Ah, Barmouth. As one William Wordsworth once pointed out, the location of this Gwynedd seaside town is pretty perfect, between Welsh mountains and the sea and with the somewhat spectacular Mawddach estuary at one end of its beach. (And as he was a Famous Poet and all, we reckon he knew of what he penned.) Also pretty aware of the area are the team at Sunnysands Caravan Park, who've been running their site close to Barmouth for over 50 years. They've set it up to cater for all sorts, whether you're looking for a romantic couples' break, an active family hol or a relaxing week or two in Wales: we think the word 'beaches' is what connects the lot. Sunnysands is fronted by miles of sandy beach and the calm waters of Cardigan Bay, backed by the mountains of Snowdon and Cadir, and is in the scenic Snowdonia National Park. Its excellent range of facilities include indoor and outdoor pools, a playground, a bar and a restaurant; practicalities are covered by the site launderette, shop and loo and shower block. Seaside shops, pubs, cafés, fish and chip shops and Barmouth harbour are all a few minutes' drive away.

We don't really need to tell you what a glorious area of Wales Cardigan Bay and Snowdonia National Park is, so we'll type swiftly on to what you can do around Sunnysands Caravan Park and among the landscapes, lakes and waterfalls of north Wales instead... Get to Barmouth first for its spectacular beach, surf waves, the Mawddach estuary, Barmouth harbour and walks and cycle paths from Barmouth to Dolgellau. Fairbourne five miles from base is another top spot in the region, with over two miles of beach, many a rockpool and quite a bit of windsurfing. You could also hike up to the Snowdon summit (eek) or get the mountain railway (better) for views of the highly spectacular sort; explore around the sizable Cregennan Lakes or the waterfalls of Arthog and Friog, or get subterranean down at King Arthur’s Labyrinth at the Corris Craft Centre in Machynlleth.
