  • Family-run, dog-friendly site 300 metres from Llys-y-Frân Reservoir
  • A 15-minute drive to Preseli Hills; half an hour to the coast
  • Campfires allowed; watersports and cycling tracks on the lake nearby
Heading to Pembrokeshire in hunt of bays, Iron Age villages and streets lined with Georgian houses? Perhaps a peaceful place to touch down in a meadow, just 300 metres from the Llys y Frân Country Park & Reservoir? If you’d like to roll out of bed and get stuck into watersports or end your day with a wander along the lakeside, the dog-friendly family farm site at Llys-Y-Frân Meadow Campsite is a peaceful spot to lay your head down in West Wales, just outside the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park. Sailing, canoeing, kayaking, paddleboarding, fishing or open water swimming… with Llys-y-Frân Reservoir five minutes’ stroll away from the site, watersports can certainly be on the cards. Or, if you’d rather keep on dry land, the lake has a splendid seven-mile walk and 14 kilometres of bicycle tracks (including pump bike tracks). Back at base, you may want to set up a campfire, look at the stars or listen out for the wildlife around the site. With plenty of space in the meadow, children have room to stretch their legs or splash around in the stream (and well-behaved dogs on leads can join them, too). Tell the kids to keep an eye out for farmer Nigel on his rounds. Hosts Rachel and Nigel are always happy to point out cows and sheep grazing in the pastures or help you map out your way to Maenclochog (five minutes’ drive), the local traditional Welsh village with a small food shop, cosy café and village pub.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Beautiful surroundings with a short walk from the country park, lovely facilities that were always so well maintained. Great little play area and lots of space for the kids to safely run around. Rachel was always so kind and helpful, she arrived at the campsite multiple times a day to make sure everything was ok and was only ever a txt or call away if you needed anything. We were hit with storm Betty on our final night and Rachel came to the camp site on numerous occasions that evening to make sure everyone was ok. Unfortunately we missed the pizza night but hopefully get to experience it the next time we’re back!

Disliked: Nothing

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: The campsite is really lovely, perfect for children young and older. So much thought and consideration has gone into this site by Rachel. Immaculately clean, facilities exactly what you need. Rachel couldn’t do more for you as a host, really cares about your experience and stay. Great to see her whole family getting involved in her business too, her lad mowing the lawn, her daughter helping out when it was pizza night on the Friday 👏🏻 plus the pizzas were the best we’ve tasted in a long time! The lake 2 mins walk down the road was perfect for outdoor activities climbing wall, mtb and running. Our dog loved it too! 🐾 cafe great, friendly staff. Thank you Rachel for a lovely holiday X See you next year!

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Fantastic site, we stayed two nights and there was lots of information about where to explore nearby. The facilities were really great for a small site and kept really clean - I liked how it was modern but still felt like camping. There were some good essentials available to buy like marshmallows and skewers! A tree swing, a couple of slides and somewhere to play football meant children were kept amused on site so that’s always a bonus!

Disliked: Nothing bad to say about it.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: We absolutely loved Rachel and Nigel‘s campsite! We camped on a non-electric pitch for a week with three children, 9, 7 and 3. Rachel was often on site, friendly and chatty and has clearly put a lot of thought and effort into the facilities. She helped us pick our pitch, then Nigel and their team of little helpers freshly mowed it for us. The site is very safe, and we were happy to let all three children run off and play. There is a rope swing, two slides, sandpit, and football pitch, all easily visible from every tent, so it took about two minutes before they were all romping around in the grass and we achieved the camping goal of free, happy kids, and happy parents! I would highly rate the facilities. We had a particularly rainy week, but it was a pleasure standing in the clean, bright and welcoming communal shelter, getting ready for bed and washing up, with the hot outdoor showers. The lockers for charging our phones with an honesty box were unusual and a particular highlight for us. Don’t forget to bring cash! The site is very rural, and it does take 30-40 minutes to get to the coast in any direction. However, as it’s so central this means that most of Pembrokeshire’s attractions (and there are many!) are within that radius. There are lots of land and water activities at the Reservoir including a pleasant cafe and play area for a short reason to get off site. The boys loved the Crazi Bugs and it’s good value. We went to Dr Benyon’s bug farm, which I would highly recommend in the rain! Narberth is lovely and fab for groceries. The small and healthy Nourish cafe in Haverfordwest was such a find for breakfast one morning. Fresh milk and milkshakes from Llaeth Presili Milk and Gelato was a pleasure (take a container). We went to Saundersfoot (arcade in the rain, yummy independent shops, beach, walk to Wiseman’s bridge for a pub or ice cream), Carew Castle and Tidal Mill provides a lovely castle to explore with thoughtful entertainment for the kids, great crabbing, and bat watching! Also went on the inflatable obstacle course at Wild Lakes Wales (also good in the rain!). We did loads of activities due to the rain, but you could equally spend much longer on site as it was well sheltered, BBQs and campfires allowed as long as they are raised, or fire pits to hire. We barely scratched the surface of local activities!!

Disliked: We disliked nothing! I would turn up with food and think ahead as it is 20 mins to substantial groceries in Narberth or Haverfordwest.

Local attractions

What to sniff out first? A hike through the Preseli Hills (15 minutes’ drive) to see the Castell Henllys Iron Age Village (25 minutes) or the National Trust’s Cilgerran Castle (35 minutes)? Perhaps the coast might be the first to call your attention. If so, the sandy stretch at Newgale beach (half an hour) is fit for surfing and kitesurfing. There are pastel-coloured Georgian houses in the harbour at Tenby (40 minutes), the dunes and church at Broad Haven beach (half an hour), the dragonflies at Lilly Ponds (50 minutes) or a splendid bay along the coastal path at Barafundle Bay Beach (50 minutes). Up north, Cardigan (half an hour) and Newport (25 minutes) have more compact beaches. And to the west, history fans will want to scout out St Davids (40 minutes) for its cathedral… or perhaps Pembrokeshire’s castles, such as Pembroke Castle (40 minutes) and Carew Castle and Tidal Mill (half an hour). Narberth (20 minutes) has all the scents of a market town… browse cheeses, meats and wines, sample artisan ice cream or sip on gin and craft ales. There are independent shops selling antiques, jewellery and homeware if you fancy a shopping spree.
