  • No-frills wild camping fields and woodland at Hook in Pembrokeshire
  • A 25-minute drive to Newgale Beach; half an hour to Oakwood Theme Park
  • Off-grid site 10 minutes’ walk to the Cleddau Estuary and shops
Here’s a corner of lovely Pembrokeshire countryside all set up for laid-back, wild-camping adventures. Set in the ‘Black Diamond’ village of Hook (one of the last mining villages in Wales) on the Cleddau River Estuary, 7 Acres Camping near Haverfordwest offers masses of space and pitches you can pick yourself to be as sociable or unsociable as you please. There’s lots of room for kids to run around in safety on the fields – you can bring any canine pals to join in the fun – and a public footpath direct from the camping fields leads through woodland and down to the banks of the Cleddau. You can get a barbecue going by your pitch, and if you run out of essentials, it’s 10 minutes’ walk to the shop in Hook. If you’re in need of a change of scenery, visit the village sports club where you’re welcome to join in events and activities. Please note there is no electricity at this no-frills site so you’ll need to bring torches and batteries with you.

Non-electric grass motorhome pitch

Liked: Easy to find. Nearby houses so felt safe but also far enough away to feel like I was in the sticks. Plenty of level spots in the field and the grass had been recently topped. I had the field to myself for a couple of nights so really peaceful. The village is a fairly central place to explore from and only around 10 minute drive to a large supermarket if you need it. There is a small local shop for essentials a short walk away.

Disliked: The porta loo was gross. The flush was stagnant brown smelly water. So smelly I initially thought it was pumping up the waste! Very relieved I took my portapotti.

From the manager: Very sorry about the portaloo. The company that services it stopped trading and it has taken a while to find someone to take over from them. Glad you have accepted my offer of a free trip next time and that you enjoyed your stay otherwise.

Great location, nice flat ground, lovely views. Quiet…

Non-electric grass motorhome pitch

Liked: Nice field, clise to nature, beautiful star lit evening to enjoy, no electric, no people. The owners came to make sure everything was ok, which was so nice of them.

Disliked: Ground a bit uneven. Didnt matter to us as we were in a camper, but might be a bit rough if you were in a tent.

Local attractions

Sporty types can look forward to swimming, boating and fishing on the river Cleddau, and joining the Pembrokeshire Coast Path (20 minutes’ drive) for soaring clifftop ambles. Adventurous souls can surf off Newgale Beach (25 minutes) and you can try your hand at guided coasteering adventures along the coast near Abercastle (40 minutes). If the weather is behaving, take time to visit Pembrokeshire beaches like Little Haven or Sandy Haven (both 25 minutes) for swimming and rock pooling; or try the sandy expanse at Marloes Sands (40 minutes) backed by steep cliffs. Other ideas for family days out include fairground rides, big cats and cuddly ponies at Folly Farm Adventure Park and Zoo, or a visit to Oakwood Theme Park (both half an hour) for Neverland-themed attractions and hard-core water rides on Blue Lagoon. Budding historians might like to head to St Davids, the smallest city in Wales, to tour the 12th-century cathedral (have a look at the ornate roof above the altar), and then put their feet up in a cosy café for tea and cakes.
