  • Peaceful, scenic North Wales site on the edge of Eryri (Snowdonia)
  • A 10-minute drive to Caernarfon Castle; 20 to Zip World Penrhyn Quarry
  • Table tennis, skittles and pool on site, plus 20 acres to explore
With a magical setting overlooking Eryri (Snowdonia) hills, Rhyd y Galen is a peaceful caravan and camping park in rural North Wales. Fancy exploring the mountains of Eryri (Snowdonia), the beautiful North Wales coastline and the Isle of Anglesey? Then this is your place. For your ease, access to the grass camping pitches is via tarmac roads. Generous in size and fully serviced, they come with a whole host of facilities, from a spotless shower block, well lit at night for your convenience and complete with hair dryers to keep you looking your best, to a family-friendly baby-changing unit and a laundry. On hand are 20 acres of land for families (and any canine pals) wanting to be out walking, playing and exploring, and if the kids should get restless, keep them entertained with games of table tennis, table football, skittles or pool. If you need to stock up on groceries, there are several supermarkets in Caernarfon (10 minutes’ drive), and if you fancy making a night of it in the town’s pubs and restaurants, ditch the car and jump in a local taxi.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Facilities - high pressure hot showers. Very clean, heater and hair dryer too. Clean toilets and other services I did not use. Staff - friendly and helpful, showed full range of services and provided map and details of the site. Large tent only field. Perfect for my solo camping night where I had it to myself. Close to Caernarfon by car.

Disliked: Distance between tent site and showers/toilets

Fully-serviced grass tent pitch

Liked: Everything! The camp site is so clean and so well maintained. The staff are beyond helpful, very friendly and even offered to take my rubbish for me. The site is so quiet even when there are lots of people staying. It’s the perfect mix of nature and modern amenities like the shower blocks which were spotless. They even had a hairdryer. It’s the little things that make such a difference. The location is also great, right in the middle of nowhere but with so many great attractions within a short driving distance. I’d highly recommend this site to anybody looking at it! 🙂

Fully-serviced hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Great location, very peaceful. Amazing toilet/ shower facilities. Very nice play room for grown-ups and kids. Very good WiFi by the pitch.

Disliked: Paying extra for an awning that we couldn't use as we were allocated a pitch at the bottom of the site where all the rain was draining onto our pitch.

From the manager: Thank you for sharing your experience with us! We're thrilled that you enjoyed the peaceful location, excellent facilities, and the amenities for both adults and kids. We apologise for the inconvenience with the allocated pitch and the issue with the awning. We hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back for a more enjoyable stay.

Fully-serviced hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Beautiful location. Water AND electric at every pitch. Shower block beautifully done, warm and clean. Quiet, smooth tarmac road running around whole site.

Disliked: I felt that only 2 toilets and 2 showers for the number of pitches was too few.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your feedback! We're thrilled that you enjoyed our beautiful location and the convenience of water and electric on your pitch. It's great to hear that you found our shower block warm and clean. We appreciate your thoughts on the toilet and shower facilities, but we do have 13 toilets, 2 urinals and 9 showers at Rhyd y Galen. We hope to welcome you back for another enjoyable stay soon!

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Good location, clean showers with plenty of pressure and hot water, helpful staff & stunning views of the mountains.

Disliked: Pitch was expensive considering it was without electric hookup. Waterlogged field also caused issues but the wardens helped us out and relocated us to a drier spot.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. We're glad to hear that you enjoyed the good location, clean showers, helpful staff, and stunning mountain views. However, we're sorry to hear about the issues you encountered with the pitch due to the extremely wet weather leading up to Easter. We appreciate your patience and understanding as our wardens assisted you and relocated you to a drier spot. Your feedback is valuable, and we'll take it into account as we strive to improve our services and facilities. We hope you'll consider staying with us again in the future.

Liked: Nice view

Disliked: Pitches very mucky.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your review. After one of the wettest March on record, the ground was wet. Due to some customers driving over the pitches instead of the roads, some pitches did get mucky. I'm pleased to say that the ground has dried out now and the pitches reinstated and in excellent condition.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Lovely facilities, really good showers! staff were friendly and helpful. Especially throughout the wet Easter weekend. made extra efforts to ensure vans could get on and off camping field. Close to tourist attractions as they are only a short drive away. Beautiful settings and dog friendly.

Disliked: As every campsite, I would of liked a closer toilet. But that is me just nip picking as we coped in our campervan.

Local attractions

Standing where the Afont Seiont river meets the Menai Strait, Caernarfon Castle (10 minutes’ drive) is a forbidding medieval fortress and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Perhaps best known as the place where Prince Charles was invested in 1969, it also houses the Royal Welch Fusiliers Museum, which explores the history of this infantry regiment. If you’re in a ‘feel the fear, but do it anyway’ mood, you can head to Zip World Penrhyn Quarry (20 minutes), where the Velocity 2 zipline stretches across a lake, allowing you to travel at speeds of up to 100mph. If you are brave enough to keep your eyes open during your flight, you can also take in splendid views of Eryri (Snowdonia). For something less hair-raising, Portmeirion (40 minutes) is a village featuring Italian-inspired pastel-coloured buildings and lush sub-tropical vegetation. Grab an ice cream from Italian gelateria Caffi’r Angel, and take a leisurely stroll through the quaint streets or along the sandy beach on the Afon Dwyryd estuary.
