The river wnion

  • Peaceful and laidback no-frills site in Eryri/Snowdonia National Park
  • Dolgellau 10 minutes' drive; 15 minutes to the coast or Cadair Idris
  • On the banks of the Wnion river for fishing and wild swimming
‘Don’t expect a swimming pool, a bar or a shop’ say the owners of Dolgamedd Caravan and Camping Park – this laidback Gwynedd site is a place that's all about the joy of no-frills stays, embracing the natural setting and soaking up the peace of its fabulous Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park location. Indeed there may be no pool, but this laidback family-run site has something that's arguably just as enticing, as it's on the banks of the Wnion river, with direct access to the river for fishing, paddles and swims if you like (chillier than a pool, perhaps, but still a whole lot of fun…) Guests have been coming here for many years, with several of them returning time and again for repeated doses of the peaceful atmosphere on site and the plethora of outdoor activities available in the local area. Dolgellau (10 minutes' drive) is a well-known hub for walkers and hikers, and there are plenty of options nearby for mountain bikers and climbers too. Getting out and about should be fairly straightforward, as the site is only a little way off the A494 and has a bus stop almost outside. The evening activity of choice on site is usually a quiet glass of wine and a barbecue or campfire by the river – and to keep that peaceful vibe going there's a no-music policy here, and a general request to preserve the peace (party types and large groups will need to look elsewhere for their accommodation). Although this site is no-frills in style, it does have a good collection of essential facilities for its guests – these include toilets, showers, wifi, a launderette, a shared fridge and freezer, a washing-up area and a chemical disposal point.

Powered cement/asphalt and grass travel trailer campsite

Liked Good size pitch, showers and toilets clean. Relaxing vibe. Staff helpful when they were on site.

Disliked Could hear the traffic from the main road. Facilities functional but all a bit shabby. Many campers playing loud music.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: I'm so sorry about the loud music. We have signs warning people about music on site so not sure how this happened. Next time, let us know and we'll sort it out.

Powered grass tent or campervan campsite (riverside)

Liked The campsite was extremely clean well run and exactly as the photo showed. Would highly recommend this campsite as it is a small family run concern and everybody in the office was very helpful. Toilets were clean and well maintained. We had a lovely campsite next to the river and although we chose an extremely Hot weekend, we would recommend this campsite without any hesitation.

Disliked Chose the wrong weekend because it was during a heat wave and all the midges were out, but otherwise nothing to complain about

Powered grass tent or campervan campsite (riverside)

Liked Clean facilities, never got too busy whilst I was staying in early July (but I am an early riser). Showers auto turnoff after approx 30 seconds but just need button pressing to restart. Didn't require any money for showers. Was impressed to see a well equipped campers kitchen. Free to use freezer for ice boards. Also a laundry facility.
As we stayed in the Riverside field we could have a camp fire. Office was closed when we arrived but signs outside showed where our named pitch was, which made it very easy.

Disliked Could do with a proper picnic benches on all tent pitches - it tended to be 1 in every 2 pitches, with a simple one board bench for the others.
Would have preferred to park car beside tent- sign asked for it to be parked away from pitch. Not terribly far away though.
Wifi only available at facilities, and did have a habit of dropping out

Middle field powered grass campsite

Liked Great site , simple but functional , not a modern site but showers hot , loos clean etc. No shop as they prefer you to support local business for supplies etc , super market 3 miles away so easy. Great pitch by the river with space . Dont expect a party site as this is designed as a peaceful spot to chill out. Would go again as enjoyed the local area .

Powered grass tent or campervan campsite (riverside)

Liked Everything! Super chilled, I had a riverside pitch and no one walked in front of our tent the whole stay! I was a sole female camper with my dog and felt very safe, I was a lovely quiet camp side which is exactly what I wanted.

Disliked Coming home

Local attractions

This area is home to some of the most popular walking trails in Eryri/Snowdonia National Park, including the Torrent Walk and Precipice Walk (both trailheads are within 10 minutes' drive). Those of a more ambitious nature may like to tackle the Minffordd Path up Cadair Idris (15 minutes away) or the mountain bike paths at Coed-y-Brenin (20 minutes) while families and leisure cyclists try the riverside Mawddach Trail (10 minutes). Up the thrill levels again with an activity at the National White Water Centre (half an hour) or one of the adventures on offer at Zip World Llechwedd (40 minutes). All a bit too hair-raising? Opt instead to visit the Dyfi Osprey Project (half an hour) or take a stroll around the colourful village of Portmeirion (40 minutes). Taking to the coast is always an option, too – perhaps for some bird spotting at RSPB Mawddach Valley (10 minutes), some history at Harlech Castle (45 minutes) or a day on the beach at Barmouth (25 minutes).
