General

  • Friendly glamping site in green countryside, overlooking Dunraven Bay
  • Dry and warm bell tents with toilet and shower facilities on site
  • Have meals at the on-site pub or restaurant across the way

If you’re on the hunt for Glamorgan glamping, take a look at the smart canvas digs set up at Bell Tents Wales, a short trot from the beach in the little village of Southerndown (five miles south of Bridgend).

Each of the fancy tents here is slightly different in style but all are kitted out with rugs, cushions and airbeds. There’s plenty of sleeping and living space inside for up to six, and on summer days you can roll up the sides to take in the views while you lounge under cover.

The units are dry and warm, and there are toilet and shower facilities on site. You'll need to bring bedding (pillows and sleeping bags or duvets) along with whatever kitchen kit you need for your stay. A traditional country pub is just next door for drinks, food and occasional live music on Friday or Saturday nights; also just across the lane is a restaurant that serves breakfast at weekends.

Lovely spacious, clean bell tent. Nice area, very scenic. Good on site facilities. Pub was lovely with great food and welcoming atmosphere.

    Disliked:

Bell tent hire was quite pricey, but first time staying in one, so probably the going rate in high season. Didn't try the portaloo converted into shower. Would have preferred a more private setup

The tent was in brilliant condition and very sturdy despite the bad winds. Lovely and warm, very cosy and the tent location was perfect as we could park right next to it and had easy access to the pop up coffee shop next door, pub and shower block. Great communication from Anthony and would definitely stay here again

    Disliked:

Not "Glamping" as advertised, more like rent a tent. Tent too close to showers/toilet, so constant foot traffic and light shining into tent all night. Tent probably located there for convenience but we would have rather been in a quiet corner and walk a little further for the facilities.
No one around to enforce camp site rules, so car movement at all hours and people being loud into the early hours of the morning.
For the price being charged, Better of bringing your own tent

    Disliked:

Tent location, would have preferred to be up in one of the corners out of the way rather than bang in the middle of the field

From the manager...

Hi Scott

Thanks for the review and i agree the location wasn’t as good as we’d like. We normally are in the corner but had to move because camper vans had booked before camping was declared safe by Mr Drakeford. Being the first weekend we could legally open and the bank holiday we where without a choice. Hope you come again. Thanks Anthony

Excellent communication from the owner who made sure we had everything that we needed. Beautiful spot of countryside. 5 minutes walk from the beach m. Great facilities, clean and comfortable.

    Disliked:

Not a fan of dogs and two tried to come in to out tent early hours of the morning due to the owners not keeping them on leads as was clearly stated on signs around the campsite.

From the manager...

Hi Deena Thanks for the review. I'm really happy you enjoyed & hope to see you again. Sorry about the dogs, can't understand why people do that as there are loads of signs. Cheers Anthony :)

The Bell tent was really lovely and clean, and all set up and ready to go. Anthony could not be more helpful, and we’ve stayed here twice now because of that.
Great having the pub on site and walkable to gorgeous Southerndown beach, ...what’s not to like?
We had amazing weather and a great time.

    Disliked:

facilities could do with a bit more regular cleaning (toilets) and making sure toilet rolls replaced, not really awful or anything but just where young kids are in and out of them a lot I think and don’t clean up after themselves :)

From the manager...

Hi Alex. Thank you ever so much for the feedback. It was really nice to meet all of you again. Thank you for pointing the toilets out. I am going to supply toilet paper in my tents form now on, I wouldn't have known otherwise. The tent was really clean and tidy after you left, as always thank you. Look forward to seeing you again. Thanks Anthony :)

Local attractions

The site overlooks Dunraven Bay, locally known as Southerndown beach. The beach is easily accessed by a short walk or by car, and is a popular starting point for sailing, surfing and fishing.

For local walks, make for the sand dunes at Merthyr Mawr, which overlook the Bristol Channel, or to Porthcawl, Ogmore-by-Sea and walks by Ogmore and Candleston castles. Woodland walks, castles, villages and fab beaches are all around this Glamorgan Heritage Coast setting.

Horse riding is available from Ogmore Farm set under Ogmore Castle, where two-hour treks leave from the yard twice a day to canter along beaches and past high sand dunes. Or leave from the farm to go across the stepping stones on the River Ewenny, then over the swinging bridge to reach the village of Merthyr Mawr. From there, walk through the village towards the dunes, past a pretty church, wildlife to spot and strawberry fields to pick from (in season, charge applies).

For golf, Southerndown Golf Club a couple of miles away is a links course making up one of the driest courses in Wales; golf is available all year round for members and visitors.

Walk west from Ogmore Farm to get to Candleston Castle at the entrance to the sand dune slack of Merthyr Mawr Warren, or walk, drive or take the bus to the farm and then through Merthyr Mawr village.
