Campston Hill Wild Camping: The view that greets you on arrival to your camping field in front

General

  • Dog-friendly campsite with views of the Black Mountains
  • A 15-minute drive to the Black Mountains and Abergavenny
  • A five-minute drive to the Offa’s Dyke footpath and the nearest pub

From tackling summits to taking it easy on grassy pitches with views of the Black Mountains, spend some time away at Campston Hill Wild Camping in Monmouthshire, 15 minutes’ drive from the relaxed market town of Abergavenny. This peaceful dog-friendly site makes a good base for mixing and matching mountain hikes in the Black Mountains, including the Sugar Loaf (20 minutes’ drive), Skirrid Fawr (15 minutes) or Blorenge (25 minutes), with local footpaths and tours around local heritage sites including castles and ruined priories.

Fired up for wild camping, this site has basic facilities including toilets and a dishwashing area so you can focus your attention on the sublime views. Part of a working farm down a private farm lane half a mile from the nearest road, the surroundings are pretty peaceful and the site is also nicely connected to several walking trails, including the huge Offa’s Dyke footpath within five minutes’ drive of the site.

As well as wild camping, this site offers completely private, luxuriously furnished bell tents sleeping up to four people. They have access to private eco toilets and refreshing open-air hot showers and are in a peaceful location with gorgeous views.

A stop on the same footpath, touch base at the nearest pub, five minutes’ drive away for a pint of ale or a meal. Handily, the pub has a beer garden where you (and the dog) can sit outside and rest your feet. Later, pick up any supplies (and any bits you need for a campfire back on site) from the food shops in Abergavenny, 15 minutes’ drive away.

Please note

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

If making a fire, the fuel, logs and coal have to be purchased on site.

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

This site has no on-site shower facilities.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

    Disliked:

Quite a long way down to the site from the farm entrance, which was okay, you just don't want to be back and forth a lot!

From the manager...

Thank you for coming to stay with us, I’m sorry you weren’t aware of the remote location of the campsite. We have put in the description ‘half a mile from the main road’ to make people aware. We particularly chose the campsite location to provide a real close experience of Wild Camping away from any roads or houses but with the benefit of toilet facilities. Thank you for your feedback 😊

It was our first time visiting this site on the way down to the camping field we past a little green hut which was the toilet block it was very clean and tidy well stocked with hand soap, hand sanitizer and toilet roll the fresh drinking water tap is just located outside the toilet block which is a about 5 minutes walk from site. Upon arrival we text the owner to let them we have arrived and where we had pitched our tent so that they could bring us our log basket the logs were fab and lasted the night so we could keep nice and toasty by the campfire. The camp site is lovely and spacious there wasn’t many campers there which we loved as it was so peaceful the views were absolutely amazing Especially at night the sky was so clear and we could see so many stars my children were very happy as they wanted to try and see a shooting star we would definitely come back and stay again.

Lovely location and views, the bell tent was fabulous with comfortable bed, bedding and kitchen utensils ( everything we needed). The toilet and outdoor shower were very much appreciated and certainly an experience! It was nice to be so close to nature - exactly what we needed for our holiday. Abergavenny and the area is lovely as well and we would recommend climbing Sugar Loaf- beautiful vistas and wild horses!

An amazing amount of space to pitch up (and the option to choose wherever you’d like). Love the option to purchase some firewood, which came in very handing when our camping stove died! The views are incredible and Ellie was so helpful from the start.
