  • Well maintained and secluded park with views of grassy fields
  • Less than five minutes’ drive to Valley and 10 minutes to Holyhead
  • Porth Trwyn beaches less than 15 minutes’ drive away
How does a peaceful hol in the very northern reaches of north Wales sound? If the answer’s an instant 'yes please', give Pencraig Campsite a go: it's in the Anglesey countryside on a smallholding next to a field full of ponies overlooking grassy green meadows. Pencraig Campsite has a good range of amenities, with modern toilets and showers plus a washing-up area, a coin-operated laundry, a small shop and a takeaway café. The sunset views are excellent from this site, creating a serene setting in which to stoke up the barbecue at the end of a day beachcombing around the lovely Isle of Anglesey. Shores within easy driving distance include Porth Trwyn and Church Bay (both 15 minutes); the latter has a café for filling up at as well as a small museum in an old thatched 17th-century cottage. For other eats, the local village of Valley is a five-minute drive from the site just off the island’s main coastal road with its pubs, takeaways, small shops and petrol station. A few bigger supermarkets are on the way to Holyhead less than 10 minutes’ drive away; come here for birdwatching too as it’s the gateway to scenic cliffside walks with the potential for puffin spotting at RSPB South Stack (20 minutes away). If you’ve brought a four-legged friend on the trip – as dogs are welcome at Pencraig Campsite – plenty of places for walkies are about, including around the colourful disused copper mine at Parys Mountain (half an hour away).

Liked: Shower block was really modern and clean. Campsite was very welcoming, we stayed over Easter and the owners put on an Easter Egg hunt for the children on Easter Sunday which was a lovely touch.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Impromptu Easter egg hunt that our boys absolutely loved. Really friendly staff. Lovely clean toilets and showers with hot water.

Disliked: Called to buy some wood and was told that it would be bought over but it never came. It was Easter Sunday though so understandable.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Great location with views of fields. Large pitch with water tap directly behind tent for easy access, especially convenient in bad weather! Campsite was small and well maintained, not too many pitches. Toilet and shower facilities brand new and always clean and warm, nice big shower cubicle with constant running water, no push buttons or charges for use.

Disliked: Washing up area had hot water which was great but was not under a cover and there was no light, we visited in very wet conditions and a little roof would have been nice. Energy saving lights in toilet and shower block switch off after approx. 10/15 minutes so lights went off whilst getting dressed after a shower, need to come out of cubicle to get sensor to register you for lights to come back on. Pitches get extremely water logged and muddy in bad weather but that’s just down to Mother Nature! Lots of road noise from main road.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: A lovely place to stay and visit, and price was very good. The views were fantastic and the area was quiet and peaceful. Would definitely recommend and will be visiting again this year.

Disliked: Couldn't get the TV to tune into Freeview channels and was stuck watching just BBC channels LOL!!! Not sure if it was due to the hills and not getting great reception. But that was the only thing.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Toilet and shower facilities are excellent. Bus stop outside the site to Holyhead. Very friendly and welcoming owner. Some seasonal caravans on site and everyone friendly. Good facilities just up the road (3 mins in the car) including pubs, a chippy and some shops.

Local attractions

Anglesey has numerous beaches to comb, including the quiet bay of Rhoscolyn (15 minutes' drive away) with calm, shallow water for paddling or kayaking and Traeth Llydan (20 minutes), a wide, sandy stretch of coastline. Llanddwyn Island is 45 minutes away – visit at low tide to reach it via the sand. For age-old history in between submerges in the sea, the Neolithic-era Barclodiad y Gawres burial chamber is 15 minutes’ drive away and the Bryn Celli Ddu Burial Chamber takes 25 minutes to reach for investigating Wales’ prehistoric history. Slightly more recent heritage can be had on tours of Beaumaris’ castle and old jail; the pretty seaside village is also tiptop for shopping in small independent boutiques and filling up in traditional pubs. Off Anglesey, about an hour and five minutes’ drive away, is the base of Wales’ biggest mountain, Snowdon. If your legs are feeling up to it, hike to the summit – or just take the train…
