  • Small, quiet and family-friendly North Wales farm site near Wrexham
  • A 25-minute drive to Chester Zoo; an hour to Snowdonia National Park
  • Spacious dog-friendly pitches; shops, pubs and cafés 20 minutes’ walk
Fancy a foray to a peaceful site near Wrexham in North Wales? The pitches at Coxwood Farm are set on an acre of secluded farmland, surrounded by mature oak trees and securely fenced in away from the road. Quiet and rural this spot may well be, with spacious pitches and picnic benches tucked away under those sprawling trees, but it also puts guests in pole position for exploring Snowdonia National Park and the bright lights of Chester. Your dogs are welcome to join you here, but please bear in mind that this is a working farm so they must remain on leads at all times when around the pitches – for more of a chance to hare about there are plenty of footpaths directly accessed from the site, and the lane outside is pretty peaceful and safe for a quick doggy stroll. You can dig out local amenities – pubs, cafés and takeaways – in the villages of Marford and Gresford, both around 20 minutes’ walk. Going down the self-catering route? There’s an essentials shop for groceries in Marford, and supermarkets for bigger stocking-up expeditions in Wrexham or at Broughton Shopping Park (both 15 minutes’ drive). On the practical front, there’s running water and a single toilet and shower block on the pitches, with the grey waste facility tucked away behind that. Hardstand parking is also available for cars away from the pitches.

From the manager: Thanks for the review. We currently feel one toilet and shower is enough for only 5 pitches.

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: Lovely quiet site. We stayed on the way from Newcastle to North Wales, so this was a good base camp to set off from the following morning. We arrived in the dark but managed to find the pitch no problem, and found facilities useful & close to the pitch. Just a short one night stay, but was spot on!

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: Lovely quiet and remote location.

Disliked: Facilities were limited (no toilet roll or soap) and we were unable to make contact with the host upon our arrival.

From the manager: Thanks for your review. We don't offer a check-in service as we're a working farm but someone (usually me) will make every effort to welcome and say hello to new campers, Sorry if we missed you but you were only here 1 night and poor phone reception is out of our control, you could come and knock on the farmhouse which you drive straight past if you need something. The above goes for toilet paper/soap. Again we keep an eye on it daily so you must have been unlucky but a simple text msg or knock on the door and we'd sort it. We have just added a new wall-mounted soap dispenser/toilet roll holder to make life easier for ourselves and our guests. I'm not sure why you'd not recommend it to friends but come back yourself.

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch

Liked: Beautiful, quiet, peaceful site. Only small so no large groups. Beautiful surroundings. There is one shower/toilet room which is a struggle with the amount of people but it was lovely and clean and the shower was hot and powerful. The owner did say that due to the popularity of the site (new to this) they are adding more facilities. We will absolutely be back regardless, we had a wonderful time.

Disliked: Nothing!

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch

Liked: We had a lovely stay. Peaceful and pretty site. Perfect conditions for pitching tents - level ground with soft firm earth. I was worried about there being only one toilet but it wasn't an issue at all, even the first night we stayed when the site was full, because it is only a small site anyway. Would definitely stay here again.

Local attractions

Kids part of your holiday plans? Then it’s Chester Zoo (25 minutes’ drive) for you, with its big cats, keeper talks and animal-feeding sessions, before treating them to goodies at the Ice Cream Farm (half an hour). Wear them out on the wacky slides and rides at The Crocky Trail (25 minutes), and take care of any rainy days with a visit to Chester’s Storyhouse (20 minutes), where you can see blockbuster films and seasonal pantos. Active types can be in Snowdonia in an hour, for sporty adventures on hills, mountains and numerous lakes, as well as catching a few artificial waves on the surf lake at Adventure Parc Snowdonia (also an hour). For quieter sorts of Welsh escapes, the ivy-clad remains of photogenic Holt Castle (10 minutes) are well-worth discovering, and there are pretty walks alongside the River Dee nearby. The National Trust-owned Chirk Castle (25 minutes) was once a mighty medieval fortress and now has elaborate interiors stuffed with priceless antiques to tour, while at Erddig (20 minutes, also National Trust) you can wander spectacular formal water gardens.
