General

  • Riverside location in a secluded countryside setting
  • Close to the Wye Valley and the Forest of Dean
  • Well-equipped play area with climbing wall and play deck

Pitch up by a Welsh river in Monmouthshire's clean, friendly and well-maintained Glen Trothy Caravan Park, in a secluded countryside setting near the village of Mitchel Troy about a mile and a half from Monmouth.

You'll be nicely placed here for traipses around the Wye Valley and the lush Forest of Dean – and as it's Wales, the area as a whole is full of ancient castles and abbeys, spectacular scenery and miles of walking trails.

Kids will be kept occupied on site at the well-equipped and centrally set play area, with swings, climbing frame, play deck and cabin, ladders, a climbing wall and a sand pit, and grownups are well sorted with the site amenities: Glen Trothy has a launderette, a washing-up room and a toilet and shower block with showers, hand dryers and hairdryers. The facilities are suitable for guests with disabilities.

Propane, butane gas and campingaz are also available, as well as a chemical disposal point.

Great site, especially for a newbie to the world of caravanning. I was naturally anxious about taking my 8m van to my first site but Wayne was super helpful in getting me a pitch with plenty of room to site the van. The pitch had fresh water & electric points so this helped me with learning how to connect everything. Toilets were immaculate even though the site still has post-wet weather mud. Lots of work has been carried out on each pitch which seems to have reduced the churning of the sodden grass (all due to so much rain this winter). We had 2 young boys with us who were out playing all day...always a plus sign for a family site.

We only live locally but tried the site for a first trial and hope to return again as it's such a lovely spot and so close to Monmouth and down the road from a massive garden centre.

    Disliked:

Elderly lady (site resident) told our boys they should not be riding their bikes and to "clear off". Dampened their enthusiasm but nothing to do with the site itself.

This was our first time caravaning and couldn't have picked a better site to have chosen. We were welcomed onto the site and Billy was excellent and helped to pitch up the caravan. He was excellent throughout the stay and couldn't have been anymore helpful he truly made us feel special from start to finish.
The site facilities were excellent and very clean with all the facilities nicely laid out. Regardless of the weather our stay even though one night was trouble free. We wish we could have stayed longer. We will return very soon.
Great place to go out and visit many walks if that's your thing plus Monmouth in easy reach and multiple other places for all the family.

Staff and management were nice and friendly

    Disliked:

The field for the camping when we turned up was boggy, but we carried on and set up day 2 was OK the site was drying out a little, day 3 the field was flooded and we were floating on around a foot and half of water so packed up and went home, in our opinion the field had a tendency to flood when it rains, no one came to see us that day or offered any help, has for the shower blocks there was no heating or hot water and from a previous comment (yes we do no to use a tap) the site could be a nice site if only they had put drainage in the camping field.

From the manager...

hi, obviously we were aware of what happened in the camping field at the end of easter, this was not a problem with drainage within the park but rather the gullys on the road out front blocked and overflowed meaning all the rainwater from the hill opposite and that taken by the road ran down into our camping field. Highways were made aware and have made repairs. I can only apologise from our side that the issue was not spotted sooner as it flooded through the night. this is now resolved so I am sure we will not be flooded again! I will check on the timers in shower rooms as we check on them every day and nobody reported a fault with heating or hot water back to us. Maybe there is a timer issue and the heating is not on at the colder times when needed.
Thankyou for taking the time to write a review and all comments are taken on board and acted on where possible.

The pitch site was really muddy and the second it flooded so packed up and went home, shower blocks were clean but with no heating or hot water we only used them for toilets has it was to cold for a shower

From the manager...

thankyou for the review, the weather has been quite relentless for the last few weeks and caused 2 caravan parks in Monmouth to flood and close over the weekend. unfortunately part of our camping field did get waterlogged, not by the river but by the fact that the road out front could not take the water and the gullys overflowed into our site. The council have been informed of this and hopefully will repair the issue soon. I would also like to clarify that there is heating and hot water in our shower block, which has been working all season so far with no issue to my knowledge. You do have to turn the top of the taps for temperature as well as pushing them down for water, so perhaps you used one that had been turned for cold only? in any case thankyou for taking the time to review the park and we do hope to see you again soon with some better weather!

The campsite is not ready to open the grounds are so wet and muddy is an understatement the toilets are new but not heating on and no where put your things while having a shower or get dry they have plenty of room to make the shower enclosure bigger to put a seat and curtain it wouldn’t take room from the wash area as it’s so large and very very cold when your in there

From the manager...

the ground was very wet due to the severe weather we have had, this is the reason we asked you to park your vehicles in the carparks and not on the grass. The photos you have included are of the damage caused when you drove a large van onto the grass and got stuck, having to be pushed out by us and a machine, then re-level the ground that you had churned up. The toilet block is newly refurbished and we are planning on increasing the size of several of the shower cubicles as we agree that some have come out smaller than we had hoped, there is already heating in the shower block. There are also hooks in the showers to hang belongings while showering

Local attractions

This is walking land… Monmouthshire has over 1,000 miles of public footpaths to investigate, and walks all over the county including a couple around Glen Trothy's local village of Mitchel Troy, through woods and farmland and with views right across Wales and across the border to Herefordshire.

County town Monmouth, the birthplace of Henry V, is these days a Fair Trade town with many independent shops, regular markets, cafés and restaurants alongside chain shops, the Monmouth Museum and the Savoy Theatre, believed to be the oldest working theatre in Wales.

If you'd rather get a bit more active, the River Wye is around for kayaking and paddleboarding (and fishing for more contemplative times), and golf is available nearby. Too tame? Take a tandem paraglide flight off the Blorenge hill in the Brecon Beacons National Park.

If the weather is a bit drizzly, piles of indoor attractions are around too, like the museums of Abergavenny, Monmouth or Chepstow or a castle visit to Caldicot and its country park, Tretower Court, Goodrich or Raglan.

Must see

  • Caldicot Castle & Country Park (1.6 miles)
  • Raglan Castle (5.1 miles)
  • Goodrich Castle (7.3 miles)
