Relatively quiet site. Toilets and showers appeared clean, but I did not use them.

    Disliked:

I usually do not pay much attention to reviews, as I like to make up my own mind about a site I stay at. However, the negative reviews I've now read appear to be justified.

As you enter the site, you pass through what is described as the "Service Area". As the old adage goes, first impressions count. I found it to be both untidy and unwelcoming. I appreciate every site or farm has a service area, but there are ways of presenting or screening areas to make it less unsightly, especially if you want customers to drive through it at the start of their stay. It felt like you were driving through a scrapyard or refuge area.

An old Hymer motorhome was parked up and presumably in the process of being worked on, but looked in a sorry state.

I was allocated a pitch at the bottom of the site, in between a mound of earth and bin bags to my right, and an abandoned car to my left. Car parts and rubbish were on the ground around it.

Had I been able to book elsewhere I would have, but all other places were full upon making telephone enquiries. I resigned myself to stay, pulled the blinds down to obscure the sights around me and left at first light this morning.

Having been to many sites, I really cannot see how there is a satisfactory explanation or reason for what is described above. Only a few nights before, I stayed on a stunning site just outside of Llanelli for only £14 for a night. It was of the highest standard imaginable. If only I could have a refund on this one.

From the manager...

The car belongs to my nephew. It isn’t abandoned. The topsoil to the other side has just been delivered to be used in landscaping some pitches as soon as the ground has dried up enough. Paul said he did explain about that to you. At no point did you indicate that you didn’t want to stay and request a refund. If you had told us you weren’t going to stay and would prefer a refund, we would have given it as we know how wet all the grass pitches were and therefore impossible to drive on.

Thank you for taking the time to leave a honest review without prejudice. The pitches were a complete mess by the end of a very wet high season and for this we can only apologise and pray for better weather this year. Would love to see you again!

Site was wet and bogged down, pitches very small. Facilities rudimentary (to say the least) and the site had a generally scruffy appearance, particularly the entrance. I could not even get my 'van into position after getting bogged down. Fortunately another caravanner helped me get out. I ended up not staying here and moved onto another site and have not yet received a refund.

We apologise for the wet weather but as anyone should realise, that is out of our control. Unfortunately for us, the entrance to the campsite is through our service area, which every campsite has but usually tucked away in a corner. Sadly, owing to the layout of our land and the area approved by the council as the campsite field, access is only available through our service area. We would hope that campers wouldn’t judge us on that and confine their reviews to the actual campsite but this often isn’t what happens. We are sorry you weren’t able to pitch your caravan, manoeuvring can be difficult for some folk, however, regarding a refund, we haven’t been asked for one!!! Please don’t penalise us for not doing something we haven’t even been requested to do!

Very friendly owners who tried to make the campsite as hospitable as possible which was proving to be difficult considering the amount of rainfall over the last 6 weeks. However, we didn't have any problems, our pitch did the job and the kitchen and shower rooms were kept clean. Fantastic area for dog walking as its a 5 minute walk to the Nature Reserve. Short drive to Bridgend and Porth Cawl.

    Disliked:

Bins were overflowing but it was the end of the bank holiday weekend and were due to be emptied the following day.

From the manager...

Thank you for your lovely review and your understanding of the problems the wet weather had caused. It’s true, we did our best and spent £500 on turf to try and cover the worst bits. We are grateful for your appreciation of our efforts at that extremely difficult time. Hope to see you again this year!

Pleasant owners, site quite water logged due to the weather and was being returffed on a daily basis.

    Disliked:

Entrance was not good, a number of scrap vehicles and a caravan was not a welcoming sight. More offputting was a few motor homes and vehicles that looked abandoned.

True, our old Hymer is on site which Paul is in the process of repairing and the other motorhome on site is our neighbors brand new one! Hardly abandoned.

From the manager...

So much to dispute with this review, however, the main concern for us is the fact that this person took photos of PRIVATE PROPERTY ie NOT a part of the campsite and misrepresented them as being part of the site. This is ILLEGAL and we are considering whether or not to press charges. The boundaries of our campsite can be checked online at BCBC website. The pic of our old caravan which is displayed as being a seasonal pitch is NOT on ground that is part of the campsite. The picture of the ‘hard standing pitch’ is totally untrue. They will be hard standing pitches when they are finished being landscaped. This was just the first load of gravel that had been spread which we allowed overflow parking on. Incidentally, the £8 charged for parking was for 4 nights not 1 as implied. The pic that displayed ‘a pitch’ failed to mention that this was a backpacker pitch which was being landscaped at the time. The photo of the shed, again private property so illegal and untrue. This is possibly the most vindictive review I have ever had the misery of reading. Lies, illegal photography, as well as other offences. Totally untrue that the toilets were ‘never cleaned ‘ I think the picture shows that isn’t true. It was true that there wasn’t an external door at the time, at a cost of £500 a piece and we needed 3, I had to source reclaimed doors, which I have. I fail see why this is considered a massive problem as before the facilities renovation, there were doors on each section, however, NO ONE EVER CLOSED THEM!! Also, I find it impossible to believe that the campers refused to move their vehicles, why would they? A truly horrible person!

