  • Well-maintained family-run north Wales pub site by the river Alwen
  • In Llanfihangel Glyn Myfyr; edge of Snowdonia 15 minutes' drive
  • Alpaca walks and feeding on site; river fishing permitted
Originally a drovers' inn, The Crown Inn is a handsome Grade II-listed pub sitting in a peaceful position by the river Alwen in the pretty North Wales village of Llanfihangel Glyn Myfyr. Lying just behind the pub and skirted by ancient woodland, the pub's laidback camping area has easy access to forest trails, fishing on the riverbank and drinks in the bar. Access to The Crown Inn and Campsite is via a ford crossing that crosses the river – an exciting and intrepid journey that's sure to hold particular appeal for younger guests. A short wander away, there's a small waterfall that cascades down from the top of the woods into the river below – keep an eye out for fairies around here, as they're known to hang around in the area by the wooden bridge… Facilities here consist of well-maintained compost toilets and a washing-up area on site. There's access to The Crown Inn's bar and restaurant, which serve up good food and drinks throughout the week. Looking for things to do during your down-time? Relax by the riverbank, try a spot of catch-and-return fishing in the Alwen or fix yourself a firepit. You can also book some time at the site's private alpaca paddock to feed The Crown Inn's friendly boys, or sign up to an alpaca walk through the surrounding countryside with a woolly companion by your side.

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch (small, two person)

Liked: Immaculate and peaceful campsite set along a river and surrounded by breathtaking countryside.
We have visited twice now and will definitely be back again.
The hosts are so friendly and helpful and go out of their way to make you feel welcome.
We stayed on one of the four small tent pitches by the beer garden right beside the river. It's a beautiful spot and conveniently located close by the toilets, water tap and pub! Larger tents use the field directly across the road.
The toilets are composting toilets which are always clean and odour free...and I mean odour free! There is a hand washing sink and larger washing up sink in the toilet shed.
This campsite is run with peace and relaxation in mind. No loud music or large parties of people. Just couples, friends and families out to enjoy the beautiful nature on offer and some relaxation.
Children (and adults alike!) love the river. It's nice to see people in the shallow water paddling and having fun. There is a ford that you drive across to get into the campsite and many people like to paddle back across once they've unloaded!
There are glamping accommodations available and alpacas on site too!
Locally there are many stunning walks in the countryside, forests or around reservoirs. We highly recommend Conwy Falls and Forest Park just a shirt drive away. It's absolutely stunning and a lovely couple of hours out for just £2 per person.
The food at The Crown Inn is delicious and very reasonably priced. As are the drinks. Coming in a few pounds cheaper for a round than here in Manchester. Food is cooked fresh and can be taken away to your tent.
I can't recommend this campsite enough for anyone wanting some peace and relaxation or for families who love the outdoors or for walkers.
We love it here and will definitely be returning time and time again.

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch (small, two person)

Liked: The Crown Inn campsite is a wonderful quirky little site that offers more than some of that bigger sites we have stayed in. The facilities are spottless and eco friendly and there is plenty of space to wash and clean up. It’s a small holding and my daughter was obsessed with the sheep, chicken and most certainly the Alpacas. If she could have fitted Lovely Leo in the car she would have! Rich and Caroline where amazing hosts and we will be booking in soon and will bring the whole family this time.

Disliked: Hard to think of anything we disliked

Otter cabin (four person)

Liked: A beautiful quiet location, with the relaxing sound of the river flowing by. 4 very friendly Alpacas to stroke or feed. Friendly family that run the Pub restaurant & Campsite. Good Beer & food. Very old unusual Church on other side of River that you can go in to look around.

Disliked: The doors on the compost toilets made a very loud squeak which could have disturbed other Campers during the night. Also the Otter Cabin door was very stiff & noisy to open & close, so disturbed partner when going off to the toilet during the night.

Otter cabin (four person)

Liked: Cabin was small but cute, booked for my sons 10th birthday. (Could of done with cups, cuterly ect in the cabin like there is in most cabins) there was fridge & kettle)

The kids loved the added alpaca walk/feed and animal encounter that I paid extra for.

Disliked: The only thing I could say is I don’t think the firepit and wood was worth £15.

Kingfisher cabin (seven person)

Liked: We really enjoyed staying here over the bank holiday weekend and the sight had everything we could have wanted. Our young children loved the Alpaca walk, easy access to paddle in the river and the use of the hired firepit. Customer service was friendly and the food at the crown inn was great too.

Disliked: The cabin was ok for the 4 of us but wouldn't have advised 7 people staying in there, from the website photos it did look slightly larger but served us brilliantly.

Local attractions

There's plenty to do hereabouts, whether you're inclined to go off gallivanting through the hills of Snowdonia National Park (from 15 minutes' drive), boating on Bala lake (20 minutes) or heading out to see cool castles like the one at Conwy (45 minutes). The village of Llanfihangel Glyn Myfyr is in a central location in North Wales, so both the north and west coasts of the country are within an hour's drive too. If you've got kids or teens to keep entertained, popular options to keep them busy include Go Below Underground Adventures (20 minutes), a caving outfit based in Betws-y-Coed, the woodland rides and activities at Zip World Fforest (25 minutes) or taking a trip to see the many species of animals and birds at the Welsh Mountain Zoo (50 minutes). For something silent and serene instead, take a soothing stroll around the grounds of Clocaenog Forest (five minutes; free parking available at Bod Petryal car park), keep your eyes and ears peeled for osprey at Llyn Brenig (15 minutes) or appreciate the horticultural offerings on display at Caerau Gardens (25 minutes).
