Local attractions

Close to plenty of National Trust land, you won’t be stuck for things to see and do right on your doorstep when staying at Hangmans Hall. To the south you’ll find the pretty town of Stackpole, famous for the Stackpole Estate and Stackpole Quay. Wildlife in and around the lily ponds provide so much to see like otters, herons, wintering wildfowl and more than 20 species of dragonfly. The Quay’s limestone cliffs offer a great perch for breeding seabirds – ideal for keeping the kids occupied, intrepid little explorers will love spotting the animals, birds and insects around them. Holiday like a film star... well, almost.Take a trip to Freshwater West, just a 15-minute drive away, to see where Harry Potter and Robin Hood filming took place. The sea views here are spectacular and the big beach is a top spot for unbathing, rockpooling, kite flying, surfing and other watersports (be careful not to swim here, as the currents are too strong). Two miles north of Hangmans Hall you’ll reach Pembroke and its Norman castle, standing tall on a rocky ridge overlooking the town and surrounded by three sides of water. Not just for history buffs, from the top of the keep you can capture some incredible views, including Pembroke’s historic town wall. Back down below, stroll among the Tudor and Georgian houses, cafés, restaurants, pubs and shops lining Main Street, which runs the length of the old town, or take a walk along Mill Pond to spot kingfishers and otters as you saunter to the remains of Monkton’s Benedictine Priory. Want to take to greater heights? Bosherston is a tiny village just south of Pembroke but it provides a real hub for the local climbing scene. Challenge yourself to some of the toughest climbing routes in the country, including Huntsman’s Leap, but beware, these limestone cliffs are not for the faint-hearted. Take to the beaches for kayaking, sailing, windsurfing and even scuba diving opportunities: top surfing beaches include Newport, Broad Haven and Tenby South. Bikes and surfboards can be taken on some bus services too, so you’ll be able to get to and from the waves hassle-free.
