  • Peaceful site with a two-bedroom cabin near the Wales–England border
  • Alderford Lake watersports 10 minutes’ drive; Chirk Castle 35 minutes
  • Dog-friendly; well-equipped kitchen; sun lounger in the garden
A peaceful site surrounded by splendid Welsh countryside, Nook Cabin sits close to the border with England, a 15-minute drive from the Shropshire market town of Whitchurch. Fenn’s, Whixall & Bettisfield Mosses National Nature Reserve, with its wild peat bogs and heathland (not to mention thriving birdlife, including curlews and hen harriers), stretches just to the south. Accommodation is in (you guessed it) a cabin – a two-bedroom log cabin, to be precise. And a pretty well-equipped one, too. There’s a bathroom with a hot-water shower, plus a kitchen with a microwave oven, a kettle and a range of utensils, along with a table where you can gather the troops for family meals. If you’d rather head to the pub for a traditional dinner, the nearest one is about 10 minutes’ drive away, in Hanmer. Added bonus: after eating here, you can kickstart your digestion with a stroll on the banks of Hanmer Mere lake. Back at base, step outside and breathe in the clean forest air as you unwind on a sun lounger with a glass of wine. Active types can lace up their boots, put the dog on the lead and set off to explore the area. Within a 10-minute drive, you can reach the Llangollen branch of the Shropshire Union Canal, with its waterfront paths, fishing spots and canoe launches. If you’re into watersports, head to Alderford Lake (10 minutes) for an inflatable adventure course, in addition to paddleboard and canoe hire.

2 bedroom cabin

Liked Plenty to like about this place - peaceful, reasonably secluded and had all we needed. Beds were comfortable and warm, extra blankets available, outside area was well equipped with fire drum, barbecue and more than adequate seating. The WiFi worked well and the dog gave it her seal of approval. It was a cosy space with all the basics and more wellies than wedges, and I’d go back in a heartbeat

2 bedroom cabin

Liked Lovely experience overall.
Brian is very friendly and warm person. Cabin is well equipped and comfortable for a family with good cooking facilities. Pet friendly, our large breed dog enjoyed a lot as never had to put her on leash. Farm animals around are secured by electric fence. Location is good as well. Very calm surrounded by farms. Cabin itself is not insulated so might get very cold during colder weather but it's perfect for summer holidays. Pub and superstore is within 15 minutes drive.
Would definitely recommend and visit again.

Disliked Nothing other than you have to leave..

2 bedroom cabin

Liked We stayed here to visit the Eisteddfod in Wrecsam and everything was perfect!
The owner was lovely, really welcoming and friendly. The cabin was just perfect, it had everything we needed as well as lots of space for the kids to run around outside- they loved looking at the horses in the neighbouring field. We had a lovely meal at the Red Lion at Ellesmere, visited some great National Trust properties and enjoying running in the area too.

2 bedroom cabin

Liked How seclude it was.
Yes it's sort of at the end of his garden but you never feel like anyone else is near.

Cabin was cosy and comfortable.

There's dog friendly pubs within 5-10 minutes drive either way and a fantastic cafe just down the road.

Disliked Nothing really.

The road leading up is a bit all over the place but just go slow, sorted.

Can imagine it'd get quite cold once the temperature drops in autumn/winter

Local attractions

Inspired by and based on Tom Blofeld’s children’s books, the adventure grounds at BeWILDerwood Cheshire (15 minutes’ drive) include treehouses, rope bridges, zipwires and assorted timber structures in the middle of a lush forest. There are also picnic areas, plus organised activities throughout the year. Built in the late 13th century, National Trust - Chirk Castle (35 minutes) has elegant interiors hung with tapestries and paintings, plus displays of medieval weapons and other decorative objects. In the surrounding parkland, you might be able to spot birdlife including woodpeckers and kestrels, as well as a well-preserved stretch of Offa’s Dyke. High atop a green hill overlooking Llangollen is Castell Dinas Brân (40 minutes), which was built in the 1260s and destroyed less than 20 years later by the English. Take a stroll among its imposing ruins while taking in spectacular and far-reaching views of the Dee Valley.
