  • Family-run touring park set in open Anglesey countryside
  • Just off the A55; Caernarfon and Beaumaris 20 minutes’ drive
  • Dog-friendly site with views of Snowdonia National Park
Stuck deciding between the mountains, the coast and the countryside? All three are easily accessed from Ael y Garnedd, a family-run touring park in Star, Anglesey. How so? Well, this site has a splendid selection of well-maintained, level pitches in pleasant grounds just off the A55, easily accessible from the Britannia Bridge and close to the Anglesey coastline. The pitches have the added bonus of spectacular views over the mountains of Snowdonia National Park (which is from 20 minutes’ drive away, by the way). Whether it's mountaineering in Snowdonia, rib rides and exploring the castle in Beaumaris (20 minutes), or lunch in Caernarfon (20 minutes), the site's central location is bound to come very much in handy. That’s what makes this place such a great base for family and dog-friendly holidays spent both on the island and mainland. Sandy beaches are close by too, and you'll be less than 30 minutes from the offerings at Benllech, Aberffraw, Rhosneigr and Ynys Llanddwyn, a haven for ramblers, rockpoolers and cyclists. With amenities like grey-waste disposal, toilets and showers all provided, as well as a laundry room, life on site is comfortable, and if you do need to venture out it won't take you long to find what you're looking for. The nearest pub is five minutes' drive, while Menai Bridge (10 minutes) has a large supermarket and an array of shops and restaurants.

Fully-serviced hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: Very tidy, orderly site. Loved the bits of Astro turf set into the turf edges (presumably for awnings) . Each pitch had a hook up and its own water supply! The cleanest toilets and showers I’ve ever used on a site and the same for the laundry room and washing up room. Very helpful owners, an issue with the hook up was sorted immediately! So quiet and a perfect place for exploring Anglesey. Will definitely stay again!

Disliked: Nothing!

Fully-serviced hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: Easy to find and I had been emailed the pitch number (and a map of the site) the day before so no need to wait to set up which was good as it was late and raining when we arrived. Facilities were spotless and showers were great as they had plenty of space to get dried and enough hooks to hang everything up. Very convenient for exploring Anglesey. I had thought it might be noisy so close to A55 but it didn’t keep us awake at all. Would definitely stay again if we return to this part of Wales.

Liked: Excellent, easy to find and well equipped campsite. Friendly and accommodating owners who were quick to switch the date of my stay when my son decided he wanted to return to Bangor Uni a couple of days earlier. It’s my 2nd stay and I will likely book again .

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Clean toilets

Disliked: Sharing a pitch when plenty availability Dog mess The massive extra charge for staying a few extra hours due to the storm and strong winds

From the manager: Further to the review submitted above we would like to challenge the comments made and clarify matters for prospective readers. Firstly, thank you for the positive comments about our toilet and washing facilities. The facilities are checked regularly and cleaned to a high standard, as is evident from the many positive comments left by customers in the past. Thankfully, the majority of our customers appreciate the effort that goes into maintaining these standards and respect the facilities. With regard to the sharing of the pitch - you had initially booked onto a grass pitch. Sadly, our grass pitches are not currently useable due to the heavy rainfall in recent weeks. I informed you of this 4 days prior to your arrival and suggested that you share a hard-standing pitch with your travelling companions for one evening only. This was to allow us to accommodate you safely for ONE EVENING, before allocating you to your own hard-standing pitch for the remainder of your stay AT NO EXTRA COST. You agreed to this arrangement with no concern raised at all. The 'plenty' (one)! available pitches had actually been reserved for other customers. The upgrade to a hard-standing pitch should have cost you an additional £35 each - however, this was waived under the circumstances as a gesture of goodwill. The 'massive extra charge' (£10) was charged as a consequence of your party arriving 3 hours prior to check-in and departing 4 hours after the check-out time. With regard to the dog mess, our premises are regularly inspected and in the event that dog mess is found on site it is dealt with immediately. I would also like to point out that dog owners are responsible for ensuring that any mess created by their dogs is cleaned up immediately as a courtesy to other customers. It is unhygienic and dog owners who allow such behaviour should know better. Customers who stumble across dog mess should report it to the site manager so that it can be dealt with. As much as we are disappointed to receive negative reviews from customers (which are thankfully very few and far between) the review you have left needs to be placed in the context of the circumstances that existed at the time of your visit. The comments you have left above are neither constructive nor accurate. Your comments will be taken on board and every effort will be made to improve the service we offer at Ael Y Garnedd. Your custom is greatly appreciated.

Local attractions

When you want to stay pretty local, make Menai Suspension Bridge (five minutes' drive) your first stop. The huge suspension bridge between Anglesey and mainland Wales is a sight to behold. Plas Cadnant Hidden Gardens (10 minutes) is rather interesting too, as a historic estate with peaceful gardens and tea rooms. Beaumaris (20 minutes) next? This stop is by the seaside, hence the gorgeous promenade, and the castle is also worth a visit. Caernarfon Castle (20 minutes) has a big ‘wow’ factor too – the huge palace-style fortress sits along the river Seiont and looks very grand. In Conwy (30 minutes), there’s another castle, as well as the harbour where boat tours take off across the coast. For those of you interested in getting to know legends and history around St David, visit the island of Ynys Llanddwyn (30 minutes). The scenery is just as great at Great Orme (45 minutes), a chunk of limestone land that juts out into the sea and has been named the ‘sea monster’ by the Vikings. Time for some adrenaline instead? Zip World Fforest (40 minutes) has a forest rollercoaster and zipwires or swings over the treetops.
