General

  • Camping meadows edged by hundreds of acres of ancient woodland
  • Eco-friendly site in a wildlife haven
  • Breakfast and weekend stew and barbecue nights available

Batty about wildlife? Wishing for a walk in ancient Welsh woodland amid a wide expanse of sky and pitch-perfect Pembrokeshire views?

Find a top-notch selection of these and more with a retreat to peaceful and friendly Top of the Woods, four pretty meadows edged by the Pembrokeshire National Park and hundreds of acres of woodland.

Top of the Woods is in the grounds of eighteenth century Penrallt Farm and overlooks the Preseli Hills with views of the barrow cemetery and sacred site of Frenni Fawr.

The Teifi Valley is also easily accessible from this peerless Pembrokeshire park, but stick around on site for a while to meet the local inhabitants: Top of the Woods has its own aged woodlands bordered by another 300 acres of wooded and wildflower wilderness, not only topping for all manner of field games, but where you’re also likely to meet birds of prey, badgers, foxes, otters, local and migrant birds, and five of the UK’s 17 protected species of bats which roost here and in the farm buildings.

Owners Soo and John are keen to give guests the greenest and most nature-filled camping hol possible (the site has solar showers, for example), and are passionate about inspiring guests to get into the great outdoors.

But they’ve been careful to add comfort and good food to their overall menu too: for a small extra charge, have breakfast in the Dutch barn picnic area (top quality locally sourced food, natch), or hang around on weekends for stew and barbecue nights around the communal firepit. Just be sure and bring the guitar to warble along to The Carpenters' Top of the World…

Facilities/activities including breakfast are subject to extra charges payable on arrival.

A very friendly, helpful site which is peaceful and has beautiful scenery. We liked the 'no cars by tents rule' and the communal feel. Bell tents are well equipped with cooking and dining necessities and the cooking area has further pots, pans, teapots and so on.
We had a fabulous time and hope to return next year.

Lovely small, family friendly site. It has a number of types of accommodation, bell tents, safari tents, pioneer tents or bring your own. Each field has its own compost toilet and there are toilets and showers in the main courtyard. Jon, Soo and staff are very welcoming and always happy to help. I highly recommend Top of the Woods and we will definitely be going back!

This has got to be the best campsite we have stayed in. Soo & Jon were so lovely and always there to help. The Food & Fire weekend package was perfect as it meant after a long car journey through endless traffic jams on the M4 we arrived just in time for Jon's delicious stew in the barn, enjoyed the delicious breakfasts without any washing up and was stuffed after the Barn-BQ. Loved using the firepit too.
Our 21 month-old loved trying to catch the chickens and on the hay bales. It was nice to be able to let her run around the field without fear of traffic.
Even the loos and showers couldn't be faulted. Brilliant, would definitely go back to this lovely chilled out campsite.

    Disliked:

I think our only dislike was the bumpy road down to the farm. Otherwise couldn't fault it.

From the manager...

Thanks you for your stay karen and i am glad you all had a wonderful time - yes the chicken are very popular and they are very chilled out around the guests ! hope to see you all again soon and thanks for your review and ratings

Everything! From the moment we arrived we felt relaxed and at home. Sue, John and Laura welcomed us with open arms and ensured we wanted for nothing during our stay. The facilities were fantastic and there was plenty to do and see. Lots of wildlife (robins, swallows, bats, owls), lots to explore (secret waterfall, beautiful beaches) and lots of peace and quiet to relax in. My seven year old found lots of friends and had plenty of space to run and play in. The additonal food package was amazing-the food was fantastic and an opportunity to get to know the other guests. After a long day exploring the blankets provided were perfect for sitting around the fire and the beds were super comfortable

    Disliked:

Nothing! My seven year old wasn't a fan of the odd spider in the outside shower, however this was remedied by visiting the spotless shower block! There was nothing to dislike other than the fact we had to leave!

From the manager...

Thanks for your stay and dylan is missing his friend! Thanks for stay and i am glad you all had the chance to unwind and you enjoyed Jons food. I will pass on your thanks to to our lovely Laura & Lisa - Hope to see you all back again soon xxx

Local attractions

Once you’ve goggled at the wealth of wildlife around the Top of the Woods woodlands, more wildlife, award-winning beaches, outdoor activities on land and water, and historic towns (and pubs) all surround the site.

Whether walking, beachcombing or lying on a sandy blanket with a novel of dubious quality, Pembrokeshire’s coastline nearby should be an early port of call for at least a few days’ worth of adventures.

The Pembrokeshire Coast Path, said by the peeps at Lonely Planet to be one of the best long distance trails in the world, runs for 186 miles from Dogmael to Amroth and can be accessed a few miles from Top of the Woods.

Tackle the path in as long or short a stretch as long or short legs wish: the nine miles from nearby Fishguard to Pwll Deri and the 14 miles from Newport to St Dogmaels are two localish treks to tackle; stop off at Cemaes Head on the Newport walk to see seals pup in autumn. (A bus service runs along the full length of the path if you’d rather see things from up on high.)

Or simply hit the sands and surf instead at several spots around the first-class Pembrokeshire coast, take a boat out on a sea fishing trip or dolphin watch around glorious Cardigan Bay via a boat trip from the Cardigan Bay Marine Wildlife Centre.

Poppit Sands, eight miles from Top of the Woods, is increasingly popular with surfers and has always been a good catch for salmon and sea trout from March to October and cod and whiting in winter.

Pop the family on the ‘Poppit Rocket’ bus from the beach to get to the Pembrokeshire fishing towns of Cardigan or Fishguard, both much visited by holidaymakers and with a wealth of things to see and do including farmers’ markets, theatres, festivals and a few more beaut beaches.

Just outside Cardigan on the banks of the River Teifi, the Welsh Wildlife Centre in the Teifi Marsh Nature Reserve is teeming with wetland wildlife like otters and dragonflies, springtime bluebells around its wooded paths and heaps of activities including pond dipping, guided tours and trail maps.

If you prefer something a bit more organised/active the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park should see you sorted with endless energetic options on land and sea including horse-riding, canoeing and kayaking, biking, hiking, coasteering, climbing and sailing.

And if you’re happy taking it easy and getting close to nature, try the park’s wildlife boat trips with trained guides or ask for animal-based info at the national park visitor centre based in Newport.
