‘Don’t expect a swimming pool, a bar or a shop’ say the owners of Dolgamedd Caravan and Camping Park – this laidback Gwynedd site is a place that's all about the joy of no-frills stays, embracing the natural setting and soaking up the peace of its fabulous Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park location. Indeed there may be no pool, but this laidback family-run site has something that's arguably just as enticing, as it's on the banks of the Wnion river, with direct access to the river for fishing, paddles and swims if you like (chillier than a pool, perhaps, but still a whole lot of fun…) Guests have been coming here for many years, with several of them returning time and again for repeated doses of the peaceful atmosphere on site and the plethora of outdoor activities available in the local area. Dolgellau (10 minutes' drive) is a well-known hub for walkers and hikers, and there are plenty of options nearby for mountain bikers and climbers too. Getting out and about should be fairly straightforward, as the site is only a little way off the A494 and has a bus stop almost outside. The evening activity of choice on site is usually a quiet glass of wine and a barbecue or campfire by the river – and to keep that peaceful vibe going there's a no-music policy here, and a general request to preserve the peace (party types and large groups will need to look elsewhere for their accommodation). Although this site is no-frills in style, it does have a good collection of essential facilities for its guests – these include toilets, showers, wifi, a launderette, a shared fridge and freezer, a washing-up area and a chemical disposal point.

Liked What an amazing campsite. I stayed riverside and it was absolutely glorious. The whole vibe was so calm and peaceful. I had the river running right there, a picnic table and bench and a firepit. The facilities were super clean and the owners were really friendly and welcoming. I went on my own for a night before my sister joined me and I felt so comfortable. There were other females on their own here to. I didn’t use the wifi, I didn’t need to as the phone signal was very strong here. I will definitely be going back. Highly recommended!

Disliked Would have liked some directions to for the wild swimming but other campers happy to help.

Liked Good central location for Bala and Barmouth etc, loos and showers kept clean. Basic site but they don't claim to be anything else.

Disliked On our final day after heavy rain drainage was poor, had this been on day 1 it would have been an issue. We also had a new neighbour that pitched/parked literally 1m away from us, didn't make a fuss as we were leaving the next day.

Liked Very nice campsite, pitch straight next to the river in which you can cool in hot weather. Friendly and helpful owner. Nice facilities on the pitch, like campfire place prepared already and standing for disposable bbq, also with the picnic table.

Liked Lovely camp site, great location. Our pitch had a picnic table which made the holiday, saved us eating from just our chairs. Toilets clean and showers had constant hot water. Great location near the river. Would recommend.

Local attractions

This area is home to some of the most popular walking trails in Eryri/Snowdonia National Park, including the Torrent Walk and Precipice Walk (both trailheads are within 10 minutes' drive). Those of a more ambitious nature may like to tackle the Minffordd Path up Cadair Idris (15 minutes away) or the mountain bike paths at Coed-y-Brenin (20 minutes) while families and leisure cyclists try the riverside Mawddach Trail (10 minutes). Up the thrill levels again with an activity at the National White Water Centre (half an hour) or one of the adventures on offer at Zip World Llechwedd (40 minutes). All a bit too hair-raising? Opt instead to visit the Dyfi Osprey Project (half an hour) or take a stroll around the colourful village of Portmeirion (40 minutes). Taking to the coast is always an option, too – perhaps for some bird spotting at RSPB Mawddach Valley (10 minutes), some history at Harlech Castle (45 minutes) or a day on the beach at Barmouth (25 minutes).
