Llansawel Agored: A star trail

General

  • Scenic and spacious off-grid family-friendly site in Carmarthenshire
  • A 25-minute drive to the Brecon Beacons and Dinefwr Castle
  • Free wood for firepits; activities such as watersports run by the site

Countryside scenery and outdoor activities galore… that’s the case at Llansawel Agored, a scenic and spacious family-friendly site in the Carmarthenshire countryside. At this 20-acre area without a road in sight and red kites often passing overhead, it’s just as easy to get down to relaxation as it is to get stuck into activities run by the site.

With the river Cothi nearby and the Twyi and Teifi, Usk Reservoir and Brecon canal within driving distance, it’s no surprise that some of these are on the water. Canoeing and paddleboarding are both on the go… and on the land side, there are bushcraft, yoga and mindfulness activities to book onto (you should hopefully feel rather zen after all of that).

Clear night skies are a regular occurrence here too, so you might fancy indulging in a spot of stargazing at night. There’s free firewood available for those of you wanting to get a properly ambient evening on the go with a firepit, and the pitches are well spaced out, so you’ll have a fair bit of privacy for it.

In terms of facilities, there’s a composting toilet on site, as well as water to help yourself to. And when you’re ready to potter on down to a pub, you’ll be in luck, as there’s just the spot down the road (a 15-minute walk away to be exact). The nearest shop is a little further, at around 15 minutes' drive away.

This was our first experience of glamping and it was pretty special. The view from the tent is beautiful and was lovely to sit round the fire pit and watch the stars and the moon. The tent itself was huge and had comfy mattresses for us all. The hanging rail was useful too. The log burner in the tent was great and took off the edge in the evenings before you headed to bed!
The kitchen was very well equipped. We were provided with gas and Rhys brought us water whenever we were running low. The cool box provided was really useful too as were the fresh ice blocks that Rhys dropped in to us each evening.
The shower is a bucket you fill up and then an electric pump with a shower attachment on it. It was actually a pretty good shower and my five year old found it hilarious.
Some of the days out we did included a walk in Abergerloch forest, the botanical gardens of Wales (loved it here, so much to do), carreg cennen castle (nice, but a bit overpriced). We also took a drive over to Aberporth beach and walked along the coastal path to Tresaith which has a beautiful waterfall coming down into the beach. It was about a 45/50 minute drive so not too bad.
Would definitely recommend if you want something a bit different, somewhere quiet, if you don't mind being in the middle of nowhere and you want a feeling of adventure! My five year and one year old loved it.

Rhys blew us away! The care and thoughtfulness that went in to making sure our stay was the most comfortable stay possible. keeping our fridge facility cold each day by bringing fresh ice packs up in the morning for the cool box, which may i say had some goodies tucked inside which was so kind and very sweet.(SMORES!) the place was immaculate with everything you could possibly need for the PERFECT wild camping experience. The pub which is 12mins walk away was so cosy and serving the most tasty home cooked food. rhys made us feel so welcome and was always available if needed. this is wild camping in style and we cant wait to come back and see you again rhys.

Rhys was a great host. Could not do enough for us when we arrived and also messaged via text each evening/morning to check if we needed anything and to see if we were comfortable.
This site is very clean, well maintained and all the equipment supplied was perfect.
The bell tent was spotless and the solid fuel burner inside was amazing on the chilly nights.
A huge outdoor kitchen area with plenty of seating and space, all utensils were supplied and very clean. USB charging for phones and tablets was a nice touch. The solar bank had enough charge daily to run all the equipment whenever we wanted it! Rhys even catered for roasting marshmallows and these were provided. A nice touch
Stunning views and a lovely village. Thanks for a perfect weekend, we will be back!!
    Thanks Again, the Ainsworth Family

Local attractions

While there are certainly plenty of activities in full flow on the site, those of you who are still looking to get your full fill of the outdoors will have a few more places to go. To begin with, there’s mountain biking in Brechfa on the Raven MTB Trail (15 minutes’ drive).

Then for sports of the wetter kind, the Llandysul Paddlers Canoe Centre (25 minutes) runs kayaking, canoeing and whitewater rafting. Those of you who'd rather have a beach as the backdrop should find New Quay (45 minutes) is a good call… and there are plenty of fish and chip shops for afters.

Hikes in the Brecon Beacons National Park (25 minutes) and gentler strolls around the National Botanic Garden of Wales (35 minutes) may well round off your outdoorsy adventures, but historical sites could come into play too.

First of all, there’s the only known Roman mine in all of the UK almost down the road at the National Trust’s Dolaucothi Gold Mines (10 minutes). After that, castle ruins might give you a good play-through of the history books around here, as the National Trust’s Dinefwr Castle (25 minutes) and the 13th-century Carreg Cennen Castle (half an hour) are also a short drive away.
