  • Small quiet site with yurts, alpacas and rare-breed farm animals
  • Brechfa Forest within 15 mins’ drive; 10-min walk to Brechfa village
  • Units come with beds, camp cookers, logburning stoves and herb gardens
Seeking somewhere small and serene to stay in the Cothi valley…? You’ve found just the place: family-run Brechfa Glamping, a 10-minute walk from the village of Brechfa and its pubs and play park. This sweet site’s made up of a group of Mongolian yurts built locally in Carmarthenshire, with stunning views out over Brechfa Forest just past the alpacas grazing nearby. Each of the yurts is decorated with fleece blankets and cushions – woven from the wool of those very same alpacas – and is furnished with a woodburning stove, a comfy bed and ample storage. The clear crown skylight at the top of the unit gives you the chance to stargaze at night after days out plying the walking and mountain trails of Brechfa Forest (15 minutes’ drive away). Outside each yurt is a herb garden for pepping up meals made on the provided camp cooker, and a private firepit is next to the accommodation for whipping up alfresco culinary creations. Ingredients can be sourced in Brechfa at a community shop stocking local and organic produce; if you’re around on the first Saturday of the month, also visit the market in the village to pick up bacon baps, homemade cakes and local crafts. While you man the blaze, keep an eye out for the wildlife that often visits the smallholding, ranging from swallows and buzzards to the grey heron down by the River Pib at the bottom of the glamping field. To guarantee a glimpse of rare winged creatures ask on site to see the rare-breed poultry (their eggs are available to buy in laying season) or drive to The British Bird of Prey Centre 20 minutes down the road. For those bringing their own cycling equipment as well as a car, the facilities building has a bike-lock area. Other amenities on site include hot showers, flushing toilets and a washing-up area with a microwave, fridge and kettle. There are also two waterless toilets nearer the yurts.

Local attractions

Welsh market towns Carmarthen and Llandeilo are a 20- and 25-minute drive respectively from the park if you fancy some urban forays; for underground explores instead, the National Trust’s Roman-era Dolaucothi Gold Mines are around the same distance. Come back up to surface level for trips to Dinefwr Castle, half an hour away – one of 600 castles across the country – or peruse the plants at the National Botanic Garden of Wales (20 minutes). Pembrey Country Park (45 minutes) is worth the trip for its golden beach, dry ski slope, crazy golf and adventure play area as well as tons of nature trails in its acres of woods.
