General

  • Close to award-winning Pembrokeshire beaches
  • Near the ferry port for Ireland at Rosslare
  • Wildlife haven with plenty of space

You might be all of a dither about deciding days out when staying at decidedly relaxed Tregroes Touring and Camping Site on the north Pembrokeshire coast. Its closest sandy beach is a mile and a half away, and, as this is Pembrokeshire, a few weeks’ worth of award-winning sands are a pushover to get to from a Tregroes base.

Eats, shops and sightseeing are sorted at the old coastal town of Fishguard (and the local pub), within a 20-minute walk. And, although the site is set in quiet countryside, it’s close enough to the A40 that it’s decidedly simple to get to an abundant amount of north Wales attractions and activities – graceful St Davids, for example, is less than half an hour’s drive away.

Or you might pick to simply ditch the car and catch a bus or train from Fishguard – and speaking of the old coastal town of Fishguard, Fishguard Harbour is where the Irish ferry departs for Rosslare – a week in Ireland either side of a Pembrokeshire holiday might sound decidedly Tre-mendous too.

Or... you might just decide to stay on base, close to the spectacular scenery and wildlife-rich countryside of the Pembrokeshire coast and countryside, and lazing about on an extensively-sized pitch picked right where you please. The kids could run around expending energy in the ample space on site while you kick back under an awning with an aperitif watching the splendid Pembrokeshire sunset.

We had a lovely time at Tregroes and the hosts made us feel really welcome. The second night we were there we had rain but the field did not flood and dried really quickly. The facilities are clean and the showers are hot so no complaints from us at all and would recommend it to anyone wishing to explore the Pembrokeshire coast.

    Disliked:

From the manager...

Thanks for your kind review, sorry about the rain :) See you again hopefully.

Owners are very friendly and helpful .
    Within walking distance to Fishguard.

    Disliked:

No hard standings or designated pitching.
In fairness, the Owners have no long taken over and are visibly working hard on this site . A work in progress .

From the manager...

Thanks for taking the time to review our site, it was lovely to have you stay with us. We aim to develop the site more during the off season, although we are hoping to keep the peaceful atmosphere. Please call and see us again sometime.

The new owners of this site made us very welcome, and checked on us daily
to see if everything was okay, which it was. Very pleasant to have the friendly banter. They gave us local information which was very handy.
It is only a short walk into town and plenty of cycle paths.
When we stayed the site was quiet so plenty of choice for our pitch.
We used the site as an ideal base to tour round the local area.
Shower and toilet facilities were very clean and tidy.

Friendly helpful campsite owners. Rescued me one afternoon when I stupidly left my car lights on. Owners have only just taken over and improvements are happening all the time. Excellent value for money and very quiet.

    Disliked:

No reception area... but wasn't a problem as just phoned them when arrived. Facilities are clean and basic but improving.

From the manager...

Lovely to meet you guys and thanks for staying with us. Glad I could help with the car. Renovations should be finished next time you come along. See you then.

The new owners welcomed us with open arms and also came round daily to see if we needed anything. Toilet and showers were very clean and hot water. (Previous campsite showers were freezing). Swings for children to play on. Bottom field is better as less wind. Will be using this site again.

The owners. They are amazing. I took a punt with all the previous negative reviews but had heard the new owners had taken over and were doing good things. With that 2 x pitches with electric hook ups bought for 2 x nights.

Arrived. We're shown our pitches and we're greeted with a smile. Ablutions pointed out and we were left to it.

The ground even though it had been raining prior to arrival was wet the next day it was dry all day and the whole place was one dry which was amazing! No muddy awning winner.

Views are great, on the door step of Fishguard and Goodwick mega conventient for the ferry.

Showers and toilet block were very clean and always stocked.

So much so we all extended for an extra night.

    We will be back.

    Disliked:

    Very very minor point.

Some showers didn't have a water curtain so some splashes get to your clothes. My only fault I found which is hardly a dislike :-)

From the manager...

Thank you for your comments, we're so glad that you enjoyed your stay. There's a great photo of you guys on our Facebook page. Looking forward to seeing you next year. Shower curtain is done now too :)

Local attractions

Fishguard first if travelling by feets rather than by car: like pretty much all the towns of the Pembrokeshire coast, Fishguard’s a beaut. It’s made up mainly of the old harbour of Lower Town and the town itself set on the clifftop with a fine and dandy selection of shops, restaurants, delis and pubs, a local leisure centre with pool is in town if you fancy an indoor dip, and the town theatre if you fancy films or live events.

Round and about, hire a kayak from a local operator or activity centre and take off a-paddling around Fishguard Bay – as it might be tricky manipulating a camera as well as a paddle, have an additional day sea fishing from Fishguard Harbour for mackerel, dogfish, pollock and whiting and taking splendid shots of your whopping catches as you go.

Fishguard, its surrounds and other Pembrokeshire havens like Newport Bay are among the best in the country to see wildlife, particularly of the watery sort including dolphins, seals, porpoises and seabirds and – if you’re very lucky and hold your camera very still, possibly a minke whale.

Several operators offer wildlife boat safaris around these parts, St Davids Peninsula and the wildlife havens of Skomer Island and Ramsey Island and around the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park to see sealife, seabirds and inland critters, and plenty more are on hand for active days out coasteering, cycling, sailing, horse riding, surfing, caving and climbing.

On land, access the 186 miles of the Pembrokeshire Coast Path from Fishguard for a 12-mile up and down hike to Newport and then, if you so fancy, the 14 miles to the end of the trail at St Dogmaels. (If you don’t fancy, catch the coastal bus instead.)

And then have a decided delve into Welsh history – the historic buildings of the villages around Tregroes Touring and Camping Site are a simple place to start, as are coastal towns like St Dogmaels with its twelfth century abbey and the Pen-Rhiw burial chambers at Goodwick just along the shore.

Apart from Powys, Pembrokeshire has more Scheduled Ancient Monuments including ancient forts, stone circles and Bronze Age roads than anywhere else in Wales: start off at the Garn Wen burial chamber in Fishguard, then have a historic day or two among the stone circles of the Preseli Hills, the cathedral at St Davids and the long-ago cairns of Carningli Mountain.
