Looking in to the tent

General

  • Friendly glamping site in green countryside, overlooking Dunraven bay
  • Dry and warm bell tents with toilet and shower facilities on site
  • Have meals at the on-site pub or restaurant across the way

If you’re on the hunt for Glamorgan glamping, take a look at the smart canvas digs set up at Bell Tents Wales, a short trot from the beach in the little village of Southerndown (five miles south of Bridgend).

Each of the fancy tents here is slightly different in style but all are kitted out with rugs, cushions and airbeds. There’s plenty of sleeping and living space inside for up to six, and on summer days you can roll up the sides to take in the views while you lounge under cover.

The units are dry and warm, and there are toilet and shower facilities on site. You'll need to bring bedding (pillows and sleeping bags or duvets) along with whatever kitchen kit you need for your stay. A traditional country pub is just next door for drinks, food and occasional live music on Friday or Saturday nights; also just across the lane is a restaurant that serves breakfast at weekends.

Bookings must not be for more than 2 consecutive nights.

Guests must bring their own duvets, pillows, sheets and towels when staying in rental accommodation. You will not be allowed to stay if you do not bring these items.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

Owing to government regulations, groups of 6 or more people are not permitted.

Excellent communication from the owner who made sure we had everything that we needed. Beautiful spot of countryside. 5 minutes walk from the beach m. Great facilities, clean and comfortable.

    Disliked:

Not a fan of dogs and two tried to come in to out tent early hours of the morning due to the owners not keeping them on leads as was clearly stated on signs around the campsite.

From the manager...

Hi Deena Thanks for the review. I'm really happy you enjoyed & hope to see you again. Sorry about the dogs, can't understand why people do that as there are loads of signs. Cheers Anthony :)

The Bell tent was really lovely and clean, and all set up and ready to go. Anthony could not be more helpful, and we’ve stayed here twice now because of that.
Great having the pub on site and walkable to gorgeous Southerndown beach, ...what’s not to like?
We had amazing weather and a great time.

    Disliked:

facilities could do with a bit more regular cleaning (toilets) and making sure toilet rolls replaced, not really awful or anything but just where young kids are in and out of them a lot I think and don’t clean up after themselves :)

From the manager...

Hi Alex. Thank you ever so much for the feedback. It was really nice to meet all of you again. Thank you for pointing the toilets out. I am going to supply toilet paper in my tents form now on, I wouldn't have known otherwise. The tent was really clean and tidy after you left, as always thank you. Look forward to seeing you again. Thanks Anthony :)

The location was beautiful. Staff at pub amazing

Was not as advertised. No farmhouse cafe. Toilet facilities were outdated, scruffy and at times unhygienic. Impossible to shave as only one mirror in gents and no hot water. Was just a field behind a pub.

Tent was furnished and already up when we arrived. Anthony had called earlier in the week to see if we needed any extras etc and was ready waiting at the site for our arrival. He was friendly and helpful.
Site was clean and fairly quiet with plenty of room.
Great to be within walking distance to the beach and have a pub next door.

    Disliked:

We had a small leak in the tent in the last night when there was heavy wind and rain.
Showers on site weren't great, accessible toilet isnt very accessible witha small step to get in and a heavy stiff door that doesn't lock easily.
There was also a lack of information on where to eat and local amenities. Pub kitchen closes at 7:30 on a Sunday.

Local attractions

The site overlooks Dunraven bay, locally known as Southerndown beach. The beach is easily accessed by a short walk or by car, and is a popular starting point for sailing, surfing and fishing.

For local walks, make for the sand dunes at Merthyer Mawr, which overlook the Bristol Channel, or to Porthcawl, Ogmore-by-Sea and walks by Ogmore and Candleston castles. Woodland walks, castles, villages and fab beaches are all around this Glamorgan Heritage Coast setting.

Horse riding is available from Ogmore Farm set under Ogmore Castle, where two-hour treks leave from the yard twice a day to canter along beaches and past high sand dunes. Or leave from the farm to go across the stepping stones on the River Ewenny, then over the swinging bridge to reach the village of Merthyr Mawr. From there, walk through the village towards the dunes, past a pretty church, wildlife to spot and strawberry fields to pick from (in season, charge applies)

For golf, Southerndown Golf Club a couple of miles away is a links course making up one of the driest courses in Wales; golf is available all year round for members and visitors.

Walk west from Ogmore Farm to get to Candleston Castle at the entrance to the sand dune slack of Merthyr Mawr Warren, or walk, drive or take the bus to the farm and then through Merthyr Mawr village.
