  • Wild camping on a 1400-acre family farm in the Cambrian Mountains
  • Dolaucothi Gold Mines and Llyn Brianne 20 minutes' drive away
  • Off-grid nature haven 13 miles from the nearest town of Llandovery
In the market for a proper rural escape? Somewhere you can truly switch off and get back to nature? The splendidly secluded pitches of Nantyrast Wild Camping, in the Carmarthenshire countryside, should fit the bill… This site on a family-run farm could certainly be described as ‘remote’ – it’s 13 miles from the nearest town, Llandovery. Check it out on a map and you’ll see green all around: that’s the gorgeous scenery of the Cambrian Mountains, and it means you’ll be properly surrounded by views of wildlife and grazing sheep. And there’s plenty of space from which to enjoy all that scenery too – the farm stretches out over a huge 1400 acres, and you’ll be able to take a wander around to decide which pitch you’d like upon arrival. It’s called wild camping as it’s very light on facilities, but you will have access to a toilet and running water from the farm’s well. There are three village pubs within a short drive if you fancy a night out. As you’d probably imagine, there are lots of great walks to take around here, from waterside wanders at Llyn Brianne reservoir to more challenging uphill climbs in the mountains. RSPB Gwenffrwd-dinas (20 minutes’ drive) is the place to go if you’re keen to see what sort of birdlife west Wales has to offer.

Local attractions

This area is all about the outdoor activities, so come along armed with boots, bikes and binoculars. Start by giving the boots a workout with walks around lovely Llyn Brianne reservoir (20 minutes’ drive) or along the quiet paths of Crychan Forest (40 minutes). There are bike trails at the latter as well, or you could pedal along the mountain bike trail at Cwm Rhaeadr (20 minutes). The binoculars? Well, you’ll need those for a trip to Gwenffrwd-dinas RSPB reserve (20 minutes), where you may spot the likes of wagtails and sandpipers or catch glimpses of red kites. For a greater chance of seeing the birds up close, stop by at the Red Kite Feeding Station in Llandeusant (45 minutes). For other days out nearby, try a tour of Dolaucothi Gold Mines (20 minutes), head out horse riding with Saddle Tramps Trail Riding (45 minutes) or explore the buildings of the past on outings to Llandovery Castle (half an hour) and Dinefwr Castle (45 minutes).
