  • Lakeside glamping at a 60-acre site 10 minutes' drive from Wrexham
  • Chester, Llangollen and three golf courses within a half-hour drive
  • Fishing lake; café and licensed bar with live music
Finding a secluded spot surrounded by mature woodlands in north Wales is a fine idea in itself – but it gets even better here if you’re into your fishing. And that’s because Commonwood Leisure has 10 lakes around its 60-acre site, catering for everyone from kids and beginners to pros (who may like to wrestle with the 60-pound whopper that lives in the catfish lake…) It’s all set up to be as straightforward as possible at this well-maintained park: the pitches are set up either by a one-acre lake or in a family area away from the water's edge. Wherever you stay you'll get plenty of space (plus a private toilet and parking space). Not fussed by fishing? This lakeside setting should be pretty splendid for you too: there’s plenty of space to relax by the water, taking in the views and lighting up a barbecue or firepit for warm evenings. Getting out and about should be straightforward as well: the site is five minutes’ drive from the village of Holt (for pubs, cafés and an excellent farm shop) and 10 minutes from the centre of Wrexham. A café on site has indoor and outdoor seating; it's open from 9am to 2pm for breakfast and lunches. There's also a licensed bar on site which has live music throughout the high season and every other weekend in low season. A pizza bar is open for food. And what else? There are plenty of areas to walk (a plus for dog owners, as the site's dog-friendly). If walking’s not such a hit with the kids, they can get stuck into rural life by spending some time with the herd of friendly pygmy goats on site (even friendlier, rumour has it, if you grab a pack of ginger biscuits from the café to feed them with…).

Madoc Lake fully-serviced hardstanding touring pitch (waterside)

Liked: Lovely quiet site, very peaceful & clean The live music at the bar was really good at the weekend & there is a good choice of drinks and snacks at the bar too

Disliked: The bins/recycling are right by check in,so when you’re at the touring field you have to carry your rubbish bags quite a long way On the touring & Tipi pitches, there is only one shower for all to share (1 male & 1 female) could definitely do with some more! There was a lady when checking in who seemed quite abrupt and didn’t seem to smile at anybody, when we seen her over the weekend, she didn’t seem very happy and refused to say hello when smiled at,most staff didn't seem very cheerful if I’m being honest The cafe isn’t open that often

Madoc Lake non-electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: What a gem of a find! Only stayed one night on route home to Cumbria.Great large pitch, clean well laid out site. Staff very friendly. Quiet at night, perfect. And an added bonus of a swimming lake. The bar area looked really good although we didn't use it on this stay. Loved it, will definitely be back.

Disliked: Shower and toilet block could do with some improvement but otherwise nothing to dislike.

Madoc Lake fully-serviced hardstanding touring pitch (waterside)

Liked: Our favourite site. Stayed twice at Madoc lake now and we love the quiet and relaxing atmosphere. Pitches are a great size and the picnic table and fire pit are so handy.

Disliked: Facilities are ok but a few more toilets and showers would be good.

Madoc Lake fully-serviced hardstanding touring pitch (waterside)

Liked: Great pitch and fishing, showers will be great once finished.

Disliked: People walking through my pitch to get to toilet block and sitting at the picnic bench on my pitch to watch the paddle boarders - more than a little intrusive ! Not the sites fault just rude people

Madoc Lake fully-serviced hardstanding touring pitch (waterside)

Liked: We have been here numerous times as it’s one of our favourite places, absolutely stunning scenery the place is spotless the food on the bar is second to none and a great athmosphere! We cannot get my daughter out the lake on her kayak! However last night we encountered a large family with 3 large dogs running around off there leads running in peoples pitches jumping up on people, absolutely out of control my daughter had to leave the lake as they was running all around it and she was scared as the family was screaming at them but they was out of control!! When I asked them to put them on there leads like my own dog they took no notice a young family next to us packed up and went back to the caravan I think it needs checking this side a little more that the rules are being followed
