Looking to dive straight into Anglesey activities or prefer to chill? The choice is yours at The Hideaway Wild Camping Retreat, a pop-up site 10 minutes’ drive from Cemaes Bay in the north of the island. The bell tent has far-reaching views over the Welsh countryside, with cows, sheep and Pygmy goats as furry neighbours, as well as being fully equipped with you should need for a memorable getaway. Being within walking distance or a five-minute drive from the Isle of Anglesey Coastal Path, walkers can get geared up and be off yomping. If you’re not feeling quite so energetic, have a gentle game of swingball with the kids, or prep a picnic to share at vantage points across the site – and on clear days, you won’t even need to get out of your tent to see colourful sunrises and sunsets. This is a dog-friendly site, but the owners do ask that your four-legged friends be kept on their leads around the campsite because of the livestock. Chickens and ducks also free-range about the place and provide fresh eggs – which you can buy for breakfast – so you wouldn’t want any harm to come to them either. The site owners are on hand with advice on sightseeing, and can recommend some Anglesey ‘hidden gems’ if you’d care to look beyond the normal visitor hotspots. There is a small general shop in Cemaes Bay, five minutes’ drive away, and a wider selection of shops and amenities in Amlwch, 10 minutes' drive away.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: I liked the lovely location. The pitches are nicely spread out, even without stones. The path to the toilet and sink is shown by pretty lights at night time.

Disliked: I didn't like having to park the car in a separate area to the tent. This would be a problem when it's raining.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: We had a really lovely time and felt privileged to be some of the first guests Great location Queit site with only 6 pitches and lots of space between Friendly owners Eggs and jams available

Disliked: The only thing was that on a full bank holiday the toilet wasn't big enough full everyone Oh and watch out for the satnav taking you up a rocky road, much smoother from the A5025

Local attractions

Head down to Cemaes Bay (five minutes’ drive) with the kids, or look further afield for other beaches including Bull Bay (also 10 minutes, good for kayaking) and Trearddur Bay (half an hour) for swimming and rock pooling. Try surfing and paddleboarding from Rhosneigr’s sandy expanse (35 minutes), or sailing from pebbly Moelfre (25 minutes). Cemaes Bay is also where walkers pick up the Isle of Anglesey Coastal Path, from which you’ll pass peaceful Llanbadrig Church on its headland. For a short, kid-friendly hike, look at the Parys Mountain (20 minutes) trails around an historic copper mine. Newborough Forest (50 minutes) is another spot for introducing the kids to walking, with views over Eryri National Park, or you could have a wander to South Stack Lighthouse (40 minutes), standing high above the Irish Sea. Wildlife-spotters among you can head for Dingle Nature Reserve (25 minutes) on the River Cefni to see rare red squirrels in their conserved woodland habitat, or take a boat trip from Holyhead (half an hour) to The Skerries islets to see the colony of Arctic terns.
