  • Peaceful Snowdonia site bordered by woodland and a river
  • A 20-minute drive from Capel Curig and half an hour from Conwy
  • Set on a 42-acre sheep farm; campfires allowed and logs sold on site
Hoping for some holidays close to the high Welsh peaks? Tan Aeldroch Farm is a sprawling Welsh sheep farm with green Gwynedd views right across Snowdonia National Park. This 42-acre site has a wild feel to it, although the grounds are always well maintained (courtesy of the flocks of live-in lawnmowers that you'll be sharing with). Bordered by the river Lledr on one side and woodland on the other, the farm has plenty of secluded spots, trees to climb and rocks to clamber over. Handily, though, it's within a couple of hundred yards of the A470, opening up many options for off-site jaunts (including trips to the sea, about half an hour's drive away). The farm's eco-conscious owners have been working to restore the natural balance of this part of the valley since 2003 – help them up by making sure that you leave no trace when settling down here. The facilities at Tan Aeldroch Farm are basic, but you can count on flushing loos and a standpipe. Getting chilly in the evening? Make your own heat by setting up a fire in one of the designated firepits (please bring your own wood). To keep things as peaceful as possible, don't use radios or stereos if hanging by at the pitches, ta. The nearest bar and food shop are in Dolwyddelan, a couple of villages down the main road (five minutes' drive). You can also catch a train here if arriving without a car and book a taxi to the site. The owners are present at the site during weekends, but may not be available midweek.

Liked: The campsite is incredible, the views are like something from a film and is one of the reasons why we chose this site from looking at everyone else’s reviews/pictures and it did not disappoint. Toilets had everything you needed, and showers are being built, our stay was only short so we freshened up by the river and brought own toiletries etc. Super friendly and helpful staff, and other campers were lovely! Already recommended to a ton of family and friends, as they’ve seen the pics and want in, definitely get booking for the summer months! We can’t wait to go back. Thank you for a lovely stay.

Liked: Lots of area to choose from with well maintained toilet amenities and drinking water. Looks like lots of work is going on to try and improve the drainage as well.

Disliked: Would be amazing with shower faculties which I think are on the way.

From the manager: Hello Janice So sorry you did not enjoy your stay. The weather has been so bad this spring, and over the winter. I have never known it to be so wet. we have put in an huge amount of work to drain the site and build firm foot paths to and from toilets. We are now reseeding the grass IN the late spring and summer, when the weather is better, all the inconveniences you experienced will be gone

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: On the river. Clean facilities.

Disliked: Younger host not very welcoming, almost seemed annoyed to help. Gate with difficult padlock to access campground along with false lock code provided on host door. Zero privacy even with limited campers on site.

From the manager: We are glad you enjoyed camping by the river, There are some special secluded pitches on the river bank We are a family run campsite with three generations contributing to the smooth running of the place... ages from 7 to 77. We thoroughly enjoy sharing our special location with our guests and enjoy meeting all the varied campers who come. You can usually expect a very warm welcome In order to ensure we only have good, pleasant campers we keep the entrance gate locked, the gate code posted on the Farm house door is correct. THe campsite is a large area, guest can choose to be close to others or in a secluded more private spot on their own . Anyone disturbed by inconsiderate behaviour by neighbours are encouraged to let us know. We are happy to neighbours who are being a nuisance. Fortunately it does 'nt happen often.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: The site was gorgeous with plenty of space between pitches(though this may be down to the time if year).

Disliked: Pathway to the toilets was in need for a little re-do but it was just about manageable in the lovely UK February weather.

Local attractions

Coming here to conquer Snowdon? Pen-Y-Pass car park is about half an hour's drive if you're ascending on foot, while the Llanberis station where you can pick up the Snowdon Mountain Railway is also well within range (35 minutes). Make sure to pack sensible clothing if heading out for a hike – any shorts and t-shirts you've brought along can be put to good use on the beach at Llandudno or Colwyn Bay (both 35 minutes). Up for a trip on the longest zipline this side of the equator? Then make for Zip World Fforest (10 minutes' drive), where there's also a kilometre-long rollercoaster that twists downhill through the trees. More adrenaline-fuelled action is to be had at Capel Curig (20 minutes), a peaceful mountain village that's home to the Plas-y-Brenin National Outdoor Centre. Something more sedate? Steer clear of hair-raising Snowdonia activities and instead head for gentler walks at Bodnant Garden (25 minutes) or Conwy Castle (30 minutes).
