Campston Hill Wild Camping: Bell tent

General

  • Dog-friendly wild camping site with views of the Black Mountains
  • A 15-minute drive to the Black Mountains and Abergavenny
  • A five-minute drive to the Offa’s Dyke footpath and the nearest pub

From tackling summits to taking it easy on grassy pitches with views of the Black Mountains, spend some time away at Campston Hill Wild Camping in Monmouthshire, 15 minutes’ drive from the relaxed market town of Abergavenny. This peaceful dog-friendly site makes a good base for mixing and matching mountain hikes in the Black Mountains, including the Sugar Loaf (20 minutes’ drive), Skirrid Fawr (15 minutes) or Blorenge (25 minutes), with local footpaths and tours around local heritage sites including castles and ruined priories.

Fired up for wild camping, this site has basic facilities including toilets and a dishwashing area so you can focus your attention on the sublime views. Part of a working farm down a private farm lane half a mile from the nearest road, the surroundings are pretty peaceful and the site is also nicely connected to several walking trails, including the huge Offa’s Dyke footpath within five minutes’ drive of the site.

A stop on the same footpath, touch base at the nearest pub, five minutes’ drive away for a pint of ale or a meal. Handily, the pub has a beer garden where you (and the dog) can sit outside and rest your feet. Later, pick up any supplies (and any bits you need for a campfire back on site) from the food shops in Abergavenny, 15 minutes’ drive away.

Please note

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

If making a fire, the fuel, logs and coal have to be purchased on site.

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

This site has no on-site shower facilities.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

Absolutely amazing view from the campsite. Was quiet and peaceful. The ability to buy firewood and have a campfire is a great addition to the stay. Have plenty of space between pitches. Would most definitely go again. Ellie was extremely helpful and kind

    Disliked:

Expensive for basic and even more expensive once charged for a dog yet offered no facilities. Odd to understand why an additional charge was made

From the manager...

We don’t charge any extra for dogs, they are included for free. You were only charged for the pitch and a log basket (added by yourselves)
I’m sorry you’d thought otherwise

The view, the friendly host, decent toilets, excellent local pub in Pandy, close proximity to the skirrid and sugar loaf mountains. The stars and moon.

    Disliked:

Other campers with bright lights that they kept on the whole evening, causing light pollution, sawing booming tree cutting/ logging sounds in the night. Early morning shooting sounds in the valley.

From the manager...

We apologise for the sounds in the night. Network Rail is doing some major works to the main south wales railway line. So sadly out of our control and can only be done at night. The shooting sounds are crop scarers on neighbouring arable farms to prevent crow damage. Glad you enjoyed your stay with us 😊 Thank you for coming
