Lakeside pitches

On the lake

  • Lakeside site with 60 acres, 10 minutes' drive away from Wrexham
  • Chester, Llangollen and three golf courses within half an hour's drive
  • Fishing lakes; café and licensed bar with seasonal opening hours
Finding a secluded spot surrounded by mature woodlands in north Wales is a fine idea in itself – but it gets even better here if you’re into your fishing. And that’s because Commonwood Leisure has eight fishing lakes around its 60-acre site, as well as a swimming lake with a lakeside sauna. Not fussed by fishing? This lakeside setting should be pretty splendid for you too: there’s plenty of space to relax by the water, taking in the views and lighting up a barbecue or firepit for warm evenings. Getting out and about should be straightforward as well: the site is five minutes’ drive away from the village of Holt (for pubs, cafés and an excellent farm shop) and 10 minutes from the centre of Wrexham. It’s all set up to be as straightforward as possible at this well-maintained park too. On site is the Acorn bar and café, serving tasty food with background music (these two are open at select times on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays during high season; opening days, times and menu items are reduced during low season). On some weekends, there's live music and bouncy castles at the bar and café. There are also indoor and outdoor seating areas and plenty of areas to walk (a plus for dog owners, as the site is dog-friendly). If walking’s not such a hit with the kids, they can get stuck into rural life by spending some time with the herd of friendly pygmy goats on site.

Fishing Canal electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked The pitches were really spacious and because we went out of school time it was really quiet in the week.

Disliked The sign for the site is quite set back from the road so we actually passed it on our first attempt.
Upon arrival there was little or no signs showing where reception was so we drove into the car park to which was really busy to be bibbed by other cars obviously knowing where they were going !!
We drove down a road to the right which looked like it could lead to caravan pitches.
I got out of the car to look for reception and my husband continued down the road to a turning circle.
Checking in was very disorganised, the first guy just kept asking for my confirmation ( even though my internet reception was naff ) I told him my name but he was insistent he needed my confirmation email. Eventually a second guy turned up and he pointed out on a board where we were pitched. ( no pitch numbers just a make shift board )
He went through the basic camping rules ( dogs on lead, no campfires on the grass, no washing lines etc .. )
We were booked to stay for 9 days and for 80 % of the time it was lovely & quiet & chilled. Over the weekend ( which would obviously be busier ) we had a couple of neighbour issues but nothing major.
On out last night (Sunday ) a member of staff approached my husband and was quite abrupt telling him he couldn’t finish after 7 O’clock even though he had fished every other night until dusk and over the weekend we were woked up several times with fishing alarms going off.
We are not people to break the rules but they should be instigated at the beginning and not when it seems fit.

From the manager: Thank you for your review. There are two large signs either side of the gate, so not sure how you missed them. The car park being busy is not in our control, they were probably guests like yourselves checking in. Check in is in the office 1-5pm after this you check in at the bar, there are plenty of staff to assist you. We ask all of our staff to ask to see the confirmation e-mail as without it there is no confirming you are who you are. The board is for our use only so we can see at a glance where guests are sited, they obviously felt the mood and just done it from the board. There are pitch numbers on it but again for our use only. You would have been given the rules at check in which clearly states no fishing after 7pm, if you had been doing this for the duration then you were lucky that you had not been told prior to your last night, The rules are there for everyone to follow, more than actually give you the rules which you sign to say received there is not much else we can do to ensure they are followed. Issues with neighbours especially at the weekend is likely, had we been told at the time, the wardens that are on site 24 hours would have done something about it, but as they weren't there was little we could do. Knowing that sites get busy at weekends this shouldn't come as a surprise that there can be noise. You are at a fishing site, which obviously your husband enjoys, as do others, if they use alarms then that is part of fishing..

Liked The fishing was great

Disliked Didn't rate the toilet and shower at all, looked ratted though in defence of the site its a fishery that does a bit of touring,I booked it thinking it was a touring site 1st and fishing a bonus.kids running round screaming at 11pm wasn't good either

From the manager: Thank you for your review. The site does have fishing lakes but it is also a touring caravan site, not one more than the other so we cater for all tastes. All guests sign to agree to the rules on arrival, we can only hope they abide by the 10pm rule, for those that do not there are wardens on site 24 hours, when we are told of any noise after this time we do go to make sure the noise is kept under control. Unfortunately if we are not told then we cannot do anything about it.
