General

  • Close to award-winning Pembrokeshire beaches
  • Near the ferry port for Ireland at Rosslare
  • Wildlife haven with plenty of space

You might be all of a dither about deciding days out when staying at decidedly relaxed Tregroes Touring and Camping Site on the north Pembrokeshire coast. Its closest sandy beach is a mile and a half away, and, as this is Pembrokeshire, a few weeks’ worth of award-winning sands are a pushover to get to from a Tregroes base.

Eats, shops and sightseeing are sorted at the old coastal town of Fishguard (and the local pub), within a 20-minute walk. And, although the site is set in quiet countryside, it’s close enough to the A40 that it’s decidedly simple to get to an abundant amount of north Wales attractions and activities – graceful St Davids, for example, is less than half an hour’s drive away.

Or you might pick to simply ditch the car and catch a bus or train from Fishguard – and speaking of the old coastal town of Fishguard, Fishguard Harbour is where the Irish ferry departs for Rosslare – a week in Ireland either side of a Pembrokeshire holiday might sound decidedly Tre-mendous too.

Or... you might just decide to stay on base, close to the spectacular scenery and wildlife-rich countryside of the Pembrokeshire coast and countryside, and lazing about on an extensively-sized pitch picked right where you please. The kids could run around expending energy in the ample space on site while you kick back under an awning with an aperitif watching the splendid Pembrokeshire sunset.

This site has very recently been taken over by new owners. On arrival it did look a little rundown but during our stay a lot of maintenance work was being carried out. In talking to them they clearly have big plans for the site and we wish them well. Please don't write off this site its being transformed. It is situated in a peaceful location just outside Fishguard, and is worth a visit.

ps. Best to book with the owners direct!

DISGUSTING SITE. SHOULD BE TAKEN OFF BEING ADVERTISED AS A TORING SITE. HAVE BEEN TOURING FOR 35 YEARS AND HAVE NEVER BEEN ON SUCH A BAD SITE. BARE WIRES ABOVE YOUR HEAD IN SHOWERS, SWITCHES ON SHOWERS TAPED UP, NO OWNERS ON SITE JUST A BOARD TO SAY ON ARRIVAL RING AND A MOBILE NUMBER. HAD BOOKED FOR 8 NIGHTS BUT ONLY STAYED FOR 3. BOOKED A HARD STANDING PITCH BUT WAS SO OVERGROWN MIGHT AS WELL HAVE NOT BOTHERED. WILL NOT BE USING PITCH UP AGAIN IF THIS IS THE QUALITY OF SITES YOU ADVERTISE.

1 out of 4 showers working, site desperately needs maintenance, facilities very poor for the cost of camping. Electric's not safe!!
Chose nice pitch as site owner not available when we arrived, moved at their request to a less level pitch which lost the evening sun to allow for vans with awnings, but none arrived while we were there!
A real shame, but now we understand why they still had available pitches on a busy bank holiday weekend/ Fishguard folk festival.
Did'nt speak to anyone on site happy to be there, if other campsites had space this one would have been empty.

Local attractions

Fishguard first if travelling by feets rather than by car: like pretty much all the towns of the Pembrokeshire coast, Fishguard’s a beaut. It’s made up mainly of the old harbour of Lower Town and the town itself set on the clifftop with a fine and dandy selection of shops, restaurants, delis and pubs, a local leisure centre with pool is in town if you fancy an indoor dip, and the town theatre if you fancy films or live events.

Round and about, hire a kayak from a local operator or activity centre and take off a-paddling around Fishguard Bay – as it might be tricky manipulating a camera as well as a paddle, have an additional day sea fishing from Fishguard Harbour for mackerel, dogfish, pollock and whiting and taking splendid shots of your whopping catches as you go.

Fishguard, its surrounds and other Pembrokeshire havens like Newport Bay are among the best in the country to see wildlife, particularly of the watery sort including dolphins, seals, porpoises and seabirds and – if you’re very lucky and hold your camera very still, possibly a minke whale.

Several operators offer wildlife boat safaris around these parts, St Davids Peninsula and the wildlife havens of Skomer Island and Ramsey Island and around the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park to see sealife, seabirds and inland critters, and plenty more are on hand for active days out coasteering, cycling, sailing, horse riding, surfing, caving and climbing.

On land, access the 186 miles of the Pembrokeshire Coast Path from Fishguard for a 12-mile up and down hike to Newport and then, if you so fancy, the 14 miles to the end of the trail at St Dogmaels. (If you don’t fancy, catch the coastal bus instead.)

And then have a decided delve into Welsh history – the historic buildings of the villages around Tregroes Touring and Camping Site are a simple place to start, as are coastal towns like St Dogmaels with its twelfth century abbey and the Pen-Rhiw burial chambers at Goodwick just along the shore.

Apart from Powys, Pembrokeshire has more Scheduled Ancient Monuments including ancient forts, stone circles and Bronze Age roads than anywhere else in Wales: start off at the Garn Wen burial chamber in Fishguard, then have a historic day or two among the stone circles of the Preseli Hills, the cathedral at St Davids and the long-ago cairns of Carningli Mountain.
