  • Quiet rural location with spectacular views to Snowdonia National Park
  • A 20-minute drive to Rhosneigr beach; 30 minutes to Beaumaris Castle
  • Peaceful site near to pubs and shops, surfing beaches and golf courses
What a spot for all you outdoor adventurers who fancy a very quiet, peaceful wild camping mini-break. The Old Castle Site may be in a peaceful and rural Anglesey location, but it’s also close to cycling trails, golf courses, surfing schools and sailing clubs, so there are heaps of ways to get out and about while you’re here. Nothing is really very far away on Anglesey, but at this site you’ve also got the added bonus that activities like climbing and ziplining in Snowdonia National Park are less than 40 minutes’ drive away – in fact you can peek out of your tent and see the mountains in the distance. The grass pitches are in an elevated position, all the better for you to take in these magnificent views. It's a very quiet site; no music or late-night noise is permitted The coast is designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and you'll have a wide choice of beaches too. Travelling with the kids? Head for bucket-and-spade adventures at Rhosneigr (20 minutes’ drive). Fancy a woodland walk with your swim? Try Traeth Llanddwyn (25 minutes), backed by pine forest and undulating dunes. As this is back-to-basics camping, facilities on site are minimal. Barbecues are allowed (bring your own) so head to the market town of Llangefni (10 minutes) to pick up essentials in a choice of supermarkets – and there are plenty of pubs, pizza places and takeaways if you’ve sworn off cooking for your holiday.

Liked: Stayed with my daughter (10 years old) for two nights. Fiona and her husband (I think his name was Pete) are lovely. Fiona is so warm and welcoming. What a lovely house they have. Amazing they have a little outbuilding with a toaster, microwave and kettle and a little fridge freezer, it has a table and chairs, proper light and electric socket so you can charge your devises properly and a few games too. Next time we go (yes we would go back, my daughter loved it) I will take any old games we don’t use any more. Some reviews have negative comments about toilets and showers but I’ve experienced a lot worse camping. I think it almost adds to the charm. It’s a lovely location, 20 -30 minutes from most places you’d want to visit in Anglesey. You can check in any time and there’s no rush to leave, a real bonus when leaving. We were between 2 lovely families from Leeds.

Disliked: Noisy folk that came on our last night, they camped down under the trees but the noise did travel. A lot of kids running around and playing right at our car and tent but didn’t cause any nuisance tbh, they were just kids being kids. And that’s me really having to think of finding something to fault, and that’s not the site’s fault.

Non-electric hardstanding and grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Location, owner was friendly, site was small and offered different types of pitches. I understand this is a pop up campsite, so well done to the owner for making it so welcoming.

Disliked: Facilities were very, very basic - one portaloo for the whole site (and there were 4 large families, with around a dozen kids of various ages plus around a dozen adults also on the site whilst I was there), two showers with nowhere to hang clothes and opening onto the field so difficult to maintain privacy. The campsite was noisy - I appreciate the owner can't control that during the day, but screaming (literally) hordes of kids running around everyone's tents up to 11pm was not in any way controlled by instructions about a curfew time for noise. Not a site to go to when wanting peace and quiet.

Non-electric hardstanding and grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: We have done a lot of camping over the last few months and have been compelled to say that this site is, bar far, the most welcoming, relaxing, idyllic and versatile that we have experienced. Fiona and Peter could not be better hosts. It's clear to see that they have every visitor's best interests at heart. The showers and toilets are rustic but this adds to the charm and adventure of the site. Couldn't be more happy with the experience. Can't wait to go back. Thank you

Non-electric hardstanding and grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Absolute gem of a campsite!! Stunning views from the fields. Yes the facilities are basic, but are clean and do the job they're meant for. (If you're camping you're not expecting the Hilton!!) 3 toilets across the site, 2 showers, (with plans to increase that number), a washing up area and hut with table and chairs microwave, toaster and kettle. Also has games and info on attractions in the area. Extremely child friendly site, but enough space to find a quieter area, one large field, one medium field with some hard standing and a lovely wooded area. If you're lucky you may see the family of red squirrels or hear the owls. The VERY best thing about this site though are the owners, nothing was too much trouble and they genuinely care about everyone's experience. We were sad to leave but plan to return as soon as possible, for many years to come! Fiona and Pete, we love you !!

Non-electric hardstanding and grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Lovely site set with views of Snowdon. Pop-up sure with truly lovely hosts, who couldn’t be more friendly. Quiet location, with space for our tent with porch. Reasonable amenities, warm shower and flushing toilet. Great location within travelling distance of the A55 and Rhosneignr.

Disliked: Showers could do with better lighting and a place to hang clothes/towel. However, host says they are upgrading

Local attractions

Anglesey may be mainly about outdoors fun and sports, but there’s plenty of culture to be found here too. Tour the imposing ruins of moated 13th-century Beaumaris Castle (30 minutes’ drive), or tour the gardens and arboretum at National Trust-owned Plas Newydd House and Gardens (20 minutes), overlooking the sparkling Menai Strait. Your kids will probably demand the beach, and there are several within 30 minutes’ drive, all with fine sand and clear waters. Should they ever tire of splashing in the sea, take them to meet the meerkats at Pili Palas Nature World or to see marine conservation in action at Anglesey Sea Zoo (both 20 minutes). Back over the Britannia Bridge in mainland Wales, you might like to head for the mazes and magic shows at GreenWood Family Park (30 minutes), or plan a scenic journey aboard a steam train along Llanberis Lake Railway (40 minutes).
