Simple grass tent pitch without electric

  • Spacious site a few minutes' drive from the Snowdonia mountains
  • A short drive from the coast
  • Covered picnic area, communal bbq, den building and woodland dog walk
This Snowdonia site is a beaut. And so say the generations who've returned to Riverside Camping near Caernarfon in Gywnedd season after season: you'd be hard pressed to pin down just the one reason why, but it'd probably have something to do with peaceful riverside pitches among lots of open space... And the friendly helpful team, and the many little additions like free wifi, an undercover picnic area, a volleyball and badminton court, and a mini grass football pitch… yes, that's several reasons, but after all, this site is a beaut. Riverside Camping is in a sheltered loop of the River Seiont that's proved most suitable for fishing, birdwatching, boating and paddling, and is surrounded by woodland for yet more holiday adventures (short woodland dog walks are accessible on the site). The site's setting is tiptop: a few minutes' drive from the mountains of Snowdonia, two miles from Caernarfon and less than six from the coast. Steely-blooded campers also use Riverside as a base for the Slateman Triathlon and Snowdon Race in Llanberis five miles away. Other thoughtful touches (there are many) are the kids' playground; pocket-money toys (and sweets, drinks, ice cream and tourist info) in reception; a mini playhouse and a colouring table, and undercover table tennis and pool to partake of on rainy days. The hot showers on site are free and include family and disabled facilities. Riverside Camping also has an on-site bistro, The Mill, serving meals using local ingredients, light lunches, snacks, wine, local ales and Welsh breakfasts including laver bread. The nearest shop is about a mile away and plenty of pubs, takeaways and restaurants are at nearby Caernarfon.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Loved the family feel and the space we had. Fab addition having the pub/restaurant on site.

Disliked Bathroom areas weren’t that clean and the warden cleared our kids from the park at 9pm rather than the advertised 10pm. Also, no electric points at all as expected in the bathroom area. Hairdryer there didn’t even work.

From the manager: Hi Rachael,

We're glad to hear you enjoyed your one night stay on pitch 32 beside the river. As you'll see from our response to Alex who was here over the same weekend, the Friday night was rather lively with parents not taking enough responsibility for their children behaving. Subsequently, Catherine (the owner) who was patrolling on Saturday night took the decision to close the park at 9:30pm to allow for a quieter evening. Nearby tents had also turned in early and with rain setting in, the park becomes quite hazardous. The rain also admittedly made maintaining the floors in the bathrooms spotless but our staff always strive to maintain our high standards that we set for ourselves and set about attending the floors as often as they could.

We hope to see you again soon and hopefully for longer next time round!

Kind regards,
The Riverside Team

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Great location on the river with accessible points to get in. Large pitches not too close to others.

Not far from town/shops etc

From the manager: Thanks for your lovely review. We loved meeting Wilbur the cockapoo and your family. Glad you enjoyed your stay last weekend on pitch 33, it's certainly a nice spot by the river. We hope to see you guys again soon.

Electric optional grass tent, touring caravan or trailer tent pitch

Liked Site was lovely
Staff very friendly
Facilites (shower/toilets) are in good condition and cleaned reguarly

Disliked Noise - Friday night music was playing past 10pm
kids still running around and playing loudly gone 11pm

From the manager: Hi Alex,

It was lovely to have you on pitch 15 over a recent weekend. We are glad you enjoyed your stay in part and we'll pass on the compliments to our staff.

We were sorry and upset to hear about the noise on site the Friday night. We patrol the site until 10pm on busy weekends to ask for people to lower the noise and it's a shame a minority of your fellow campers didn't respect our noise rules. Their names were noted and will be held against any potential future bookings. As a consequence, we acted upon feedback first thing Saturday morning and issued an email to all as a reminder. Catherine also opted to ask kids to return to their tents at an earlier time of 9:30pm on the Saturday during her patrol of the site and hopefully you'll have noticed it was quieter, just how we hope it to be every evening.

We hope you'll reconsider staying with us again and we hope to see you some time in the future.

Kind regards,
The Riverside Team

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Great quiet site

Disliked Intermitent operation of hand drier in toilet block.
Hair drier not working.
It would be nice to have a drinks machine that was available outside of reception hours.

From the manager: Hi Steven
Thankyou for your review
It was lovely to welcome you a few weeks ago- sorry we did not see you a lot after check in as we think you were competing in the UTS competition. We’re glad you enjoyed the peace & quiet of Riverside.
I checked all the hairdryers after reading your review & all are working - there is a switch on the housing which has to be on - easy to overlook. Admittedly the hand drier in the men’s seems to have a mind of its own on occasion . Whenever we put our hands under to show someone it works!!
Our coffee machine is not an enclosed vending type machine so has the be located in reception, The Mill bistro also does take outs when they are open. Hope this helps answer some of the above
We hope to see you next year for the UTS again
Many thanks

From the manager: Hi Chris
Thankyou for your review
We’re so glad you enjoyed your stay in June. Firepit hire , hot showers & the river are just 3 of the things that draw campers back to riverside! Nothing better than sitting by the river round a firepit once the nights draw in.
We hope to see you again soon
Many thanks

Electric optional grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked We had an amazing time at Riverside Camping! The playground in the center was perfect, allowing us to watch our kids play and make new friends while we relaxed. The river was ideal for dog walks and fun water activities for the kids—pure joy!
The on-site restaurant was cozy, and the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. Renting a firepit for just £4 added to our evenings, and paying for electricity was simple and affordable—heated blankets and phone chargers ran all night for just 33 pence!
Without a doubt, we’ll be coming back. Riverside Camping offers the perfect mix of nature, fun, and relaxation. Highly recommended!

Great site with clean facilities, friendly staff and level pitches.

Electric optional hardstanding touring pitch (deluxe, TV aerial)

Liked It was extremely quiet when we visited (Sunday/Monday) and we were allocated a pitch next to the river. Pitches were large and we had metered electric and water on our pitch. Toilets and showers were clean.
Staff were very helpful and friendly.

Disliked The onsite bistro/restaurant was shut from 5pm on Sunday till Wednesday so we took a bus into Caernarfon to eat on Monday.

Local attractions

There's simply stacks to do around here as well as Snowdonia mountains walks and climbs, like the beaches and coastline of the (also beaut) Isle of Anglesey and the Llŷn Peninsula, nature spotting, getting active on land or water, or investigating centuries' worth of Welsh history at nearby castles, museums and mines. The best known attraction of ancient and royal Caernarfon, a couple of miles from Riverside Camping, is ancient and strapping Caernarfon Castle, but you should/must also make time for its old and lovely pubs or for crabbing from the harbour walls; wherever you end up in this scenic city, take many photos. North Wales is steam railway country, so if you don't fancy getting to Snowdon's summit (Copa'r Wyddfa) under your own steam, take the Snowdon Mountain Railway to the peak instead from its base at Llanberis. Alternatively, the Welsh Highland Railway puffs the 25 miles from Caernarfon to Porthmadog; you should make many pub pitstops along the way.
