General

  • On the shores of Cardigan Bay
  • Owned by the same family for over 50 years
  • Indoor and outdoor pools, playground, bar and restaurant

Ah, Barmouth. As one William Wordsworth once pointed out, the location of this Gwynedd seaside town is pretty perfect, between Welsh mountains and the sea and with the somewhat spectacular Mawddach estuary at one end of its beach. (And as he was a Famous Poet and all, we reckon he knew of what he penned.)

Also pretty aware of the area are the team at Sunnysands Caravan Park, who've been running their site close to Barmouth for over 50 years. They've set it up to cater for all sorts, whether you're looking for a romantic couples' break, an active family hol or a relaxing week or two in Wales: we think the word 'beaches' is what connects the lot.

Sunnysands is fronted by miles of sandy beach and the calm waters of Cardigan Bay, backed by the mountains of Snowdon and Cadir, and is in the scenic Snowdonia National Park. Its excellent range of facilities include indoor and outdoor pools, a playground, a bar and a restaurant; practicalities are covered by the site launderette, shop and loo and shower block.

Seaside shops, pubs, cafés, fish and chip shops and Barmouth harbour are all a few minutes' drive away.

Location was fairly good to explore that area of Wales.

    Barmouth itself is lovely.

    Disliked:

First few days ruined by heavy rain that flooded the touring area. We woke up to standing water approx 3/4 inches off the caravan floor!! It appeared to be caused by inadequate drainage. Eventually dried out and following a few visits to reception managed to secure a move to a vacant static pitch. Still never good having to setup twice in less than 24 hours.

The music in the on-site club was basically the Cha Cha slide on repeat for 4 hours a night. Generally needs a re-vamp inside, very dated. It is the 21st Century!

WIFI.... ..... ...... sorry you cant connect to that unless your sat outside reception.

Poor TV reception (Not exactly the sites fault to be fair)

The site entrance is interesting to say the least, head for heights required.

Touring waste disposal miles away, also seemed to be just pouring down the disabled toilet, no actual disposal point.

Swimming Pool gets very very .... very busy.

Again not the sites fault but the tide times coupled with the beach location meant you were very restricted to certain times spent on the beach maybe 2-3PM for a few hours...

We loved the location of this site right by the sea and the beach is very long and beautiful. Easy access from the site to the beach.
It's a pet friendly site and we could take our dogs onto the beach too.
We stayed in the touring caravan/ Motorhome part with electric hook up. Only one other caravan there in October.
There is a great club house/ bar with friendly staff, we watched the sunset as we had a drink.
There is a great fish and chip shop there too which was very good.

    Disliked:

Too many static caravans there, hundreds of them. Very scary high narrow bridge over the railway line to access the site. We only just squeezed through with our Motorhome.
Very poorly stocked shop for such a big site.

Good location but access to the site is over a narrow bridge which would be a bit tricky with a wide caravan or motorhome. The staff were very friendly, there was a good shop and chippy. The club and Entertainment was good for this time of year with a large patio and smoking area overlooking the sea. Would be great in warm weather.

    Disliked:

The weather and the narrow bridge.

From the manager...

Thank you for taking the time to review our Park and for your positive comments.
We are very pleased to hear that you enjoyed your stay and were happy with all the facilities we offer. Unfortunately we can't control the weather but as you say, it is even better when the weather is good. A lot of our guests find the narrow bridge daunting for the first time but everything does come on to the Park over it, even the static caravans. We hope that we will be able to welcome you back to Sunnysands sometime in the future and are sure you will find the bridge easier second time around.

From the manager...

Thank you for taking the time to review our Park and for the positive feedback. We have had some issues with flooding this Season which has resulted in a pretty boggy field but we will be making some improvements over the closed period ready for next year. We are pleased to know that you enjoyed your stay despite the weather and hope to welcome you to Sunnysands again if you decide to return some time in the future.

