  • Well-maintained family-run north Wales pub site by the river Alwen
  • In Llanfihangel Glyn Myfyr; edge of Snowdonia 15 minutes' drive
  • Alpaca walks and feeding on site; river fishing permitted
Originally a drovers' inn, The Crown Inn is a handsome Grade II-listed pub sitting in a peaceful position by the river Alwen in the pretty North Wales village of Llanfihangel Glyn Myfyr. Lying just behind the pub and skirted by ancient woodland, the pub's laidback camping area has easy access to forest trails, fishing on the riverbank and drinks in the bar. Access to The Crown Inn and Campsite is via a ford crossing that crosses the river – an exciting and intrepid journey that's sure to hold particular appeal for younger guests. A short wander away, there's a small waterfall that cascades down from the top of the woods into the river below – keep an eye out for fairies around here, as they're known to hang around in the area by the wooden bridge… Facilities here consist of well-maintained compost toilets and a washing-up area on site. There's access to The Crown Inn's bar and restaurant, which serve up good food and drinks throughout the week. Looking for things to do during your down-time? Relax by the riverbank, try a spot of catch-and-return fishing in the Alwen or fix yourself a firepit. You can also book some time at the site's private alpaca paddock to feed The Crown Inn's friendly boys, or sign up to an alpaca walk through the surrounding countryside with a woolly companion by your side.

Alpaca Area - Willow bell tent (two person)

Liked: Couldn’t recommend enough - lovely accommodating staff very kind and welcoming. The pub served nice pizzas on a Saturday too and provided logs and marshmallows for campfires if needed. The alpacas are so cute and we’ll looked after and our tent in the alpaca pitch was right on the river. Great location very scenic and is only 5 min away and Bala lake is 20 min away. Thank you we had a lovely stay!!

Alpaca Area - Ash bell tent (four person)

Liked: We stayed in Alpaca pitch, we absolutely loved meeting the friendly alpacas and living in tent, right by the river and wood surrounded by nature, there was lots of song birds , and red kites to see from campsite, the river has kingfishers and otters in too. The facilities were clean, and available all the time. The campsite is run by a professional, friendly family who also run the Crown Inn which has awesome food and drinks. They will also provide extras such as a hot water bottle or extra blanket which they did not charge for. Near the major roads in north wales a great base camp to explore north Wales, Snowdonia, Zipworlds and everywhere else.

Alpaca Area - Willow bell tent (two person)

Liked: We have just had a night at The Crown Inn and absolutely loved it - so much so that we have booked to return in summer with our little girls. As soon as we walked into the pub, we were made to feel so welcome by Caroline and Richard. They were so helpful and honestly couldn’t do enough for us from the minute we arrive until the minute we left. We had lunch in the pub, which was incredible, and the little log burner made it so cosy. Prices were really good and the Guinness is up there with the best! We went out for the day, resulting in getting soaked in the rain. When we returned, freezing and dripping wet, Caroline and Richard couldn’t do enough for us - blankets, hot water bottles, clothes in the tumble dryer and more wood on the fire! We stayed for a few drinks and, because of how much we loved the little pub, my boyfriend thought it was the perfect place to propose! I’m delighted as it is somewhere that will always be very special to us! We stayed in the Alpaca enclosure in the 2 bed bell tent. The enclosure was so lovely with seating and a fire pit. It is right next to the river making it the perfect location. The free roaming alpacas made it for us! They were adorable and so friendly! There are alpaca walks available so we will definitely be booking onto this for next time. The tent was really clean and cosy with really comfy beds and fantastic views, with bedding all provided. There were toilets inside of the pub which were available during pub opening times, and a toilet in the camping area with a sink. They were all kept really clean and the facilities were well looked after. Overall, we have absolutely loved our visit and we can’t wait to return. Thank you so much Caroline and Richard

Local attractions

There's plenty to do hereabouts, whether you're inclined to go off gallivanting through the hills of Snowdonia National Park (from 15 minutes' drive), boating on Bala lake (20 minutes) or heading out to see cool castles like the one at Conwy (45 minutes). The village of Llanfihangel Glyn Myfyr is in a central location in North Wales, so both the north and west coasts of the country are within an hour's drive too. If you've got kids or teens to keep entertained, popular options to keep them busy include Go Below Underground Adventures (20 minutes), a caving outfit based in Betws-y-Coed, the woodland rides and activities at Zip World Fforest (25 minutes) or taking a trip to see the many species of animals and birds at the Welsh Mountain Zoo (50 minutes). For something silent and serene instead, take a soothing stroll around the grounds of Clocaenog Forest (five minutes; free parking available at Bod Petryal car park), keep your eyes and ears peeled for osprey at Llyn Brenig (15 minutes) or appreciate the horticultural offerings on display at Caerau Gardens (25 minutes).
