  • Riverside location in a secluded countryside setting

  • Family run with modern amenities and play area
Pitch up by a Welsh river in Monmouthshire's clean, friendly and well-maintained Glen Trothy Caravan Park, in a secluded countryside setting near the village of Mitchel Troy about a mile and a half from Monmouth. You'll be nicely placed here for traipses around the Wye Valley and the lush Forest of Dean – and as it's Wales, the area as a whole is full of ancient castles and abbeys, spectacular scenery and miles of walking trails. Kids will be kept occupied on site at the well-equipped and centrally set play area, with swings, climbing frame, play deck and cabin, ladders, a climbing wall and a sand pit, and grownups are well sorted with the site amenities: Glen Trothy has a launderette, a washing-up room and a toilet and shower block with showers, hand dryers and hairdryers. The facilities are suitable for guests with disabilities. Propane and butane gas are also available, as well as a chemical disposal point.

Local attractions

This is walking land… Monmouthshire has over 1,000 miles of public footpaths to investigate, and walks all over the county including a couple around Glen Trothy's local village of Mitchel Troy, through woods and farmland and with views right across Wales and across the border to Herefordshire. County town Monmouth, the birthplace of Henry V, is these days a Fair Trade town with many independent shops, regular markets, cafés and restaurants alongside chain shops, the Monmouth Museum and the Savoy Theatre, believed to be the oldest working theatre in Wales. If you'd rather get a bit more active, the River Wye is around for kayaking and paddleboarding (and fishing for more contemplative times), and golf is available nearby. Too tame? Take a tandem paraglide flight off the Blorenge hill in the Brecon Beacons National Park. If the weather is a bit drizzly, piles of indoor attractions are around too, like the museums of Abergavenny, Monmouth or Chepstow or a castle visit to Caldicot and its country park, Tretower Court, Goodrich or Raglan.

Liked: After reading many negative views I was very pleased that:
On arrival I was met and warmly greeted by reception with a map of the site. It contained all I needed to know. I was pointed in the right direction and clearly explained where my pitch was
The bathrooms were very clean and showers were hot and spacious. OK I had to pay 20p for a shower but it kept the overall booking cost Dow
The grassed pitch was level and the showers / toilets were close
Late checkout at 1200

Disliked: Guests who couldn’t be bothered to clean toilets after using them

Fully-serviced concrete slab caravan site

Liked: Waffle cone ice-cream from van that came on site Saturday evening.
I think this is a base if you are sightseeing in the area, and not for a holiday.

Disliked: Different people have different opinions. We are not posh. We have stayed on various styles of sites.

On arrival we were just given a map to our pitch, with no other information.
Our 'serviced pitch' was among the touring caravans that were permanent residents. It was patio, so we were unable to peg anything down. Residents staring at us, made us feel that we had been put in 'their street'.
No scenic views, other than back end of toilet block, with building materials and vans and inside next caravan. Non-serviced piches were put far too close to each other (not sure fire safety distancing was met). There was a reoccurring smell from either the toilet block or unused caravan next to us. Broken showers and toilets in men's and womens.
Signs around site saying 'no scooters, bikes, skateboards etc allowed anywhere on site', but resident children were doing it.
Dogs not kept on leads around park and the supposed dog field was carpark and overflow camping.
Went to reception to ask where bins were and told the one outside the office was the only one for the whole site and no recycling. Asked where there was any access to the river and just told no.
We paid for Saturday to Monday but wanted to leave within a few hours of arrival, but stayed 1 night and left early Sunday morning.
Overpriced for low quality, compared to other sites.

Liked: Good base for the local area near to local town and supermarket
10 minute drive to raglan castle which is a definitely worth a visit
Flat pitches
Friendly receptionist
Despite the only toilet block on site it was tidy
Nice park on site
5 minute walk we discovered a brilliant play park all fenced in , brand new and very quiet !

Disliked: Given a map on arrival and told pitch but no one to show u so had to guess what part to pitch on? Lettered Slab was centre of pitch or end of pitch?
20p for a shower for 4 minutes and sometimes the shower cut off before timer had stopped and at times very hot too hot for kids
Only 4 showers in the block and one was permanently out of order mens and ladies , one morning only two showers working in both ladies and mens so lots of waiting around
No mop/brush to clean up after your shower so floor often wet and dirty
One shower/toilet block for whole campsite
Noisy “neighbours” woke us at 730am arguing !
One water point /Waste water at the other end of the park
We were lucky with our pitches but lots of caravans all cramped together ?? Fire safety distance ??
No bikes or scooters to be used (due to an incident last year ) which was a shame however a large group of families /kids in the park ignored the rules and kids let loose and a few near misses with cars and caravans using the road
No TV signal at all
Free Wi-Fi but kept disconnecting
