Golden hour on site
Lledr valley vistas

  • Peaceful Snowdonia site bordered by woodland and a river
  • A 20-minute drive from Capel Curig and half an hour from Conwy
  • Set on a 42-acre sheep farm; campfires allowed and logs sold on site
Hoping for some holidays close to the high Welsh peaks? Tan Aeldroch Farm is a sprawling Welsh sheep farm with green Gwynedd views right across Snowdonia National Park. This 42-acre site has a wild feel to it, although the grounds are always well maintained (courtesy of the flocks of live-in lawnmowers that you'll be sharing with). Bordered by the river Lledr on one side and woodland on the other, the farm has plenty of secluded spots, trees to climb and rocks to clamber over. Handily, though, it's within a couple of hundred yards of the A470, opening up many options for off-site jaunts (including trips to the sea, about half an hour's drive away). The farm's eco-conscious owners have been working to restore the natural balance of this part of the valley since 2003 – help them up by making sure that you leave no trace when settling down here. The facilities at Tan Aeldroch Farm are basic, but you can count on flushing loos and a standpipe. Getting chilly in the evening? Make your own heat by setting up a fire in one of the designated firepits (please bring your own wood). To keep things as peaceful as possible, don't use radios or stereos if hanging by at the pitches, ta. The nearest bar and food shop are in Dolwyddelan, a couple of villages down the main road (five minutes' drive). You can also catch a train here if arriving without a car and book a taxi to the site. The owners are present at the site during weekends, but may not be available midweek.

What customers say

This back-to-basics campsite offers a peaceful, natural setting by a beautiful river, with spacious pitches and freedom to choose your spot. Visitors praise the friendly welcome, stunning scenery, and proximity to local walks and attractions. While facilities are basic, they are generally clean and adequate for short stays. Some guests noted midges and occasional noise, and the lack of showers was mentioned, though a new block is reportedly under construction. The site is ideal for those seeking a tranquil escape close to nature.

Non-electric hardstanding and grass pitch

Liked The location is just beautiful, surrounded by hills and forests on either side with walks and cycle routes in every direction. The river that runs through the site is both picturesque and a wonderful source of fun for all ages. The site itself is simple and rustic; it requires that you are prepared, especially if in a tent. Open fires are encouraged with an honesty scheme for logs and even marshmallows available from the kind and friendly owner.

Non-electric hardstanding and grass pitch

Liked Another brilliant stay. Scenic site, always very clean and the new showers are a brilliant addition. Lots of walks direct from camp. There’s the riverside walk to Dolwyddelan which I would highly recommend, and in the opposite direction there’s a walk through the woods and under the railway. For those that need it, I also had strong mobile service throughout the stay.
Falling asleep to the sound of the river and a lovely little owl singing their tune is pure magic.

Disliked Honestly nothing to note, this is a very well run site. Clean, friendly, and beautiful location.

Non-electric hardstanding and grass pitch

Liked The camp site is beautiful, we pitched up right next to the river, by a tree, so we had a beautiful view of the river and the forest opposite it.
We saw and heard plenty of wildlife which is perfect for me.
The river was shallow enough during our visit to paddle and bathe in.
You can pitch wherever you like, so you can choose your scenery and proximity to the facilities etc.
We are a mix aged couple, one of us middle aged, the other a little younger, and this was an ideal site for us. I have mobility issues but managed the track to the toilets etc, this might be a struggle for wheelchair users, but I walk with a stick, occasionally without, and the path was manageable.
There are basic toilets and showers to use, I didn't use the showers, but the toilets were clean and pleasant, and there were sinks and mirrors for use too.
There are designated fire use areas, with their own fire pits provided should you need one, and they request you only burn wood bought from them, which was priced reasonably.
The owner was friendly and helpful.
The site is very peaceful and idyllic, the ground is fairly even and flat in most parts, so caused no issues for us pitching our tent.

Disliked The downside to being able to pitch wherever you like is that you may end up with people pitching quite close to you, or you may pitch close to a spot that someone was using which happened to us when a couple in their camper returned, no fault of the camp site owner. But if there could be a way to mark out your "pitch" space that you would need to use, this would be great.

Disliked Very basic facilities for volume of people - with a very full campsite and only 2 toilets (male) it can become congested

People making no effort to be respectful of others in relation to noise

Non-electric hardstanding and grass pitch

Liked We visited the campsite after three years. Almost nothing had changed except that there were now showers. The lovely owner told us some interesting stories about the place. The location was perfect, just a few minutes' drive from the most interesting attractions in Snowdonia Park. And every day around 7 a.m., sheep passed by our tent. The sound of the river and the stars in the sky around the campfire. We will definitely be back.

Disliked Nothing

Ensuring the campsite is a peaceful retreat is really important to us

Local attractions

Coming here to conquer Snowdon? Pen-Y-Pass car park is about half an hour's drive if you're ascending on foot, while the Llanberis station where you can pick up the Snowdon Mountain Railway is also well within range (35 minutes). Make sure to pack sensible clothing if heading out for a hike – any shorts and t-shirts you've brought along can be put to good use on the beach at Llandudno or Colwyn Bay (both 35 minutes). Up for a trip on the longest zipline this side of the equator? Then make for Zip World Fforest (10 minutes' drive), where there's also a kilometre-long rollercoaster that twists downhill through the trees. More adrenaline-fuelled action is to be had at Capel Curig (20 minutes), a peaceful mountain village that's home to the Plas-y-Brenin National Outdoor Centre. Something more sedate? Steer clear of hair-raising Snowdonia activities and instead head for gentler walks at Bodnant Garden (25 minutes) or Conwy Castle (30 minutes).
