  • Luxury adults-only shepherd’s huts on a 10-acre wildlife haven
  • Within walking distance of Dinefwr Castle, Newton House and Llandeilo
  • Each hut has a private herb garden, hammock, open fire and benches
The 10-acre grounds at Ravenscroft Retreats have spectacular views of lush green fields, woods and Dinefwr Castle. Deer, foxes, badgers, bats, frogs, toads, kites, bats and newts can be spotted on the gorgeous green grounds. They are peaceful, private and relaxing. The luxury units each have their own herb garden and a private area within the field with an open fire area, a hammock and benches. Each shepherd's hut is equipped with a TV, Egyptian cotton bedding, a DVD player and games. With wildlife all around, guests are very welcome to explore the land. The site's communal spaces consist of another open fire, a hammock, games and a barbecue. While it is an adults-only site, family group bookings can be made. A nearby public footpath cuts over the hill, forming a half-mile route to Dinefwr Castle and Newton House, a National Trust Site on a hilltop over the Tywi Valley and its river. Another half a mile (a 15-minute walk, to be exact) onwards from Dinefwr Castle and guests will reach Llandeilo’s shops, cafés, restaurants and art galleries. There's also a pub 20 minutes’ walk away from the shepherd’s huts. There’s a great road system around these parts too. Welsh beaches can be reached with a 40-minute drive - the nearest beach is Llansteffan Beach. The edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park is just 20 minutes’ drive away too.

Swallows shepherd's hut

Liked: This was a delightful place to stay and the host was very accommodating. I can imagine this would be a fantastic place to stay with friends if you had the whole site to yourselves. We'll definitely be back to this lovely, cosy retreat.

Red Kite shepherd's hut

Liked: Ravenscroft was a lovely little glamping site nestled away in the valleys. The hut was beautifully laid out and the site was fantastic. The host was extremely thoughtful and we were even able to bring our little pup. The only criticism would be a coat hook is needed in the hut and it would have been a lovely touch if some shampoo and body wash sachets were provided but this is minor. The place was fantastic.

Red Kite shepherd's hut

Liked: Staying at Ravenscroft was idyllic. When we arrived we were met by Chris, who had already got the wood fired hot tub going for us (legend). A lovely host, he was really informative about the local area and was attentive and easy to contact throughout the weekend. The space itself is beautiful, really gorgeous decor and the perfect little space for a couples weekend away. It has a selection of dvds, books and games to use and all the utensils you'd need. We didn't get a chance to use the hammock (Welsh weather) but would have if it had been hot. There was a larger fire area we could have used as well, but we didnt during our stay. The views are stunning from the property, LLandeilo is only an hour walk away through the gorgeous Newton Estate, which has a deer park and some lovely cows to look at! It's also well located to drive to places locally, including a roman gold mine, the Brecon Beacons and the national botanical garden of Wales. Local shops are also within a short drive from the spot. The bed was the comfiest one we've ever stayed in, with the added touch of a stained glass window above the bed - it felt like we were in a movie. Come rain nor shine this place provides, we had the best time and will definitely be back again. Highly recommend for a relaxed, quiet weekend away with lots of outdoor options. Thanks again Chris!!

Liked: Fabulous rural and secluded accommodation with great views out over the countryside. Very helpful and attentive host who had great knowledge of the local area. The accommodation was of a very high standard, with everything you would need. A great place to get away and switch off.

Red Kite shepherd's hut

Liked: What a beautiful hut. Amazing decor, comfy bed. The hot tub was an added bonus. The peacefulness, the views and the seclusion of this place make it somewhere special to chill, relax and just enjoy glam ping at its best. The fire pit and hammock add to the experience. The host was fabulous and so Attentive. Can’t recommend this place enough. Best Shepards hut we have ever stayed in. We didn’t get to use the log burner or had the need for the underfloor heating as we were lucky with the weather. But in the colder months this would very welcomed and so cosy and warm. We will definitely be back- whatever the weather! No wifi but we both had perfect signal and we’re able to hotspot off our phone to laptop with ease.

Local attractions

Castles, a national park, gorgeous country walks… and don’t count out beaches either. Pembrokeshire beaches such as Tenby (55 minutes’ drive) are a possibility for beach days: Tenby is a gorgeous walled seaside town with the aptly-named Castle Beach and a ruined castle overlooking the harbour. If you’re after wilder sorts of beaches (as well as shipwrecks, tidal islands and natural swimming holes), the Gower (55 minutes) should also be a top choice. Something a little different is always a good idea, so perhaps try visiting the The Red Kite Feeding Station (25 minutes) in the Brecon Beacons or visiting the only known Roman gold mines in the UK, the Dolaucothi Gold Mines (25 minutes). For flowers of all colours (and plenty of pretty pictures, to be sure), set off for the National Botanic Garden of Wales (20 minutes) or the Aberglasney Gardens (five minutes). Carmarthen (25 minutes) on the river Twyi will add some urban entertainment into the mix.
