  • Lakeside glamping at a 60-acre site 10 minutes' drive from Wrexham
  • Chester, Llangollen and three golf courses within a half-hour drive
  • Café and licensed bar with live music on site; fishing lake
Finding a secluded spot surrounded by mature woodlands in north Wales is a fine idea in itself – but it gets even better here if you’re into your fishing. And that’s because Commonwood Leisure has 10 lakes around its 60-acre site, catering for everyone from kids and beginners to pros (who may like to wrestle with the 60-pound whopper that lives in the catfish lake…) It’s all set up to be as straightforward as possible at this well-maintained park: the glamping tents are set up either by a one-acre lake or in a family area away from the water's edge. Wherever you stay you'll get a private fishing peg for each tent (plus a private toilet and parking space). Not fussed by fishing? This lakeside setting should be pretty splendid for you too: there’s plenty of space to relax by the water, taking in the views and lighting up a barbecue or firepit for warm evenings. Getting out and about should be straightforward as well: the site is five minutes’ drive from the village of Holt (for pubs, cafés and an excellent farm shop) and 10 minutes from the centre of Wrexham. A café on site serves up tasty food and there's a licensed bar with live music at weekends. On site, there are indoor and outdoor seating areas and plenty of areas to walk (a plus for dog owners, as the site's dog-friendly). If walking’s not such a hit with the kids, they can get stuck into rural life by spending some time with the herd of friendly pygmy goats on site (even friendlier, rumour has it, if you grab a pack of ginger biscuits from the café to feed them with…)

Liked: Great site, welcoming upon arrival, got us straight to our pod, pod was very clean! The set up was great and minimal. The views around the site was superb. Love the idea of the under cover bar and pizza place , so cool , definitely will be back in the near future. Suitable for all.

Madoc Lake non-electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: Hard standing areas were really high quality and large, swimming pond was lovely with nice platform to get in and out, bar area, live music, cafe for breakfast, real family feeling and so friendly. Portaloos were cleanest and best looked after that I’ve ever used! And clearly the new toilet block will be up and running soon. Bag of logs £6 were high quality too and lasted ages!

Disliked: Nothing!

Madoc Lake non-electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: Site was clean, kept tidy. Friendly staff, nice ‘pub’ onsite serving home-made pizza, burgers etc, there was live music during the evening. There is also a small cafe serving breakfast, tea/coffee etc Pricing of food and drinks average. Portaloo type facilities dotted around the site. Enjoyed our stay, would visit again.

Disliked: Very little to no lighting in places. More lighting for pathways is needed, not easy to find your pitch in the dark!!

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your comments, glad you enjoyed our site. We are in the middle of installing a new shower block by the lake and lighting is on our list to do.

Madoc Lake fully-serviced hardstanding and grass touring pitch (waterside)

Liked: The pitch was in the perfect spot next to the lake, which was just gorgeous. The bar with the live music was brilliant and all the staff were friendly. We had pizza and chips at the bar and it was really fresh. Robinson the camp dog is adorable 😍.

Disliked: It was just a shame the shower block next to us wasn't finished

Fishing Canal electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: Lovely peaceful site . We stayed the weekend before Easter so were the only van on the site. So, limited service at the cafe but we had a lovely breakfast and managed to pick up some icecream just as they were closing. Very friendly and helpful staff. Good, clean facilities. Would definitely stay again if we were travelling in this area

Disliked: Only, very minor thing is it would be useful to know when the heating would be on in the shower room

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: It was lovely to meet you both hopefully see you again sometime :-)