As entering site derelict cars rubbish bins full and pieces of building materials scattered, nothing like photos or reviews. Although it had been raining for a time pitches were herendous, not maintained at all , toilets kept having water puddles in and no renewal of paper. I could go on definitely would not recommend to anyone.
This site needs to be reviewed as a campsite.

From the manager...

We would hope that campers wouldn’t judge us on that and confine their reviews to the actual campsite but this often isn’t what happens. The continual rain caused a major problem for us but as I have mentioned to another reviewer, we spent £500 on turf trying to improve the worst bits. Laying turf in the pouring rain not a good experience and I really don’t see what else we could have done to ‘maintain ‘ them. We had a problem in the men’s loos when a camper raised the shower head to shoot across the cubicle which caused puddles in the basin area. We have fitted bifold doors this year to solve this problem. If a cubicle runs out of paper between our checks, just let us know, it’s not a problem.

Meeting a nice welsh couple at the ebd of our stay

    Disliked:

This campsite had no noise control,no distance between tents/caravan which is a fire hazard and no chance or a little privacy and it has no drainage so the campsite is thickly bogged and soggy, the first 2 nights party's stopped at 12:30am

From the manager...

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review, however, there are a few things which we strongly dispute. Firstly, all units are pitched at the recommended distance as stated by the Camping & Caravanning Club. Six meters between units EXCLUDING guy ropes. Some recommendations are 3 meters between tents and 4 meters between mixed units. Fire safety regulations do NOT consider these distances to be a fire hazard. Regarding the 'lack of privacy', if you want to camp in splendid isolation, do NOT camp in the school holidays. Secondly, we are more than a bit fed up with people complaining that the ground is wet. Are you, or indeed any of the previous complainants, qualified groundworks engineers? We had a qualified groundwork engineer on site several years ago and he advised us on what to do regarding improving the drainage, which we carried out faithfully. So to all you people who think you have x-ray vision, there IS DEFINITELY DRAINAGE on the field. However, as I have previously and repeatedly said, we are at the foot of a mountain on a peat topsoil with a clay subsoil. It is NEVER going to be as dry as a sandy soil. Furthermore, it has rained EVERY DAY at some point for the last five weeks. We were informed that as of last week, some campsites in Porthcawl were flooded and not able to accept ANY bookings, so we feel our little field is holding its own. And finally the 'lack of noise control'. We do NOT sleep on site. If no one reports any noise, we are not aware of it and NO ONE reported any noise during this campers stay. Why didn't you report it? We have reached the end of our tether with poor reviews generated simply because of bad weather. We do not control the weather, if we did, it would be wall to wall sunshine! If you cannot cope with camping in the British weather, camp in Spain, or better yet, stay in a hotel.

Cosy family run campsite. Helpful management who tried to make our stay as comfortable as possible.

    Disliked:

Facilities and pitch conditions did not warrant the amount charged per night. This is no more than a £10 per night campsite. Not the £19 a night we were charged for one adult and one child. All the pitches were severely waterlogged which is obviously a weather issue but I think better drainage would prevent it happening again. The showers were hot but with the door missing off the entrance, it wasn't very private. There could have been more waste bins in the wash rooms and washing up area. There were no recycling facilities that I could find.

From the manager...

Pitches were wet and muddy owing to 3 weeks of rain. I won't repeat myself explaining our soil and substrate and the fact that there is extensive drainage on site which is why the ground is dry in two days of no rain (one if it's really sunny). The waste is recycled by the commercial waste collector. See my previous reply regarding exterior doors. However, the remark that really intrigues me is the £10 per night. Please, please let us know where you can camp in August with electric hook up and free showers/ hot water for £10 per night! We will be rushing to stay there ourselves!!
This lady was part of a large party, but had booked on her own and so was not initially sited with her friends. She was quite rude about this so, although it was 7pm at night when she arrived , we re jigged the pitching which enabled her to camp with her friends. I wish now we hadn't bothered as this is the thanks you get.
