General

  • Riverside pub campsite in the Brecon Beacons National Park
  • Campfires encouraged: just bring your own firewood
  • Shower hut and toilets

Welsh river and Welsh wander: small and friendly Tafarn-Y-Garreg Campsite is a riverside site in the Brecon Beacons National Park, with direct access to the Beacons Way footpath, the 95-mile trail meandering through the park up to the highest peak in the Black Mountains, Fan-Brycheiniog, and the Brecons's glacier lakes.

And as you might wish when staying in such a walkable place, Tafarn-Y-Garreg has a cosy pub too… It's a mountain-style chalet, serving food in the evening and a wide range of fine brews such as lagers, ales and ciders to have in front of the fire after a long day's tramp.

The camping field is shaded by trees and is a short stroll from the shower hut and the toilets. And as you might also wish on a site with a wild camping vibe such as this, campfires are fully encouraged, so do bring along bagfuls of marshmallows and several packs of bangers.

Loved being able to have the campfire right next to the river. The location is great for walking in the Brecons.

    Disliked:

The outdoor shower wasn't the best and the portaloo in the field was a bit grim. The toilet over in the pub was fine but didn't want to cross a busy road in the middle of the night.

    Disliked:

Toilet & shower facilities were very, very basic and the portaloo was smelly.
The pitches were very close to the main road so it was noisy, plus the site was overbooked so everyone was in close proximity to one another. It didn't really have value for money, we paid the same recently for a campsite only about an hour away with fantastic shower & toilet facilities. We left the campsite early.

Nice and calm area to pitch up tents with the possibility to make a bonfire.
The owner was very friendly and helpful; we felt safe and comfortable.
We enjoyed the coffee and beer in the restaurant.
Fast Wifi is available for free.

    Disliked:

The showers for the campsite seemed provisional, not a big deal but with room for improvement.

Loved the riverside camp pitch. Loved the fire pits and the views up the mountain. Loved the random peacocks who wandered through the site! Loved the wildness of the little site balanced by the provision of comforts in the form of showers, loos and pub across the road. Exactly what I needed!

    Disliked:

Proximity of main road (though sound of traffic drowned out by roar of river!)

The place is well located to start many walks and activities. The campsite is quite sober, with an outside shower and a construction site toilet. The owner was very friendly and spent time to help us out and advise us on te things to do.

    Disliked:

It could have been cheaper, regarding the facilities of the campsite.

The campsite was exactly what we wanted: Close enough to the Brecon Beacons that it wasn't a chore to get there but far enough away from heavily populated areas so that we could relax in the outdoors with our own space.

    Disliked:

The only thing I can comment on here, was that there was no light in the portaloo (well, not a working one anyway)

Not a dislike, but there is very little signal/wifi so make sure you are prepared!

Local attractions

Are you a superhero fan? Have a heroic hike up to the nearby Henrhyd Falls, the highest waterfall in south Wales and used as the cover for the Batcave in The Dark Knight Rises. (It's easy to find from here: ask the amiable Tafarn-Y-Garreg Campsite owner to point you on your way.)

Slightly more gently, Tafarn-Y-Garreg has direct access to the 95 miles of the Beacons Way, running through the national park up to the mountains via woodland, moorland and farmland. It's a trail for experienced hikers and is only waymarked on the woodland stretches, so bring a compass and an Ordnance Survey map of the Brecon Beacons National Park if you want to give it a serious tackle.

The 11 miles of the Dan-yr-Ogof Caves or National Showcaves Centre for Wales are a short drive away. Once named as the greatest natural wonder in Britain, the caves are now part of a big family complex with dinosaurs, a shire horse centre and farm, playgrounds and more.

For a bit of fishing, head to the fly fishing of the Crai Reservoir, a wild brown trout fishery with full access to its stony banks.
