On the south coast of Gwynedd’s Llŷn Peninsula, Tyn y Mur is a top spot for a holiday in Wales. Not only is it just a five-minute drive (or a 25-minute walk) from the village of Abersoch and its sandy beach (a sheltered, family-friendly stretch on Bae Ceredigion); it also has splendid sea views, sitting as it does on top of a gentle hill. Amenities on site include a communal fridge freezer (where you can store your foodstuffs, sourced in Abersoch or in the convenience store in nearby Llangian); a well-maintained bathroom block (including wheelchair-accessible showers); washing-up stations and a launderette. That’s the parents’ practical needs met, but what about the children? Well, while you sort out the barbecue, they can keep busy in the playground, with sliding and climbing structures, or kicking a ball around the football pitch. When it’s time to venture beyond the site, there are plenty of things to do, starting with water-based activities (from swimming to paddleboarding) in Abersoch. Alternatively, head to Porth Neigwl (10 minutes’ drive), which translates as Hell’s Mouth. Strong currents make this beach unsuitable for swimming (especially for children), but keen surfers can often be spotted negotiating large waves here. Golfers find their way to the 18-hole Abersoch Golf Club (10 minutes), perched above the bay, and hikers have the entire Llŷn Peninsula to explore, either along the Wales Coast Path or by heading inland to places like Garnfadryn (10 minutes), a mountain topped by an Iron Age hillfort.

Local attractions

When the sea is too rough, the kids can still have a paddle and a splasharound at Glasfryn Parc (25 minutes), with its floating inflatable adventure course, paddleboarding and kayaking, plus coarse fishing. Outside of the water, the site has go-karting, archery and a miniature golf course. On your way to Caernarfon (45 minutes), take a wee detour and stop at the Inigo Jones Slate Works for a primer into North Wales’s slate industry; or at the Airworld Aviation Museum, which displays historic aircraft in a former RAF hangar. Caernarfon itself is renowned for its well-preserved waterfront castle, once the site of the Prince of Wales’s investiture ceremony. In Eryri National Park (Snowdonia) (an hour), drive to the Cwmorthin Waterfall, which tumbles down a sheer slate wall; ride the heritage Ffestiniog Railway; or visit Zip World Llechwedd, with an atmospheric adventure course deep into an underground cavern.
