  • Family-run working farm site in the Carmarthenshire countryside
  • A 10-minute drive from Carmarthen and half an hour from Pendine Sands
  • Firepits around the site; food shop selling locally-sourced produce
Raring to go for a rural retreat in the Carmarthenshire countryside? The family-run working farm at Red Valley Campsite has 156 acres of the countryside ready for some quality time… with grassy fields and woodlands (fit for hanging a hammock) around the site and lots of character from its railway crossing, private road and two ancient Welsh oak trees, this site is a nice spot to unwind. Park up the car or four wheel drive in the field or woodland parking areas and remind the kids to throw a thumbs up to the farmer and his helper whenever they pass by on the tractor. Happily, there are pigs, ducks and chickens around the site that they can greet too. It’s a short stroll to the top of the farm, so if you’ve already purchased some locally-sourced food and the farm’s own pork produce from the small on-site food shop, lay down a picnic blanket and take in the views. The shop also sells kiln-dried logs for the firepits around the site. If you’re on the prowl for places to eat out, Camarthen is 10 minutes’ drive away. Handily, there’s also a cycling path at the entrance to the farm that links up to the A40, so either drive or pedal to beaches such as Pendine Sands (half an hour’s drive) or Saundersfoot Beach (35 minutes for fishing trips) or Tenby (40 minutes). As for the other facilities on site, there are composting toilets, showers, a dishwashing area, recycling and fresh water. Bring along a maximum of three pets too, if you have any furry family members.

Local attractions

Folly Farm Adventure Park and Zoo (half an hour's drive) has a sloth forest, barns and a fairground, but if you like a bigger thrill out of your rides, Oakwood Theme Park (35 minutes) is suited to the bigger daredevils in the party. Treetop ropes courses, escape rooms and go-karting… Heatherton World of Activities (35 minutes) has all three. Feeling like you’d rather have a go on a slippery set of waterslides? There's Blue Lagoon Water Park (35 minutes) too. What about fishing fans? Well, there are fishing trips (and wildlife excursions too) around the coast or fly fishing and coarse fishing at lakes nearby, like the Llyn Carfan Coarse Fishing Lakes (half an hour). Don’t be fooled into thinking you’ve stepped back into the past… with the Gwili Steam Railway (15 minutes) and castles such as Laugharne Castle (15 minutes) and Narberth Castle (half an hour) around, history isn’t too far away. If birds get you excited, perhaps add The British Bird of Prey Centre (half an hour) and The Red Kite Feeding Station (55 minutes) to your itinerary.
