  • Lakeside wild camping pitches with far-reaching Carmarthenshire views
  • Talley Abbey a 10-minute walk; Mandala Yoga Ashram a 10-minute drive
  • Dark skies, stone circles, a lake and rewilded meadow walks on site
Right at the top of a valley in the Welsh uplands near Llandeilo, Cefn Blaidd Wild Camping is a peaceful spot to wild camp on the edge of the Cambrian Mountains Dark Sky Reserve. Here you’ll be close to stone circles, lakes and meadows, with the chance to wander 420 acres of private land in peace – get your explorations off to a speedy start with a self-guided tour of the rewilded landscape. Just ask the owners for more information when you get there. When the sky is clear, watch the sun rise over the Brecon Beacons to the east, and see it set again over the Cothi Valley in the west. After dark, curl up under the stars and listen to the sounds of nature – you can order firewood from the site owners to build a campfire so you stay cosy watching the Milky Way twinkle up above. To ensure that your stargazing experience is the best, there is no lighting at night, so pack headlamps and torches. Weather permitting, you can get your car to the wild pitches across grass fields. If it’s too muddy, you have a five-minute, uphill walk to the tents – borrow a wheelbarrow to transport your gear – but the climb is so worth it for the spectacular hill views. A few important points: this is wild camping on a hilltop, so pack warm, waterproof clothing. The site is not suitable for kids, and no dogs are allowed due to the amount of wildlife around.

Local attractions

If you’re up for exploring the area on foot, follow the footpath from your pitch to the village of Talley (10 minutes’ stroll), with its stately abbey ruins. There’s a pop-up market on Sunday, where you can replenish your supplies with baked goods from a local goat farmer, organic fruit and vegetables, and local eggs. If you’re keen to get out into nature, set out from Llanddeusant (35 minutes’ drive) and hike to Llyn y Fan Fach (90 minutes’ walk) for a wild-swimming session. You can also discover dramatic waterfalls on hikes in remote woodland on the Cwm Rhaeadr MTB Trail (30 minutes’ drive), while at Tresaith beach (an hour), there’s a towering cliffside cascade tumbling into the Irish Sea. For a bit of history – and mystery – there are ancient stone circles right on the site (ask the owners how to find them), and neolithic megaliths and cairns at Garn Goch Y Gaer Fawr (half an hour). You can explore hilltop remains of medieval castles at Dinefwr (15 minutes) and Carreg Cennen (25 minutes), and if you feel the need for more inner peace, practice your downward dog at the Mandala Yoga Ashram (10 minutes).
