean you can’t throw a few thrills into the mix. Folly Farm Adventure Park and Zoo (half an hour) and Heatherton World of Activities (35 minutes) will deliver on that front. Of course, there are all sorts of scenic walks to be had on the Pembrokeshire Coast Path, whichever section you select.
