  • Spacious pitches on a farm five minutes' drive from Whitland
  • Sandy Telpyn Beach 15 minutes’ drive; Tenby 25 minutes
  • Private showers and eco-friendly bathroom pods
Situated on Pen Back Farm, in the splendid Carmarthenshire countryside of south-west Wales, family- and dog-friendly Cowpots Camping spreads over three large fields. The biggest of these, anchored by a Welsh oak tree, measures about 11 acres. If you struggle to picture it, it’s roughly the size of the roof that covers Wembley Stadium – not too shabby, right? Separated from each other by long grass and willow trees for privacy, all pitches have their own individual eco-friendly bathroom pods, which include a composting loo and a private off-grid shower with plenty of hot water – a welcome luxury after a day spent hiking in these hills, perhaps looking for foxes, rabbits and birds like red kites and buzzards. Speaking of birds, if you fancy waking up to a dawn chorus of blue tits, magpies, robins and finches, you’ve come to the right place. Alternatively, you can spend a day at the beach: sandy Telpyn (15 minutes’ drive), sheltered at its eastern end by a headland with smooth rocks, is a popular sunbathing spot. The beach also welcomes dogs all year round, so your four-legged buddy can join you as you brave the cool waters. Back at the site, each pitch also comes with its own water supply, washing-up area, picnic bench and stone firepit. Barbecues are allowed on site, and guests can purchase wood and firelighters at the on-site pizzeria, The Cowshed, which serves delicious homemade pizzas and award-winning ice creams. The closest town is Whitland (about a five-minute drive away), which has convenience stores, restaurants and pubs. The site also has the Wild Wellbeing Spa, where guests can purchase an outdoor spa experience to access the relaxing outdoor sauna and hot tub, the cold plunge pool and a calming outdoor space (note it's also open to the public and for exclusive hire).

Top Track non-electric hardstanding and grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch (private bathroom amenities)

Liked: This place is absolutely beautiful. We stayed in top track, campervan/tent pitch, the pitch size is enormous. So much room for the children to play. The private compost loo and shower facilities are brilliant, without this amenity we would not have been able to camp, as my grandson is autistic and will not use public toilets. The shower was so good, my 6 year old granddaughter had two, in one overnight stay! The pitch also had a firepit, table and benches, and washing up area - all fab! On site is a pizzeria and ice cream parlour, which the kids loved, beautiful walks, and scenery. This place is magical, offering a very special experience. If you want a peaceful, beautiful place to unwind, this is it. Can't recommend enough.

Local attractions

For a family day out, head to Folly Farm Adventure Park and Zoo (15 minutes' drive). Adults might get all nostalgic at the vintage rides, including dodgems, waltzers and a big wheel with colourful carriages; meanwhile, the kids can make friends with barnyard animals or blow off some steam in the large adventure play area. A walk among the wildflower meadows and blossoming rhododendrons at National Trust - Colby Woodland Garden (15 minutes) might yield more than gardening ideas, with traces of the local mining heritage still visible around the grounds. And if vintage wheels and old tramway tracks don’t do it for you, check out the view across Carmarthen Bay. It’s easy to spend a few hours in the coastal town of Tenby (25 minutes), with the ruins of a medieval castle, a sandy beach and a quaint harbour lined with pastel-coloured houses. Tenby is also the departure point for boat trips to monastic Caldey Island, where you can visit a chocolate maker and look out for resident seals.
