Popcorn Camping Bethesda: River by the campsite

General

  • Family campsite with level grass pitches, near Bangor in North Wales
  • A 15-minute drive to both Snowdonia National Park and Anglesey
  • Well-equipped rugby club site with firepit hire and mountain views

Tucked in between the island of Anglesey and Snowdonia National Park, family-friendly Popcorn Camping Bethesda is in some of North Wales’s wildest mountain scenery. A river borders the rural camping field, which is surrounded by woodland and has rugged peaks as a backdrop.

A cycling and walking path links Bethesda with Porth Penrhyn on the coast (15 minutes’ drive), and the sandy beach in Anglesey’s Red Wharf Bay is just 25 minutes across the Britannia Bridge from the campsite. At 15 minutes away, Bangor’s the best place to pick up essential supplies for your mini break, with plenty of supermarkets for picking up bits and pieces, as well as pubs with Menai Strait views and takeaways.

The flat and well-maintained grass pitches are on the local rugby club’s training field, with facilities provided by the clubhouse, so there are proper loos and hot showers too.

A few site rules: only one car allowed per pitch, with parking in the designated car park. Dogs are very welcome but must be kept on a lead at all times and are not allowed in the clubhouse. Firepits (can be hired) and barbecues are allowed next to your tent, but they must be off the ground – you can buy wood on site, and grass protection boards are provided for free. It’s quiet time from 10.30pm until 8am, so no loud music overnight please.

Please note

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

Group bookings of 5 or more adults are not permitted (couples and immediate family members excepted).

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

No cars/motorbikes by the pitch/unit. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

Site was nice and quiet with beautiful views. Facilities were clean and available all the time. Didn’t use the bar as we had our dog with us but could hear the entertainment and everyone having a good time. Very close to local attractions we spent our time out and exploring. I cannot wait to come back and bring my little boy he will love it!

The friendly atmosphere was nice. The staff were always interested in how your day out went. The toilets were good. Watched local side football match on the Tuesday night which was a bonus. Ground very flat and well maintained. Plenty of space. No traffic noise to speak of.

    Disliked:

Bar was only open at weekends and shut at 5 on Sunday evening. Showers not great but usable.

From the manager...

Ian,

Good review thanks,

I think for next year we have some thinks that we need to improve and constructive comments such as yours will help us to get better.

We are looking to have the bar open more next year for longer hours and will be looking how we can make the showers better.

Look forward to your return

Fantastic site. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. Great access to surrounding places. We enjoyed our daily splash in the river ogwen and little walks in the evening. Exploring the 18th century church/graveyard ruins just to the side of the site was also epic. We will definitely return next year.

Thoroughly enjoyed our 3 night stay under the stars! The mountain view is fabulous and the facilities here are great, this was our second camping experience and the last had a single portaloo, by comparison Popcorn had great toilets, great showers with hot water, toilets always had toilet roll and there was always fresh hand-wash and loads of paper towels, access to drinking water and outside sinks for washing up with lashings of hot water, which was a massive bonus. Special mention for the lady who runs the arrivals tent, she was so happy and bubbly and a pleasure to deal with, she even gave my son a crab net and bucket, she's there all day with everything you could need, wheel barrows to ferry your stuff to your tent, fire pit, wood etc. The campsite itself is set next to a lovely river which you can access along the footpath around the outside, makes for some fabulous photos!! All in all a brilliant stay which I would totally recommend, my 8 year old loved it.

Local attractions

Daredevil types should head for the go-karts and zipwires at Zip World Penrhyn Quarry (five minutes’ drive), where you can fly an adrenaline-inducing 500m above the lake in a former slate quarry. As well as plenty of easy walking routes for families, Snowdonia National Park (15 minutes) offers a packed itinerary of extreme outdoorsy activities, from climbing and mountain biking to white-water rafting and canyoning,

More sedate pursuits in these parts include castle ruins to explore at Dolbadarn (25 minutes) and seaside Harlech (one hour 10 minutes), as well as the colourful streets and eccentric buildings of Portmeirion (one hour), a folly built in Italianate style in the 1920s.

Of course Anglesey (15 minutes) has much to offer too. You can discover beaches and rugged coves on coastline drives, sample local whites on a winery tour, and have a mosey around historic Beaumaris (25 minutes), with its medieval castle and bracing walks along the Victorian pier.