The chip shop was absolutely brilliant the food was lovely and the staff were fantastic and the Little Shop was perfect that's about it

    Disliked:

When we arrived we checked at the reception to be told we was plot 10 but there was somebody on there already and that we couldn't get on there till 11whitch was fine as we had got there early but the people that was on there haven't even started to pack away by 12:30 they started packing we went to the reception to and told them that the people had not gone yet she just shoved her shoulders and said there's nothing she could do they Should Have Been Gone by 11. There were other slots empty so we asked if we could have one of them so we could get set up she said no but by 1:30 we had enough .They never went till 230. we was so fed up because the people still haven't gone so we went back to the reception to be told to go on another plot why couldn't she tell us to do that in the first place. we was told that the place where you empty the toilet had broken and to use the men's toilets which is disgusting and that it's been broken for weeks. The ground was soaking wet and when we finally got to set the caravan and awning up. when we put the awning up and we put the ground sheet down the water came throw the ground sheet and we were standing in water. we went back to reception and she said that it had flooded last week because the tide was high. we asked if we could go on a hard standing as I'm disabled and she said no she was not very helpful and ignorant as if she didn't want to know the best thing about the holiday was the food at the chip shop was excellent and the beach beautiful but Sunnysands is very run down and not looked after at all and they say the toilets are cleaned every day which is rubbish they were disgusting the showers were too hot as they had no temperature control bottom to alter then we never saw anybody all holiday to check if everything was ok on the site no security and their customer service is diabolical so we'll definitely won't be going there again when we first got there people were actually coming up to us and telling us not to stay as if you need anything they are not interested in helping you

From the manager...

Thank you for taking the time to review our Park and we are disappointed to hear that you did not enjoy your week with us. We give 11 am as the check in time as an earlier arrival time would clash with our mass check out from the statics on a Saturday morning which ends at about that time. As you arrived just after 9 am you would have found Reception extremely busy for the next two hours. As we had experienced bad flooding on the field the previous week, the person on your allocated pitch was probably not having the easiest time to get packed up and you did inform us that he was attempting to do so. Again, due to the flood, we had blocked off about eight of the 26 pitches due to them being extremely boggy so it was not suggested that you should pitch up on one of those. When you visited Reception again we agreed that you should go on one of those pitches as your annoyance with the other customer was made obvious. Nobody recalls your request for a hard standing pitch and we had used about half a dozen hard standing pitches the previous week so that option would have been open. With regard to the toilet/shower block, it is cleaned more than once a day and if you had popped in to Reception and informed us that the showers were too hot we would have had the temperature turned down for you as we know that they are very sensitive. We received some very fair comments from other customers who were on the touring field the same week as we do try our best to make the customers visits enjoyable but we do understand that we can't please everybody all of the time. As far as we are aware you didn't mention any of the issues when you left Sunnysands at the end of the week.

Good value enough for the kids to do kids bottles of pop in the club 70p plenty of choise behind the bar and not silly priced the staff were a good laugh and the kids shows kept them happy plenty seating inside outside or the over 18s side site was clean swimming pool went down well when the rain came shop well stocked and nice and close to beach no complaints

    Disliked:

Toilets and showers are not too close field was very soft but in fairness it did rain hard and the site did help any one that got stuck

From the manager...

Thank you for taking the time to review our Park and for your very positive feedback. We are pleased that you enjoyed your week at Sunnysands and that the children enjoyed the entertainment and the swimming pool. The field was very soft due to heavy rainfall the previous week but that, fortunately, didn't seem to dampen your spirits or spoil your holiday. We have taken on board your comment regarding the toilet/shower block and we will be making some improvements ready for next Season. We look forward to welcoming you back if you decide to return to Sunnysands.

Excellent location right on the beach front.
Excellent chip shop, used it several times during our stay which we enjoyed every time, very reasonable prices and big portions!
Shop on site for everyday essentials, friendly staff and reasonable prices.
Swimming pool was a good size and also had a smaller pool for our younger children too. Changing rooms and toilets were kept nice and clean.
Lovely food in the onsite cafe though was a bit pricey.

    Disliked:

Touring toilets and showers were cleaned 3 times a day which is adequate, although some residents did abuse them and left them in a dirty state after themselves, nothing a bit of personal hygiene wouldn't fix but no reflection
    on Sunnysands house keeping.
    Basic personal facilities but functional.

From the manager...

Thank you for taking the time to review our Park and for your helpful feedback. We will be looking at ways to improve our facilities for the coming Season, in particular the toilets and showers. We are pleased to know that you enjoyed your stay with us and that you would recommend us to others.
