Nantyrast Wild Camping: Pitches

General

  • Wild camping on a 1400-acre family farm in the Cambrian Mountains
  • Dolaucothi Gold Mines and Llyn Brianne 20 minutes' drive away
  • Off-grid nature haven 13 miles from the nearest town of Llandovery

In the market for a proper rural escape? Somewhere you can truly switch off and get back to nature? The splendidly secluded pitches of Nantyrast Wild Camping, in the Carmarthenshire countryside, should fit the bill…

This site on a family-run farm could certainly be described as ‘remote’ – it’s 13 miles from the nearest town, Llandovery. Check it out on a map and you’ll see green all around: that’s the gorgeous scenery of the Cambrian Mountains, and it means you’ll be properly surrounded by views of wildlife and grazing sheep.

And there’s plenty of space from which to enjoy all that scenery too – the farm stretches out over a huge 1400 acres, and you’ll be able to take a wander around to decide which pitch you’d like upon arrival. It’s called wild camping as it’s very light on facilities, but you will have access to a toilet and running water from the farm’s well. There are three village pubs within a short drive if you fancy a night out.

As you’d probably imagine, there are lots of great walks to take around here, from waterside wanders at Llyn Brianne reservoir to more challenging uphill climbs in the mountains. RSPB Gwenffrwd-dinas (20 minutes’ drive) is the place to go if you’re keen to see what sort of birdlife west Wales has to offer.

Please note

Please note that the toilet/shower facilities are unisex.

We usually wild camp but now with a toddler it isn't always viable, this campsite is in a perfectly 'wild' location, only sheep, horses and birds to be heard! The camping field is HUGE, so plenty of room to spread out. Its nice and flat and sunny. Portaloo was the cleanest I've ever seen and a welcome addition to wild camping 😉

What a location! Really is out in the sticks and just a beautiful setting away from it all. The family were out when we arrived but I knew this from communication, so I just picked a spot to camp which was nice to have such a choice. On meeting them they were so welcoming, generous & friendly, we will definitely be back in the future. Loved the fact they were so relaxed.
We visited the RSPB Gwenffrwd-dinas nature reserve & Dam, not too far from the campsite, would highly recommend. Just love Carmarthenshire ❤️

    Disliked:

Farm dogs did bark a lot (but it’s a working farm, so to be expected.)
No phone signal which I didn’t mind but just to make people aware- come prepared!
The track in & out is off road I’d say, very glad to be in a vehicle that could manage easily, however people were arriving in cars so it is doable.
Would have preferred compost toilets but it’s still a newish venture for the family and we are excited to come and stay again!

Great holiday thank you to you and your lovely family. Peaceful location, lots to explore, cold water tap and portaloo was all we needed for our trip. The track is adventurous but with some fun driving was manageable, added to the fun of the holiday and you don’t get a location like this without a bit of a trek. We will definitely be back.

Gorgeous countryside views & warm welcome. You cannot fault the surroundings, blissfully rugged and wild.
Our hosts were lovely and friendly.
The track down to the farm is not for the faint hearted, but we'll worth it. Don't expect luxury here, but do expect the peace and glory of the hills surroundings.
