General

  • Riverside location in a secluded countryside setting
  • Close to the Wye Valley and the Forest of Dean
  • Well-equipped play area with climbing wall and play deck

Pitch up by a Welsh river in Monmouthshire's clean, friendly and well-maintained Glen Trothy Caravan Park, in a secluded countryside setting near the village of Mitchel Troy about a mile and a half from Monmouth.

Kids will be kept occupied on site at the well-equipped and centrally set play area, with swings, climbing frame, play deck and cabin, ladders, a climbing wall and a sand pit, and grownups are well sorted with the site amenities: Glen Trothy has a launderette, a washing-up room and a toilet and shower block with showers, hand dryers and hairdryers. The facilities are suitable for guests with disabilities.

Propane, butane gas and campingaz are also available, as well as a chemical disposal point.

Lovely small friendly site - just needs a few improvements 15/08/2017

we had a fantastic time on such a friendly little site. The idea of renting a tent was fantastic - all the fun of camping without the stress of putting the tent up or taking it down, more camp sites should offer this service!!!!

    Disliked:

Although the facilities were satisfactory the cleanliness of the toilet and shower block was not always good. And my kids would have liked more to do on the small park provided.

From the manager...

Thank you for the review. We do intend to add to our play area during the closed period in the winter so should be more for them next year. We hope to see you again

Excellent family site with clean facitilies and lovely staff! 11/08/2017

Excellent site, exceptionally clean and tidy. Facilities were first rate and cleaned daily. Showers are clean, hot and well worth the additional fee - for 20p you get 4 mins which was ample for a shower, only needed more when taking my 3 year old in with me. Disabled facilities were excellent and the Staff were lovely and very helpful. Diesel (the dog) wanders around and likes to introduce himself, but he is a lovely fellow and utterly harmless!

The site is well located for the Wye Valley and Monmouth is just a few miles away. The Waitrose is very good or there is a Lidl that was also excellent. Morrisons is in Ross on Wye and had the cheapest fuel.

The main road runs past the site so there is a bit of traffic noise but it wasn't intrusive and after the first night we barely noticed it.

    Disliked:

My only dislike would be the lack of changing room in the showers, it isn't a major issue but would suggest taking only the bare minimum with you.

From the manager...

Thank you very much for the review and I am very pleased to hear that you enjoyed your stay. We look forward to seeing you all again in the future and I'm sure our children will be happy to see yours on site again too!

The site was very clean and well maintained. The owners were down to earth and friendly.

    Disliked:

The shower cubicles were on the small side with nowhere to sit or put your things apart from small hooks and I had to constantly need to swipe the water under the next cubicle as the water didn't drain away. I didn't notice a socket to plug my hairdryer in.

From the manager...

thankyou for the review. The showers have now been altered so that they allow the water to be turned off before the timer runs out, allowing more space to change etc. We look forward to seeing you again in the future.

Local attractions

This is walking land… Monmouthshire has over 1,000 miles of public footpaths to investigate, and walks all over the county including a couple around Glen Trothy's local village of Mitchel Troy, through woods and farmland and with views right across Wales and across the border to Herefordshire.

County town Monmouth, the birthplace of Henry V, is these days a Fair Trade town with many independent shops, regular markets, cafés and restaurants alongside chain shops, the Monmouth Museum and the Savoy Theatre, believed to be the oldest working theatre in Wales.

If you'd rather get a bit more active, the River Wye is around for kayaking and paddleboarding (and fishing for more contemplative times), and golf is available nearby. Too tame? Take a tandem paraglide flight off the Blorenge hill in the Brecon Beacons National Park.

If the weather is a bit drizzly, piles of indoor attractions are around too, like the museums of Abergavenny, Monmouth or Chepstow or a castle visit to Caldicot and its country park, Tretower Court, Goodrich or Raglan.

Must see

  • Caldicot Castle & Country Park (1.6 miles)
  • Raglan Castle (5.1 miles)
  • Goodrich Castle (7.3 miles)

National Trust

  • The Kymin (2.3 miles)
  • Skenfrith Castle (6.6 miles)
